Next Mass Effect game should have a default female lead for the cover.

Time for a paradigm shift. Instead of having the typical buff male protagonist I think we should see a female lead as the default cover for the next Mass Effect. Sure Fem Shep had a reversible cover, and was the option for gamers, but seriously why can't we have more female leads on the cover of our games as a default. Like Tomb Raider with Lara Croft as the cover. Hell I think it's time for girls to get the spotlight in games. Though more painted in a better light, not perversed.

I don't really think having a female character on the cover would discourage sales. Tomb Raider sold a lot, and she became an icon and representative for women to look up to. If games are trying to appeal to a broader audience I think they should change the overall cover. Ubisoft seems to do justice by having different people as protagonists ie) Assasin's Creed 4 Connor, Assassin's Creed Vita, etc.

They could have 2 different covers, and take your pick.

I'd support this. Whenever I walk into a shop that sells games I see so many games where the cover is of a male soldier type character doing a cool pose with a gun, or some variation of that. I guess some companies think that games with female main characters on the front cover "won't sell" but it worked for Final Fantasy XIII and Tomb Raider, to name a few. I think it could catch on if more companies started supporting the idea.

I think Bioware should just keep using a reversible cover.

While I liked the reversible cover - and, naturally, changed it to the FemShep side while still on my way out of the store - I do think that video gaming community does occasionally need to have a little feminism shoved down its throat.

I say make the next lead female in all marketing material (just like Shepard was male in all marketing except that one trailer where they replaced him with FemShep but kept MaleShep's LI's... Sigh) and send a message.

I'm a guy, and I'm still sick of the childish chauvinism in the industry and player communities, g'damn it.

I don't think it really matters how the cover looks like. If you'd force a female protagonist on the cover you achieved absolutely nothing. Change society, change the way of thinking then everything else will come naturally. That kind of male chauvinism exists especially within the gamesindustry because most hardcore gamers are male (I'm not talking about the casual/Sims/mobile-crowd). Thanks to the mechanics of ME we have the luxury of having a reversible cover and 2 versions of trailers. The rest is up to BioWare and how they want to make the game, even though the fans should be able to decide or vote which gender is on the "default cover".

I am indifferent to the whole cover ordeal.

Though, I believe that the game should be released with 2 separate covers: one with the male protagonist and another with the female.

Or better yet, the protagonist should not be featured on the cover at all.

I cannot begin to understand how putting the protagonist of a game where the players craft that character is a good idea.

Some marketing departments are just terribly sloppy.

18% finished Mass Effect 3 as Female Shepard, that's kinda disappointing, only 18%!

Cover doesn't matter, but people are kidding themselves if they think a female lead will be more popular than a male lead.

For all the well-deserved praise Jennifer Hale received for this trilogy, she was vastly outnumbered by male-shep users.

And anyone who argues that marketing campaigns should be directed strictly at straight white men because "it's more popular" is a sexist ****, so I don't feel like appeasing those people.

Having women on the cover is sexist.

On second thought, I will just go with this:

I was thinking about this too, actually. Well, in a way; I was wondering if and how, after FemShep, the new female lead will feature in marketing. The best way to go, in my opinion, is the reversible cover. Sadly, the action genre is all too male-centric to have much of a broad appeal, especially in what is basically an all-new, unknown franchise. FemShep had three games to garner the love that would warrant her place in marketing at all (which kind of makes me sad) - so the "female lead only" approach would generate a lot of "who does this girl think she is?" reactions.

Also, BioWare does love giving people options (nope, not going to that Place That Shall Not Be Mentioned), so limiting the cover to just one of the possibilities would be a bit unfair to the New Guy. We need to be nice to guys and girls alike, is what I am saying:)

I personally never understand why this is a such a big deal to people...for a game where you can play male or female...and you can completely customize the character how you want.

It should just be a blank background with the title on the front.

1. Reversible cover.

2. Connor isn't the protagonist in AC4.

Two different covers for the game. Like ME3. You can buy one with Femshep on the cover, or you can buy one with Sheploo.

Everybody wins.

Less than one in five people played FemShep. There is no reason to have the next cover be of a female protagonist.

There's your solution.

One in five players going for the female protagonist is a pretty respectable number, but obviously not nearly enough to push the FemProg front-and-center as the face of all marketing.

This would work well.

Why does it even matter though OP? It's a cover... to a game...

Leave the protagonist off the cover or feature both default characters.

You'd be surprised at how many people judge a game by its cover.
