Next Mass Effect game should have a default female lead for the cover.

Well, the marketing's pretty bad either way.The Mad Hanar wrote...

I mean, ME3's cover, whether with a male or female, is bland and generic as hell, and I have a hard time believing that it could cause anyone who looked at it to become interested in the game.

Which leads to the inevitable moebius paradox.
It's pretty safe to assume that if we only market games toward straight white males, straight white males will make up the majority of the people playing those games. By your logic, marketing should instead target an East Asian male demographic because there are more of those to sell to. So why aren't we doing that?

You know they would just end up putting Liara on the cover then, haha.

I don't really like that solution, because it's basically equal to putting your hands over your ears and pretending you can't hear the bad things. Of course, putting a female lead on the cover is only treating the symptoms, and not the cause.
It's unfortunately just a lose-lose situation, but I'm always in favor of sending a message. Same reason I used to think gay pride parades were bogus but eventually came to appreciate what they mean.

No it's not, It's basically saying it shouldn't matter who's on the cover of a game
Honestly any game that allows you to choose a gender shouldn't put that person on the cover

No, the next Bioware game should have a bald guy holding a shotgun behind his shoulders.levyjl1988 wrote...
Time for a paradigm shift. Instead of having the typical buff male protagonist I think we should see a female lead as the default cover for the next Mass Effect. Sure Fem Shep had a reversible cover, and was the option for gamers, but seriously why can't we have more female leads on the cover of our games as a default. Like Tomb Raider with Lara Croft as the cover. Hell I think it's time for girls to get the spotlight in games. Though more painted in a better light, not perversed.
I don't really think having a female character on the cover would discourage sales. Tomb Raider sold a lot, and she became an icon and representative for women to look up to. If games are trying to appeal to a broader audience I think they should change the overall cover. Ubisoft seems to do justice by having different people as protagonists ie) Assasin's Creed 4 Connor, Assassin's Creed Vita, etc.

Honestly, if a person is only buying a game based on the sex or ethnicity of the main character, then they need to re-evaluate what is important about a video game. Besides, you're kind of taking my argument out of context. I was saying they put the guy on the cover because the players overwhelmingly chose to play as a guy. They didn't put a guy on the cover in the hopes that people would choose to play as a guy. If you think females are undersold on covers or games I'd like you to take a look at Heavy Rain (main female protagonist), XCOM: EU (woman on the cover), Resident Evil 6 (two main female protagonists), Tomb Raider (cover and pro), Mirror's Edge (cover and pro), Remember Me (cover and pro), The Last of Us (cover and pro), all of which have come out in recent years and all of which were successful. So if you think that companies or players are scared to play a game with promienet female characters, then I think you haven't been paying close enough attention to the games. If you did, you really would be wondering why there aren't Black or Mexican or British or Spainish main characters.

TES/FO cases don't have PCs on their case. If the game let's you choose your gender it should not show the PC< this makes everyone happy. If the game has a set PC then knock yourselfs out. Case to the point, Bioware never put their PCs on the cover of their games until JE(Which had both genders) ME was the first game to have one gender which was Sheploo.Ever since that many people have complained about Biowares vases from it being boring, generic, only showing the male PC ect.The Mad Hanar wrote...
There has to be a reason why the majority of devs choose to put their PCs on the cover.
That is why what TES/FO and the older Bioware covers did are simply better, unless this new game will have a set gender PC.

Well majority of games don't let you choose gender for their PCs, the one that do shouldn't put the PC on the cover imho

It's not sexist; it's smart business. You don't pour millions of dollars into a product to try and sway a disinterested crowd to buy. You aim the product at those historically interested. You tell that crowd that you're the best and keep them looking at your product.HellbirdIV wrote...

Cover doesn't matter, but people are kidding themselves if they think a female lead will be more popular than a male lead.
And anyone who argues that marketing campaigns should be directed strictly at straight white men because "it's more popular" is a sexist ****, so I don't feel like appeasing those people.
Although, I don't know if a female lead would cause a drop in sales. Games exist out there with female leads that have done perfectly fine. But for me, I wouldn't want to risk it. I know I'm pretty safe with a generic male soldier.
(Personally, I would prefer more creative artwork over another protagonist just looking at me or off into the distance.)

The option of having no one on is certainly possible. Skyrim(and previous elder scrolls) didn't bother plastering dovahkiin on the cover, and instead chose something tasteful and memorable. So far, they've sold 10 Million Units. Older Classic Games like Legend of Zelda also stick to something symbolic instead. The N7 Symbol is certainly one way to go.
