Hmm, since Wrex is no real Squadmate in ME3, I'd pick him.
Besides him?

Bring back Miranda in ME3 as squadmate and Zaeed.

Previous squadmates are still squadmates, so they don't really count.

The idea is to lift forward the interesting side-characters that make the setting come alive.

In that case ...

Gianna Parasini as Info Broker and Assassin/Tech and LI.
Executor Pallin as Turian Soldier/Tech with command bonuses in a squad
Captain Riley as Soldier/Sniper - I love his comments as a desillusioned cop.

I think you mean Captain Bailey, because Captain Riley is a she. And not a cop. (And incidentally another cool potential side character).

Now that I think about it... it seems like all the characters who were explicitly shown to be certified badass, were shown as such as a prelude to and justification for their recruitment. I conclude that no one else in the galaxy is worthy of being in Shepard's party.

I guess Reegar could cut the mustard. He has Jayne's voice, for one.

Screw balak, give me bray any day.

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar and I cannot but agree with you completely.

Also - there are few things I like as much as a layered, complex character.

If that's the case, then why the dislike for Balak?

Look, I get that some people have difficulty understanding that everyone has reasons for their actions, even horrible people - but it's true. Even violent terrorists have goals, ideals, loves and wants.

How is Balak less of a complex character than Saren, when Saren is depicted pretty much exactly the same way?

Well, I did not explicitly state that Balak was not layered or an uninteresting character. I simply liked Bray better; he was pragmatic but not entirely unconcerned, and had some neat, near-snide lines, as opposed to Balak who was nothing but angry and vengeful. And while that in itself would not have been to the detriment of the interpersonal dynamic he would have with Shepard, that third game was just so bloody grim, a bit of levity/less darkness and brooding, would be better delivered by the mercenary Bray rather than the retribution-obsessed Balak.

Though I suppose I should have expanded my point to explain/justify the reasoning behind it. I am sorry if I caused any confusion.

I am sorry but a Batarian is a no go. Shep has a lot of personal history with them and the Alliance really dislikes them. I also really dislike them.

That's the whole point.

Add to that Mass Effect's anti-racism/prejudice message and you've got a setup so clean cut I'm frankly still a little shocked they didn't do it already.

I guess it's possible they may have intended to make the Hegemony-Alliance relationship more prominent in ME3 (would certainly explain the importance of Arrival), but simply did not have the resources or time to do it, and instead it was an idea axed early on so that they could focus on the Tuchanka and Rannoch story arcs that the players were already invested in.

Shiala, Gianna and even Captain Matsuo all had great potential, with Shiala and Gianna even dropping hints about possible LI in game. I think the personal antagonism with Balak is too great to function effectively as a squad mate, but I think having a batarian in 3 was sorely lacking with the whole galactic unity theme.

As far as shipmates go, I wish to every god they had given us the option to take a non-death-by-tweet Emily Wong or Paragon-Interrupted Khalisa instead of you-know-who.

Yeah, I still don't understand why they put that... Thing in the game. Way to completley break the immersion, guys.

Maybe in the next game they can have a character who is voice acted and modeled after AngryJoe Vargas. He'll sit on your ship reviewing salarian video games.
