Thought I'd ask while it's freash in my head, does anyone on here make portraits? I have a lot of new characters and new creatures in the project I'm working on and I dont have the magical powers to make portraits that fit with the rest of the game. I dont know the rules for posting pictures here either so... no pic yet.

Yeah thanks for whatever help you can offer.

If you have the image you can let NWN make the portrait for you:
  • Place the jpeg file (e.g. my_pic.jpg) in the portraits subdirectory
of where Neverwinter Nights is installed (typically
    C:\\NeverwinterNights\\NWN\\portraits\\).
  • Start Neverwinter Nights, then start (or load) a game.
  • Enter the console command "ConvertPortrait" followed by the name of
the image without the extension (e.g. "ConvertPortrait my_pic").
  • Find the .tga files in the
    portraits
subdirectory, zip them up into a single archive file, and share it with the community.
Taken from nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Portrait. You can find much more information there. You might have to crop the image a bit depending on how large it is and what exactly is displayed.

I don't know about the exact rules about posting images that are not your own, but you can always upload them an image hosting service an post the link here, if unsure. But I don't think it'll be much of a problem.

Custom Portraits Guide

If you have access to Photoshop (paid) or the GIMP (free), or any other image editing software that can handle .tga files, you can whip up your own portraits.  The guide will show you the exact dimensions you need for each size, which can help you in cropping your portraits to look the best.

I think the issue here is not the actual dimensions or format of the portraits, but the creation of them. The OP seems to require the skills of an actual portrait maker, hence the mention of those "fitting" with the rest of the game. There's two roads you may take regarding this, if such is the case. You can sort through some of the portraits in the vault, find the author, provided they actually did or edited the portraits themselves, and try and contact them. I don't know if Lisa is still around, but she was sort of the preeminent portrait maker back in the day.

Aside of that, you could find a prolific author and their works, and simply adequate your own character's appearance to those. This would ensure all of it fits in an aesthetic manner.

Good luck!

<propping up the easel...>

An alternative that I have employed fairly successfully is to modify a screenshot with GIMP's (or a similar filter in PS) "Oilify" or texturing filters.

For the Crone...

...I did a simple Oilify:

It's not perfect, nor spectacular, but it is quick and fits in.

Back in April I started a thread called "Visual Tutorial on Images in Threads" in the toolset area of these boards. As well as my contribution, other's added to the thread so there should be all the information you need to enable you to post pictures in here. If you do not want to use the link, I have also "bumped" the thread as it seems like every month or two someone asks how to do it or says they don't know how.

Thank you everyone.

Asymmetric, I dont have an image to use as a portrait yet. That's why I asked. The best I've got is the sketch I used to model the creature.

The Amethyst Dragon, I'm glad there are places that tell you the dimensions needed.

Master Jax, Exactly thank you. When I look through the vault I see mostly reposts of portraits ripped from other games but I think I know someone from somewhere else who at least used to do nwn portraits. I'll see if I can commision a batch from them.

Rolo Kipp, I'll definately be taking that aproach for random encounter monsters (like the base game did) but I'd like the characters to have portraits like the oficial characters.

Tarot Redhand, That is an awesome help. Yeah I open every thread on a page in a batch so If I didnt see it then it must have been lost under every other post.

I use the site noted below for adding portraits to NPCs. There's a wide selection to choose from, and even regular looking portraits for commoners.

That is cool. I'll see if something like what I need is in there.
