Zaeed, Kasumi, and Thane are pretty pointless too, but I like them more than the above characters, so I wouldn't cut them as soon.

Cutting EDI is an easy choice since even if you aren't offended by her mobile platform, you don't really lose much with her...although, EDI does have some nice unique dialogue like the other ME3 squad-mates so you would lose that but then, this could apply to ALL the characters, especially the ME1/ME2 characters that don't have unique dialogue on missions....

(Personally, I'm somewhat amused by the hate for her platform...we're talking about ME...a series which EXPLICITLY homaged space opera by designing a hot alien space babe race)

Similarly, I disagree with both Samara and Grunt. One of the strengths of ME is that the galaxy is large and it is reflected in the cast...I like the fact that even though Grunt is a krogan, he is not as invested in the genophage storyline as Wrex is. Similarly, I'm glad that Samara was introduced otherwise the ardat-yakshi storyline would've been foisted on to Liara.

It's somewhat common in sci-fi with alien casts, but for some reason, while the human cast can have a wide variety of opinions and storylines where not every cast member has to be the focal point for a specific storyline even if it involves humans, the alien crewmember seems to have to do it all.

(Not sure if I explained this properly....)

I understand what you're saying. But more perspectives on a species don't have to come with companions, NPCs can provide them as well. Look at Garrus and the turians for example.

Since it's more positive, here are the character's I consider uncuttable without losing a big chunk of my Mass Effect experience

Liara
Mordin
Garrus
Tali
One of Kaidan or Ashley, to die on Virmire
Legion
Wrex
Miranda
And EDI needs to be there as a character, but not necessarily as a squadmate

Here goes:

Remove Miranda from the game and make Jacob a badass cerberus agent (smart and deadly) that was genetically inhanced to be perfect with a crazy father and a hidden sister he needs to protect from him. Oh... and, dear god!! Give him an armor and remove that horrible Spandex. Jacob could have an inner conflict (Paragon vs. Renegade) where he would stay or leave cerberus in ME3 (sqadmate or enemi: this would make James pointless) You could get to know more about Jacob's tormented past during that fist fight at the beginning of ME3. And NO!! He doesn't mary some other chick and retire (girls you have 1 more human love interest that "survives"  and NO he is not gay. Gay people: you have Cortez or Kaiden)

Replace Liara with Shiala. She would still be Benezia's daughter but she would also be a kick ass PURPLE Asari commando. No frekles or eyebrows, instead she would have that leather armor and face painting. She would still have her scientific background. She would still become the shadow broker (more influence PLEASE). Benezia knew that the Thorian would keep her "sort of safe" from the Reaper indoctrination that already started to infect her daughter's mind when she sacrificed her... seems evil but indoctrination is by far worst. Mother knows right! (And Benezia should loose the helmet and mega cleavage dress. I don't care if she succombed to indoctrination or not. This is not an excuse to have her dress like a hooker. She's a matriarch for god's sake)

Give a much better treatment to Morinth (In ME3, she should have been a hidden character with a "semi" love interest storyline where she wouldn't kill you but you also wouldn't get your "mind screewed" Could be very sad and emotional)... Give Samara the multiplayer armor, no Asari Justicar should look like a hooker.

EDI should have remained a shipbound AI. And NO, joker doesn't get to screew his ship for other purpose than maintenance. It could be cool if their was a way to get him and "Trainor/Cortex" to hook-up in stead (you make the best of your own ME3 experience, right?)

Grunt should have simply been Wrex.

Zaeed and Kasumi are both funny, yet pointless.

TL;DNR list

Miranda
EDI (as a squadmate)
Grunt
Zaeed
Kasumi
James

Kinda tough, because a lot of the alien characters add something that I feel expands the universe in a meaningful way, and aside from that, I'm very fond of most of the characters. The human characters would be the ones I'd weed out first, being Zaeed, Kasumi, Ashley, Jacob and, sorry to say, even Jack. The dark history of studying human biotics really starts to make itself known when talking to Kaidan in ME1, so he beat Jack to the punch, regardless of the extreme differences in Jack's case. And out of the aliens, as much as I love 'im, Grunt would be first to make the list. Wrex already introduces us to another side of the Krogan early on, so there isn't much to add. While we do get the rite of passage with Grunt, the rite of passage is not that special in itself. As it stands, Grunt is not even the sole vehicle to get the players to visit Tuchanka, because Mordin also has a reason to bring us there, and he's way more valuable.

