Dozens of Japanese commuters pushed a 32-tonne train carriage away from the platform to free a woman who had fallen into the 20cm (8in) gap between it and the platform.
The act of collective heroism was captured by a newspaper photographer.
A public announcement that a passenger was trapped prompted about 40 people to join train officials to push the carriage, whose suspension system allows it to lean to either side, the Yomiuri newspaper reported.
The unnamed woman in her 30s was then pulled out uninjured to applause from onlookers at JR Minami-Urawa station, just north of Tokyo.

See what happens if people work together, you can move trains lulz.

After just an eight-minute delay, the train went on its way.

And not a single **** was given that day.

Big props to Japan, I can't even get people to hold the door open for me here in America.

Seriously though, glad she's okay.

The Japanese are awesome for this stuff. Like the tsunami aftermath, everybody helping each other out.

If there is a nuclear holocaust, I'm betting the Japanese will rebuild their communities with a lot less trouble than anywhere else.

Of course. It's a fundamental part of their culture, when America and Europe to a lesser degree promote individualism.

Having been to several Asian countries, my general impression is that their culture is more community-based while a lot of Western countries, especially America, is very individualistic. It doesn't surprise me to see these kinds of things happening in Asia.

We should also look into the less fancy sides of community focused mentalities. Peer pressure and strict social conformity are major issues in those cultures, to the point that you are being alienated if you just chose to wear something different than what accepted social graces would expect. Trying to step out of the masses can be social suicide.

It doesn't have to be that bad everywhere, but it IS an everpresent problem with such mentalities. Why do you think Japan has such a high suicide rate amogst their pubescent populace?

On a more serious note, before all the Westerners join in another round of self-loathing...

If you are in need of help, you are more likely to find strangers willing to lend a hand in the United States or parts of Europe than you would in Japan. I've lived in both the US and Japan, and the Japanese have a culture of not getting involved. If you are involved in a car accident or you are stranded on the side of the road, you are more likely to have someone pull over to help you in the West than in Japan. In Japan people will just keep driving even if you attempted to flag down help, and this isn't just when dealing with Westerners. They are also like that with their own.

That being said there is no question that the Japanese are better at rallying together when the chips are really down, and without any civil disorder.
