Romance troubles

Here is some troubleshooting:
1. When did you go to Therum? Was it the first story planet?
2. Did you routinely try to talk to the crew after side missions?
3. Did you have the conversation with Liara about Asari reproduction? If so, when did that occur?
4. Was Ash calling you "Skipper" or using the "Sir" goodbye? If the latter, when did the switch occur?
One of the issues that is easy to run into is that if you progress too far through Liara's dialogue you will automatically end up in her romance dialogue, which is the conversation about Asari reproduction. This instantly locks out Ash. If you don't talk to the crew at all after side missions typically this cannot occur, but since side missions will advance dialogue after you do a couple of them, it is possible to essentially get too far ahead. Liara basically has one less conversation than Ash, so if you get her early it is easy to go too far.
I suspect this is the reason people used to claim that when Ash asks about you talking to Liara you were "supposed" to pick the renegade line. In reality, I commonly pick the paragon response and do not have any issues.
What I typically would recommend if you aren't sure about it is to at least quick save before every conversation with Liara. If she goes into the Asari reproduction talk and you don't want to romance her, then reload and don't talk to her.

2. I always speak to all squad members straight after a story mission only.
3. I had the Asari reproduction conversation after chatting to her in her medical quarters for the first time (I think).
4. Ash stopped calling me skipper just now in the middle of being on Noveria (at the point where Lorik Qui'in just gave me the pass to enter Synthetic Insights which is my earliest save point.) After Feros Ashley was definetly still calling me skipper but now she isn't.
I should also point out now that after Noveria, Ashley is now maintaining rifles and not wanting to talk to me anymore about stuff.

2 and 3 - Liara's conversation about Asari Reproduction is actually her 3rd or 4th conversation. It should not be possible to get it the first time you talk to her, which should be like this. She does mention something about rumors of Asari promiscuity, but the reproduction conversation is about "joining." It is the next conversation after she will ask about your relationship with Ashley along the lines of "I thought there was a relationship with Chief Williams" and you have to pick "Ash is special," then she says something like "but I thought there was a connection between us" and you can agree to keep leading her on. After this conversation, if you are far enough on Ash's romance path and do not talk to Liara again, you should get the confrontation scene after the next story planet.CoOkIeSrNiCe wrote...
1. Therum was the first story planet I visited.

4 - Ash says basically the same things on away missions regardless, it is just the way she responds on Normandy that matters. Also you can't ruin the relationship with her on away missions, only on Normandy.
So you did Therum, Feros, Noveria then Virmire I guess, and talked to them after each?
I think it is possible to do Liara's first and second conversation right after you pick her up, but Ashley pretty much requires strict mission progression. And she sort of has an extra conversation since her first after becoming Spectre is about "the aliens" on the ship, and is possible to get before picking up Liara, or any story planet if you do side missions. However, in my most recent run, I get that one with Ash after Therum, and it is in the same vid as above.
If I were you I would go to a post Feros save and then go talk to Ashley and see how she treats you. If she says goodbye with Skipper, go up and Quick Save before Liara, then go talk to her. If you get the Asari Reproduction conversation, reload the save and don't talk to her until after the next story planet. Obviously if Ash says she is busy and doesn't want to talk, you need to go back further.

To make life easier I'm gonna say hell with this and wait till I fancy doing a playthrough in the future. Besides I was only doing a 100% trilogy playthrough so that it could be imported onto ME4 which doesn't come out till late 2014. Thanks for the help anyway!

The reason I investigated this was that one playthrough pretty much exactly the same thing happened to me. I expected the confrontation scene, it didn't happen, and then Ash was cold. But I went back to figure out what had gone wrong since everything on the internet just talked about telling Ash she is out of line, or other things that I didn't do in game.
