Next Mass Effect game should have a default female lead for the cover.

I'll be honest, you guys kind of make me want to puke.

It has nothing to do with feminism or sexism. It's you choice of gender in a video game that is no different than choosing to be a warrior or mage in Dragon age. I didn't get upset when dragon age had a warrior trailor when I played a mage...

but you know that small minority of egocentrics however get kind of mad about trailors.

What if they have a bulky armored character that blurred the line between genders?

If you get the right proportions, some will see it as male and others as female.

It's a win-win situation. What do you guys think?

Though I personally agree with the OP and will make no secret of this.

I'd love to have a female protagonist on the cover.

Baring that, I would rather not have the protagonist on the cover and and instead have the cover somehow sum up the entire game.

I liked the reversible cover for bioshock for example. That was quite different.

Erm ME has reversable covers.

And what does that have to with what I said? I wasn't talking about reversible covers. I was talking about DIFFERENT and INTERESTING covers that stand out.

Even if we are talking about reversible covers I prefer Bioshock Infinites method over ME3 (As much appreciated as fem shep was). Bioshock infinite was entirely different to the main cover and was done in a style that was striking and different to anything you would normally see.

"Shooter protagonist holding a gun, staring slightly off to the side" is "striking and different"?

They already have the reversible cover. They made even greater stretches to support their female gamer supporters in ME3 by advertising femshep.

How about this? ME4 features a female protagonist on the outside cover, the following one feature a male protagonist, and so on. They alternate! They're also reversible covers. Everyone wins!

I don't remember having a male protagonist was that big of a deal. I mean tons of games trailer features male protagonist only before, and pretty much everybody was fine with it. Now, BioWare went out of the way once to make 2 version of the trailer and suddenly we all become feminist? Come on guys.
What's next? They should do trailer for every classes? Because appearantly, my adept Shep never hold a riffle in his life, how dare them only show Shep holding riffle ONLY, in that trailer. lol
To be honest, I'd rather they put NPC on the cover, cover the protagonist in some kind of robe or black smoke and leave players to decide his / her look. Problems solved.

Not to be of one mind about this but.....

Male character's on front cover's sell more games.

And this is a developer who is now with EA, who have alot of experience in marketing.

I agree, this is a shame. Femshep, for example, is someone who convinces as being an alliance soldier. Not a glammed up frustrated sex object in a hula outfit with leggings. (Ms 'Where have my hair buns gone' William's! I'm looking at you).

And maybe there's the problem to which Mass Effect 3 offered a glimpse at the solution. Default femshep is treated the same way as default Shep-man. There are no glaring differences between one or the other. They really are both equal in terms of what they do and say to a large degree, barring romance/gender specific options and dialogue. No testosterone or low camera ass shots. They are both just a person doing a job.

There is no doubt however. Shep-man launched the IP and femshep followed as being his equal. This ties back in to what I said at the start. Male character's on front covers of games sell more.

And from alot of game critique commentary I don't approve because games ought to be aimed at all genders equally. Buuuut.

Only one front cover, and two gender's to cater to. And a character whose existence supplant's the other. Femshep and Shep-man after all, cannot exist in the same universe.

Soooooo, to break the mold of a developer who introduced and ultimately led a charge for gay acceptance and relationships in their games, back when they were really trying to break molds, I say make the default character of ME4 female. Because......

and here comes the expectation's based on past performances. Which according to some is....... well, wrong.

I expect BW will release another cover of the front game artwork with a reversible slip of both default character models, accompanied by trailer's showing both character's going through the same motion's ala Femshep and Shep-man picking up a broken childs toy and leaping at a Brute.

But only if they remember to action this stance of equality by making the effort to develop it.

BW has been a good force for changing peoples views about certain things in games thanks to it's narrative style approach. The question is. Are these stances flash pan occurances, or does BW really believe in them that it actively incorporates them into any and all games they produce?

How about no iconic character this time around (male or female) how about not putting anybody on the cover and instead just let the gamers created their own character that they can play with in game.
