Reorte raises a good point.
There is no "essential" squad-mate since none of your squadmates HAVE to be there I think the only plot critical mission with a team-mate throughout the entire trilogy is ironically EDI on Chronos station....
Liara and Miranda both have a part in bringing Shepard back to life. Arguably moreso Miranda than Liara. Mordin develops the anti-Seeker countermeasure that allows Shepard and co. to effectively engage the Collectors in ground combat.
That's plot critical, not mission specific critical.
Mordin is essential to the plot but other than his loyalty mission, there's no mission that you have to take him with you. As soon as you get a third companion in the ME series, other than loyalty missions, the only time you're forced to take someone is Liara in two DLCs (From the Ashes and Shadowbroker - which could be considered her loyalty mission), the Thessia mission, Tali if she's alive for Rannoch and EDI in Chronos station.
By this logic, there isn't a single squadmate who is at all "relevant" except for EDI, and even EDI is only "relevant" for about 7 seconds. Liara and Tali don't do anything particularly special on their respective arcs, nor do they do anything that demands their specific talents.
I actually agree with you...the problem is that the topic is more of a popularity contest...
That said, I'd argue that Jacob is useless based on POWER set (the only criteria one can evaluate characters as a squadmate fairly on). Pull, incidenary ammo and Barrier are not exactly a winning combiantion set of powers in Me2. Combine this with the fact that he got saddled with shotguns (in Me2, it seemed like shotguns had spitting distance) and on insanity, it was impossible for Jacob to actually do anything.....
Anytime I hit Omega, I pick up Zaeed even before I do either the Doctor/Archangel missions....
