So I'd like to play Mass Effect 3 for PC and see these are the recommended specs:

  • OS – Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1, Win 7
  • CPU – 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (equivalent AMD CPU)
  • RAM – 2GB for XP / 4GB RAM for Vista/Win 7
  • Disc Drive – 1x speed
  • Hard Drive – 15 GB of free space
  • Video – AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB or greater, NVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512 MB or greater
  • Sound – DirectX 9.0c compatible
My PC is Win 7, 3.30 Ghz, 4GB Ram but no graphics card (just an intel one on the motherboard), so I would like to buy one for around £40 or less which will play Mass Effect 3 well. I looked into the Geforce 9800 but that seems really old now.

Thanks for your time :)

First, 3.3GHz means nothing if we don't know what CPU it is. For all we know it could be a Pentium 4, which would be hardpressed to run the game decently.

Secondly, even if play at 1280x720p resolution, 40 pound will see you to nothing.

If you're looking to play at 1920x1080p with playable frames per second (30+ fps, and that is the lowest spectrum were you can still actually play the game somewhat) at low (-medium because ME3 isn't that hungry) settings, you would need to look at the HD 7770 or GTX 650 (around 80 pound).

Though we'd still need to know if your CPU is actually up to it. If it's a single core CPU, then no.

Just a note, we also need information on the power supply unit (PSU) as im suspecting its a OEM computer, these companies cut corners where they can on budget machines which means if it shipped without a external graphics card the PSU is probably not the best.

Not gonna work.

If you want a dedicated GPU, you'll have to get an around 450W PSU.

CPU itself is okay. So you'd look out for a GTX 650/HD 7770 and a better PSU and you're good to go. That should see you through for 1080p @ medium-high settings with fluent fps.

Thanks for the help Neofelis, I will keep a look out for those graphics cards, although they seem slightly more expensive then I'm willing to pay right now. PSUs seem cheap at least, although I'm not sure how easy they are to change.

If you go for a new PSU, make sure it is 80+ marked and it fits in your case, i know factory built machines sometimes use non standard procedures in shape and form of cases.

80+ is a certification program for power supply units meaning it will maintain a high efficiency no mather the load on the psu, basically it means it will maintain at least 80% effiency under any kind of load. If you stick to known brands like Antec, Corsair, FSP with more with this certification its a good PSU.
