What Non-Squadmate would you have chosen to join your Squad?

Now I could, of course, go on listing ten, twenty minor characters with the potential to be fun squadmates or supporting crew - just goes to show how great the character writing's always been for this series - but I'll limit myself to my three top choices;
1. Shiala.
Well duh.
A trained asari commando with a unique appearance, a wonderful voice actress, and who probably represents "normal" asari culture far better than the introverted Liara, the detached Samara or the psychotic Aria.
She appeals a lot to me in large part due to her personality being downplayed, visible more through her actions and words than being loud and emotive - a sign of intelligence and maturity that the other 'nice girls' often lack.
2. Kal'Reegar
Aside from being a great potential Tech/Combat hybrid ala Garrus, Kal'Reegar has an endearing can-do attitude and a large dose of common sense that other quarians sorely lack.
Like Shiala above, Kal provides a different perspective on his own culture than Tali would - Tali is the quirky engineer and an admiral's daughter, whereas Kal'Reegar is apparently a member of a military family and a far more down-to-earth man who seems a lot more aware of his surroundings than Tali. He might provide us with more insight into quarian society than merely being a walking codex entry.
3. Balak
I was going to put Kirrahe here due to the lack of salarians but at least we still have Mordin. Batarians, though? Never one!
Balak is an incredible character, shown to be patriotic and caring for his people - despite attempting to go rogue and killing millions. Hey, that reminds me of someone... Didn't Shepard kill three hundred thousand innocent people to further her goals of defeating the Reapers after going rogue from the Alliance?
To me, Balak would not only provide a great perspective on batarians, the Terminus systems, the humans from alien eyes and of course, extremism and terrorism from the eyes of the desperate perpetrators - but also a powerful counterbalance to Shepard (in particular a Renegade Shepard) and blurring the lines.
Renegade!Shepard's blithering pro-human crusade can be little different from Balak's own methods and morality, after all.

Now I predict a lot of random lists of names, if lists at all, and sarcastic/"ironic" trollpicks like whatever Volus the poster happens to be thinking about at the time, and all I can say about that is... Go nuts?

Barla Von. Telling by Armax scores, he either has uber combat abilities, or uber hacking/fraud abilities.
... So either way he'd be a serious asset to the crew. I like it.

So people have been suggesting replacements and I figure, what's the fun in that? Don't we want more characters instead of less?

While I agree about Shiala, and am on the fence about Balak, I can't agree about Reegar. Yeah, he's a badass, especially for a quarian, but we've alread got down-to-earth military types in Kaidan and Jacob. Simply being a quarian doesn't change that.
I'd have to go with Kirrahe, in fact, I wrote a fanscript for him with everything filled in along with my brother
Here it is on Reddit

I think he provides a necessary counterbalance to the idea that the genophage may not be the right idea: After all, Wrex has shown an utter lack of understanding regarding a krogan population boom. Even without the genophage, Kirrahe is a far more pragmatic person, moreso than Garrus, but not as much as Javik.
He is also a useful Combat/Tech hybrid, and has great history with Shepard and the other members of the squad, specifically Garrus, Kaidan, Ashley, and Tali.

Seriously. She puts Shepard to shame if you're Sole Survivor or care at all about Jack.

Tela Vasir is also high on my list, probably in the Top 5 or 10. Aside from being yet another Combat Biotic like Samara and Wrex, she's also a great foil for Shepard.
As she notes before she expires, they're a lot alike - the Shadow Broker is no worse than the Illusive Man, so again if you're a Renegade!Shep she's a close mirror.
And that armor just looks fantastic.

Like I said in the other thread, the only reason I would spare Vasir is if I had a slower, more painful way for her to die. Preferably implemented by Shepard himself.
Agreed. Tela is nothing but an egocentric *****.

Well, that depends on the Shepard. My Shep wasn't even angry with Han for opening fire on the dreadnought.

Geez. I've started fights with friends just for driving bad. Han is the closest anyone's recklessness has brought Shepard to death (as far as how the whole sequence plays out. It's a pretty close call). He deserved a more than a punch to the gut.
