And because I didn't have quite the same connection to her, I would add Jack too.

Miranda- Smug, kinda ugly, I hate her with passion.
Kaidan- In ME3 when he makes passes at male Shep all the time when in ME1 he oggled dancers, its just poor writing only there to be there for gay LI. And he is so unlikeable.
James- Pointless, annoying. I hate fake mexican accent. Felt no conenction whatsoever
Morinth- Pointless and serves no purpose except to have a Renegade path
Thane- I like him, but I wouldn't feel any pain if I had to cut him.

...okay, so add Thane, Samara, Jack, and Jacob to that list.
My ideal team is (ME1) Ashley/(ME3) Kaidan, Garrus, Grunt, James, Javik, Kasumi, (ME2) Legion, Miranda (with DLC armor), Mordin, and Tali.
...I never realized just how little my playstyle makes use of biotics.

James: DUDE BRO GUY PERSON LOCO ESTEBAN HUEVOS RANCHEROS I'M SPANISH HUAAAA! The only good thing about this guy is the carnage ability.
EDI: Again, good character. Not a useful squadmate, IMO.
Ashley: Oh wait... I already did that. LOOOOOL
Jacob: Useless squadmate with annoying dialog.
Samara: I don't hate her. I was just never really fond of her.
Jack: It was her or Thane for me... yeah, I like Thane more.
Gosh, so much hate for Grunt here. He's one of my favorites.
The only reason I didn't have Miranda on this list is because you can't ignore DAT ASS

Wilson: bizarre motivations.
Morinth: why would anyone want her on the team?
Aria: fighting a gang war while Reapers destroy the galaxy... right.
Nyreen: same as above, plus another bizarre case of cutscene incompetence.

Jacob - eh, never use him either, unless I have to
Ashley - didn't need her in 1 and she's all but invisible in 3
Kasumi and Zaeed - like them both but I played ME2 several times without their dlc installed so they are definitely not required
James - seems to have been added for newbies who didn't play 1 or 2 first, though he can be quite funny
EDI - even though I like her, usually

Jacob/Zaeed: Zaeed becomes the mainstay and essentially absorbs parts of Jacob's backstory into his character; former Alliance turned mercenary, who was hired to assist Miranda. We discover TIM had ulterior reasons for hiring him regarding Miranda, who is intended to keep a vigilant eye on.
Miranda/Jack: Likewise to the above, Jack's experiment background is absorbed into Miranda, although she has no recollection of being a "test tube baby" because of her blind Cerberus loyalty. Orianna is Cerberus attempting to "perfect" the experiment and Miranda's loyalty missions entail uncovering this mystery while unveiling the shady motives of Cerberus, which I felt her lacking in ME2. In addition, Zaeed plays a role in this, despite his reluctance.
Okeer replaces Grunt: I always felt this was a wasted potential. Okeer would serve a plot driver alongside Mordin, but by ME3 (or even in the midst of ME2 should the Genophage crysis be solved earlier in the series) he would betray you and therefore not be a concern for squadmate variables. Grunt would take over in ME3.
Kasumi is DLC and irrelevant to the core cast. I like her, however I never anticipated much outside ME2. Probably better off cut. Her role was master thief never made much sense. In fact, Thane functionally serves her purpose.
Samara: Again, she is an intriguing character, but her role is largely irrelevant. We already have an Asari in Liara and one could argue her story mirrors Thane's in regards to a parent/child issues. Which brings me to...
Thane: While he cannot completely absorb Kasumi and Samara's stories. We get to do a little patch work. He no longer has a wife, but a former lover, with whom he had a following out, but maintains something of a correspondence - it's "complicated" to quote a cliche. She is essentially Kasumi, but Drell and replaces Keiji Okuda. The greybox is only a potential threat to galactic peace, potentially Reaper related. In fact, we could go right into foreshadowing the Crucible here. Donovan Hawk may be planning to ransom it to the highest bidder on Omega, while Thane intends to steal it as revenge for his former partner.
And just like that. Now only six potential squadmates remain as carryover to ME3. We are then left with
Garrus
Liara
James
Tali
EDI
Javik
Ashley/Kaidan
Miranda
Zaeed
Thane
Grunt
Legion
Mordin
Reduce EDI back to her supportive role as the Normandy, while Mordin's role remains unchanged. Admittedly, I like James as a new comer, but his role becomes a bit redundant. Legion could serve a secondary role again. I am also partial to including Kal'Reeger in the squad (And not have him dying in ME2 as even an option.)
That is a very rough sketch of ideas I've had to reduce the squad and enhance the stories of those left.

Just never cared for any of them.
Edit* If we're not counting the VS then throw Liara in there.

EDI - Badly written in ME3. Never picked her in the sqaud.
Zaeed - For me, this was the when the DLCs started to suck. He was ok, but seemed too tacked on. Not being able to talk to him and only getting those stupid sentences whereas every other character you use the dialogue with was a foreshadowing of the auto-**** in ME3. Plus his loyalty mission was way too quick. In ME3, pre-Citadel it only got worst because he litterally looked like he was there for .2 seconds because he had to be in the game.
Legion - Hated Legion only being attainable near the end, and worst you can't do his loyalty mission before going to the Collector Base without killing some of the crew. Like, what the hell? And in ME3, I was forced to watch Tali kill him due to accidentally not talking to Kal Regar in ME2. Oops.
Mornith - Not very well handled and only a reasonable choice for a psycho Shepard. Plus ME3 pissed on that choice with diarrhea.

Kaidan - Boring, Carth was better
Ashley - To save her from her ME3 High Heels incarnation
Miranda - Starts off in a high Heeled incarnation.
Jacob - Makes Kaidan look interesting.
Vega - Who?

EDI (platform only, shipboard AI can stay)
The rest of them I am rather fond of, each in their own unique ways.

After this it gets difficult. Samara did not add that much, I suppose. And while he is hilarious, I guess you could cut Grunt.

Ashley because I never really liked her character
Miranda, because she's just boring, and always complains about how perfect she is
Jacob, didn't hate him, but he was boring as a character (least his loyalty mission was fun)
James, just cause I never really cared for him. And he reminds me of that guy from Borderlands
