Not seen this posted yet. BioWare artist Matt Rhodes has shown off some concept art from throughout the trilogy, including this piece from "very very early" in ME3 development.

Shepard could have resorted to using the Reapers for his own ends and would have come up against the new human spectre (the VS). Would have been like the Saren and Shepard showdown in the first Mass Effect.

Lots more in the article - early Tali face designs, less sexbot EDI ideas, some really cool Human Reaper concepts. Shame they ditched a lot of this stuff really.

The Shepard/VS spin could have been fun. Probably heartbreaking, too.

Interesting. It's amazing how far they've come since then. I like the idea of a Tali face concept back before her face became such a big deal.

Did anyone catch the interpretation of Synthesis? He proposed that everyone could mind-link with the relays themselves and instantly jump to any point in space. Like the Vanguard charge taken up to 11. That's crazy! People think Synthesis is nuts as it is, but wow! I wish they'd gone with that idea.

i read the article. I would have mmmmmmmmmmmmmuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccch preferred this to ME3. Why do they have to scrap awesome, mature themes in favour of silly juvenile plots?

When I first saw that image I, too, thought it was Kai; however, the cereal killer predates ME3 by quite a bit (Retribution and Deception)

I like this design for the quarians, it would have been alien but still cute enough for LI, at least IMO. But no, had to be purple space elves.

Ashley or Kaidan could never have taken down Shep. The Cerberus trooper designs all look like Volus or comically underarmoured.

Apart from that they all look decent, though I'm glad a lot of these designs weren't used as the final ones all seem better, bar maybe 1 or 2 of the Shadow Broker ones.

But I do love these Reaper Geth(?)

The one on the right looks like a precursor to a krogan Reaper. Maybe it lead to the Brute.  The one on the left looks like, maybe, it could have been inspired by salarians?

If I was presented this as tali's face or something similar, especially since this was entirely (at least mostly it seems) from scratch than this would have been more acceptable than the Photoshoped stock image they used.

Kai Leng should have looked a lot more cybernetic in Mass Effect 3. I think some players would have complained less about not being able to defeat him during the Coup or on Thessia, if you were going against someone who is obviously a heavily augmented cyborg.

Of course you're told in the game that he's been upgraded, but not all players pay attention to dialogue.

*snip*

I need something in the ballpark of this to work with.

I think this was the best concept for Tali's face prior to the release of ME3:

Of course that one was a fan concept.

I like it, but the above shot could be accused of being too close to asari, maybe?

Stilll a thousand percent better than the one in the game...

Those versions of Tali are cool. I think they need to stick with their creatives/artists more often, and not try to necessarily please mainstream concerns (Oh noes.. she doesn't look human enough). Not that I think they're mainstream in some conscious way. Just that I suspect the leads have stopped becoming the oddball/geeks that they are. They spend too much time with corporate and Hollywood groups, focus groups, and go to parties with "cool people". Hang around crap like that and it rubs off on your mentality. Now their ideas amount to "lets just photoshop a getty image".

Anyways, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Matt Rhodes needs to be making more hands-on creative decisions at BioWare, instead of just concept designs. I'd love to see his "finalized" in-game visions for Kai Leng, EDI, and Tali.

Seeing the concept art for Tali's face make me glad that they didn't use it. Surely to god, they can come up with a better face idea rather then that or Miss England photo-shopped.

The concept was before Mass Effect 1 and before you had hordes of fans clamoring her to be a LI. The Tali concept is more alien because it was designed without a romance with Shepard in mind.

I thought the final concept for Tali and the Quarians was perfect, just what I imagined from the suttle hints bwhind her mask and the background info(about Quarians resembling humans more than any other Alien races) in ME2. However, the way they revealed it after Rannoch was dreadful.

Uhhh, you guys are missing the point. No matter how pretty the concept art is, it's still just concept art. It's not necessarily something that could be implemented. I did like how they incorporated the idea of the "lotus" motif into the ending area. Highly atmospheric.

To be honest, I find the fanart waaaaaaaaaay creepier than Bioware's official look.

Sure, but in the case of Tali, they didn't even try.

It reminds me of something I myself did back in highschool art class. I slacked off for a whole semester for a sculpture project, and at the last minute, I jokingly made a dracula head. I fully admit being a fool who didn't try.. I know I could do better. Bioware acts like they're proud of their work on Tali though (some do at least).

Romance or not, that face doesn't belong in ME universe.
