My male human noble in DA:O was sleeping with both Leliana and Morrigan, and had a fling with both Isabela (with Leliana) and the elven maid from the origin story. It didn't make him a paragon of virtue, but that was kind of the point. I was roleplaying him as more of a realistic medieval noble than a white knight from some legend.

Let's see.

Joshua COusland had sex with...
Iona
Isabela
Zev
Leliana
Morrigan
Several pearl workers
A kiss from Bella
A kiss from that woman who hast he missing brother
Did the DR with Morrigan
Romanced Leli fully

So over 10 woman and a man where bedded.

My two human nobles (both males):

Canon romances Leliana, sleeps with Iona, gets two kisses from Bella, kisses the girl with the missing brother, sleeps with Isabella, and sleeps with several pearl workers. As soon as he gets involved with Lel, he plays it straight with her. She's the only one for him.

The alt is the same, except with Morrigan.

I have a female human noble as well: Romances and marries Alistair, sleeps with Dairren, flirts with basically every male character in the game, has a threesome with Alistair and Isabella, and sleeps with a few women as well. She's my most promiscuous character.

My human female mage: Romances Alistair, becomes his mistress, and is a virgin like him.

Hardly. Is that why even in an ideal version of Mass Effect and a perfect playthrough, I would have the Citadel utterly walloped by Sovereign and the geth, a huge portion of the galaxy destroyed, several squadmates dead, every major character facing significant trauma, and numerous other side characters killed?

Yet picking consistently paragon options is treated better in the game.  So roleplaying a paragon by your words should not have everything go your way.  Name one paragon option that comes to bite you in the ass.

I don't think the player should have the ability to have sex with ten women just because their character is that totally awesome when it just doesn't add much meaningful content to the story.

I do agree with this.

If a player character is going to be able to have flings with NPCs it should serve some purpose in the story, and not just be there for the sake of an achievement or wish fulfillment.

Why not?

I did it in real life for no other purpose than wish fulfillment and notches under the belt. Why can't I do it in a role-playing game? It seems like role-playing to me.

Not everything has to have a purpose.

Again why? WHy can't things exsist to establish the character you are playing.

I don't think a fade to black and see ya later really adds much depth to the game.

If casual flings were in the game I'd rather there were consequences, both good and bad. Say for example an NPC seduces your character, only for it to later be revealed that the character is an enemy agent who ensnared you in a honeytrap.  While your character is sleeping and out of their armor, he/she is ambushed by an assassin sent by the game's Big Bad, and must now fight for survival without armor. Or perhaps your character needs a noble's support for something or other, and that noble isn't inclined to give it, but sex is used as a way of manipulating said noble into giving that support. Or perhaps the NPC is someone you run across on a quest, and the choice to have the fling either inadvertently causes that quest to succeed or fail. Or perhaps pillow talk with the new paramour reveals some crucial bit of intelligence your PC wouldn't have gained otherwise.

There are a lot of possibilities really. But if casual flings are in the game, it is better that they serve a purpose within the story than having them without a purpose.

Everything very clearly does not go Shepard's 'way' by playing Paragon.

No it doesn't. By it's definition of role-playing, my characters integrity is whatever the hell I choose it to be.

It's perfectly in character for my Elissa, my human female noble to be a promiscuous wench that sleeps with everything that moves. She even gets Alistair to join her in it with Isabella!

Maybe you should... play the damn game!

Uh no it does not. Why? Because the casual sex is from npcs it makes sense from. The game is not forcing you to have sex, it is an option. If my character wants to bang anything that moves, that is his/her right to, you can be a virgin for all I care, what you do in yours does not affect me and it be vise versa. Was the fling from Isabela and Zev hurting them?

If you're engaging in the options, then that is likely the point if you're not, I don't see how that's true.

Something like God of War's interactive sex cutscenes would be enjoyable for a non-romance playthrough.

I would very, very, very, very heavily frown on all of this.

Players should not be punished for romancing who they want to romance.
