He's meh, still the best Batarian in the game probably. It appears BioWare never bothered to characterize one properly.

I like the merchant in Omega, who gives me the "uppity human discount".

Don't know about that....James crash-landing the shuttle on Mars almost took everyone out too. Too bad Shepard can't read him the riot act for that instead of just making jokes about it. "No more shuttle crashes" ? Really? How about, "If you ever do anything that stupid again, you'll be the one relieved of duty." The shuttle has guns for crapsake!!
I still like James though.

Balak is a whiner, whose reasons for attacking humans is always on shaky ground. First with his defense in BotS, and then in ME3, making some loose connection with Shepard beating him on the asteroid and how that led to the Hegemony getting indoctrinated. Whiner.
Bray is cooler. He's just out for himself, and doesn't hold these kind of unfounded grudges.

I mean, Balak has potential. He's a typical example of the kind of shady allies you gather around you in ME3. He doesn't have the necessary context though which is fine since he's a rather unimportant side character. If he had the necessary attention, screentime, character development and such he could be an interesting squaddie. He just isn't as it is.

What? No, when you kill him he'll get replaced some other Batarian (who is actually a better guy).Balak only appears if you let him go or arrest him.