I considered the Dr. Eva body version of EDI, but as she's both one of my favorites, and is part of my case for the rejection of the Catalyst's inevitability idea, I can't add her.

The rest of them I am rather fond of, each in their own unique ways.

"Rather than answering the question, let me just throw out that I hate $character"

I could not find 5 characters to remove, just those two and even then it's just EDI's body I'd want gone so I suppose it's more like one and a half.

Grunt: Stereotypical Krogan. Not really useful as a squadmate either in ME2. He had one great line in ME2 that showed a hint of personality: "I was built for strength but didn't earn it." before turning back into a one-note character.

EDI: Having her as a squadmate seems contrived. Also giving her a body and having Joker fawn all over it was terrible. (Note: I did spend the majority of my first playthrough in ME2 trying to figure out how to disconnect EDI. ME1 made me hate A.I.'s).

Kasumi: I really like her as a character. But as others have pointed out, why did we need a thief for a suicide mission?

Morinth: Could have been interesting, instead she is just a completely terrible Renegade decision. Dominate was fun to use though.

Legion. I preferred the Geth as dangerous A.I.'s, not some peaceful A.I. race with a heretic faction. I think the Geth should have remained constant enemies throughout the series and not just token enemy factions in ME2 and ME3 that only appeared only occasionally.

BONUS PICK: Liara in ME3 only. Seriously, Liara is a pretty crappy Shadow Broker if she keeps leaving her duties to go out with Shepard on a mission.

Samara, Kasumi, Zaeed, James, EDI.

As far as James and EDI, I like both of them, just not in the way they were used. They could've had Squadmate Grunt or Wrex in James' spot. Same goes for EDI, as the sassy AI on the Normandy I liked her character, but a fighting sexbot? Wat?

I get that; however, the question was "If you HAD to cut more than 5 squad mates who would they be?". That's not how hypothetical questions work.

Why cut Tali and Kaidan? They're very important characters, Tali finds out about the Reapers and is essential for the Quarian/Geth conflict, whereas Kaidan shows us the world of biotics in ME1.

Jacob - Vega and Kaidan are better characters

Morinth - I like her VA, but Morinth probably should never have been recruitable in the first place. There was too many squadmates in ME2 as it was, and there never was a compelling reason for recruiting a psychopathic serial killer who wants to murder Shepard.

Kasumi - Like her personality and her VA, but if I've got to cut 5 squadmates she would be on the list. As a DLC character she felt less involved with the plot of ME2, since she doesn't interact with other squadmates and can't be engaged in conversation on the ship.

Zaeed - Cut for similar reasons as Kasumi.

EDI - Never needed to be a squadmate.

Which she was able to do just fine without being on the squad, as per the original drafts of the script.

whereas Kaidan shows us the world of biotics in ME1.

Hardly what I would call "vey important", considering that there are other characters that also do that, as well as a voiced codex.

 Hum……

Thinking about it, in trams of plot and overall importance
to the story I would three out.

Samara  cause to me,
aside form being a justicar, doesn’t add much to the overall plot

Jacob again he doesn’t add much aside from some exportation
at the beageing of two IE: we are ceberus and you’ve been dead for 2 years and
the second line is miss-able

Thane. As much as I love thane. We have Garrus, Legion and
Ash [ if alive] as snipers. And as he doesn’t add much to 3 aside form a “cool”
fight sadly he’s role is made redundant.

The following I would keep.

Miranda:

Jack

Garrus

Mordin

Tali

Legion

Wrex

Kaidan/ash

Liara

James

Edi

Why? Because reasons. :bandit:
