Well, you can't beat this: if you save Feynriel in Act 2, Marethari gives you a book with "a rare magic". In game terms, it's a piece of junk. We could all add our "it just got less real" moments to this thread, mostly from DA2 I guess...

Haha! I was rubbing my hairy palms together when I heard the "rare magic" thing. I thought Hawke would get new spells or even new school of magic with it. Instead he go 6 silvers for it.

The lands meet was definitely a favorite, and wondering about getting enough votes
And Common dwarf was the first time that when I played Origins I felt an immediate protectiveness for my family, I mean I wanted to make that drunken woman proud.
Finding out just how selfish and conniving the keeper was in nature of the Beast was surprising.
I remember Hespith verse so well and I love getting to that part, although I was a bit confused exactly what Branka did, still am a bit when it comes to the details
saccrifice was poetic, it meant a lot, had a lot of impact.

I really can't say much about DAII mainly because I looked it up and spoiled myself. It ruined it for me, and I am half way thinking of shutting down Internet from when I start DAI until I finish because I can't not look.

I abandon the BSN for weeks before a game comes out until I've finished my first run. I hate spoilers! :D

The only "oh sht!" moment I remember having is rather meta: when I was in the Fade during DA2, Fenris betrays me for the Pride demon, and proceeded to one-shot murder my ass. It was pretty awesome, actually, considering I was playing on Casual and was thus - in my own mind - impervious to death.
And it was then that I knew. "One day", I said, "I shall bed that elf."

There were several moments in both games where I was either shocked, or in awe of how "deep" some of these moments could get.

Da: O
- Leaving your parents if you play the Cousland story.
- In the Fade where you have the choice to either save the possessed man, or let him be happy and ignorant because he is possessed by a demon. (I seriously had a hard time with this).
- Giving Morrigan the mirror - I loved her character development and seeing her walls begin to slowly fall bit by bit, that and when she refuses to sleep with you because she knows she's in love with you.
- When you had the choice to kill Loghain or not. The first time I did, but lost Alistair because he was being a little whiny baby, so I had to go back to a save and kill Loghain because I didn't want to lose him. lol
- Morrigan's story in general actually. I find it to be one of the more tragic Bioware romances. The fact that she is on this mission of betrayal to only fall in love with the Warden, and have to do it anyways for (I hope) the better of everyone. Wouldn't it be ironic that the person that everyone thought was only out for themselves ended up being the savior of all of Thedas.

DA:2
- Right off the bat when one of your siblings die.
-Apparently Flemeth has the ability to become "hotter" every time she dies. lol
- Okay, Frankenmom.... this is the first RPG that has made me uncomfortable and disgusted - BUT that's what I loved about this scene. It was very emotional, and if it affected me that much- good job Bioware!
- Anders blew up the darn Chantry... like...really?! I know people love him, but I despise his character. lol
- When Hawke fights the Quanri for Isabela - epic and cute at the same time.

DAO
- coustland loosing his family and avenging it in the end (though I would have wanted more thing to be hadled there, when you get to kill Howe and to have the burial of his parents and brothers family).
- dalish elf, tamlens fate.
-city elf, saying to Vaughan "all I want is your head".
- dwarf noble, "tell my father I went to a warrior´s death".
- Leliana´s song.
- Morrigan, what XGrlGamerX said.
- the gauntlet, meeting with ghosts from the past of the pc.
- Duncan´s and Cailan´s death.
- Sacrificing Isolde in blood ritual in order to save her child and then selling that child to demon for blood magic.

DA2
-when Aveline is talking to Arishok in the issue of elf´s getting away with murder. I was so sure Arishok was going to do quick swing and cut Aveline´s head clean off. I was expecting that after loosing all the Hawke´s family.

- City Elf Origin....having to do murder and mayhem in my wedding dress?

- Dalish Elf Origin....I played my first Dalish as a total human hater....being told I was going to go willingly or be drug off, tied up if necessary (Duncan is SCARY!).....I cried at the goodby to the clan, walking up the hill, the sad music, the look back....and then Tamlen at camp! And having to kill him?

- Human nobel....the good by with the parents

- Dwarf nobel....betrayal by my brother (whom I seemed closest to?). That was my first quest when I was able....super hard at low level

-Duncan looking up at the burning tower and no backup comming....

- Seeing the broodmother for the first time

LOL.....

Yeah...that pretty much happened to me to, but I wasn't playing on casual.

My rouge turned to look at him and *bam* dead.

I remember reading all over that Flemeth was a hard fight. I did not know...

I thought she would have some crazy spells, area spells, etc.

I went up to her solo thinking about how cool it would be to beat her 1-on-1.

Then she turned into a dragon... had to turn that chit on casual.

Lulz. Same for me!

Doing the mage tower origin and getting startled by that first spider when clearing out the pests in storage for Senior Enchanter Leorah. The first of many such moments.

Here's a rare "nasty surprise" moment in DAO:

During my escape from Fort Drakon, I failed a stealing attempt when trying to get the password for the patrol. Nothing happened and nobody reacted, but there is a mechanic that lets you encounter a rather sizeable group of pissed-off guards while you're traveling through Denerim if you'd ever been caught stealing. These people managed to ambush me while I was on the way back from Fort Drakon, all on my own...

Let's say this fight was not a cakewalk, not even on Casual. Never thought the Walking Bomb spells would one day save my life in this spectacular manner.

Handing Fenris over to Danarius (just to see what would happen). I reloaded immediately afterward, but felt dirty nonetheless.

Had a similar moment of gut-wrenching guilt when I turned down Zevran's token of affection in DAO (that David Gaider must have a black belt in passive aggression)!  :?

DA:O my first play through was a Dalish elf...seeing Tamlen in the gauntlet then having to kill him in camp.

DA:2: First play through was a mage and I didn't take Carver to the Deep Roads because I was trying to make Hawke an epic big sister...jerk joined the Templars.

Oooh, good thread! I'm sure most of these have come up, but here's my list:

-Getting exiled from Orzammar (Dwarf Noble)
-"Sound... the retreat." Admittedly, I was concerned about Loghain when he did that creepy "glorious day for us all" line but I never imagined he would actually quit the field like that. Blew me away. Watching Duncan realise what happened was heartbreaking. :(
-Hespith and the broodmother. /shudder
-Tamlen's fate (Dalish Elf)
-Neleros' fate (female City Elf) as well as Shianni's.
-Mama and Papa Cousland's deaths, seeing Ser Gilmore and Mother Mallol in Fort Drakon and discovering that Fergus is alive at the end (Human Noble)
-Killing Arl Howe
-Winning the Landsmeet
-Discovering that the GW who kills the archdemon will die
-Alistair taking the final blow before my Warden could stop him. :(

Edit: Oops, forgot DA2.
-Leandra's fate (obviously)
-The Arishok finally snapping (very good voice acting. Made me nervous, that's for sure!)
-Poisoning the wyvern food paying off in MotA. I kinda just did it for fun, not knowing if I'd get caught or if it even mattered.
-Fighting Corypheus in Legacy/finding out the Malcolm was a blood mage.
-Isabela fleeing with the Tome of Koslun./Isabela coming back.

Human Noble Origin: Gilmore, defending the gate alone.
Dalish Elf Origin: saying goodbye to the clan.
Mage Origin: "True tests never end."
The desperate farmer ambush outside Lothering.
Lyrium-addled templars outside Denerim Chantry (misquoting elderly priestess makes me grin though)
The first time I saw the little skull-and-crossbones icon over Lothering.
Seeing the grouchy Redcliffe mayor's bones on the ground.
The Lady of the Forest.
Leske with Jarvia (after doing dwarf commoner)
Ruck.
Very first playthrough, Hespith named Broodmother right as I walked into the room...
Loghain's Landsmeet speech. (killed him anyway, of course.)
Seeing Archdemon on top of Fort Drakon.
FERGUSSS (Human Noble)

Saarebas.
Spiders, in the Deep Roads. SPIDERS EVERYWHERE.
"I will FIND that sonuva****--sorry mother--and I will KILL him."
The Rock Wraith.
Arishok exploding after the poison alley-thing.
Ser Alrik.
Ser Emeric dead.
Zombie Leandra.
Chill Grand Cleric after Petrice is shot in the head.
When Arishok declares war. (then grudgingly killing the Arishok)
The High Dragon.
MARETHARIIIII
...and Merril finally breaks the mirror.
First named revenant. NOW IT HAS NAME ARMOR TOO.
"Summoned a Horror? Of course I did. Why wouldn't I do that?"
Chantry go BOOM!
Orsino.
Meredith's pretty red sword.

You know what really really sucked? Everyone keeps mentioning Tamlen in the ambush, but if you go straight to camp instead of travelling to another destination to start the encounter then the game glitches and you never get that part. You skip it by going straight to camp instead of travelling, and you miss the night attack for good. You know what playthrough I found this out on? My first ever Dalish character. I made my character looking forward to finally seeing the scene I've heard so much about, and then... Nothing. I never get the ambush, and only find out later why.

Suffice to say, it ruined that origin for me. I've never felt the urge to do another Dalish character. It doesn't help that I did my first and last Origins 2-handed weapon run with that character (Dalish with a greatsword, hah!), only to find that 2-handed weapon style sucks completely and utterly in Origins and hated every second of it.  Neither of these were exactly the Dalish origin's fault, but it still soured it for me enough to not want to ever do that origin again. My memories of that playthrough are not fond.
