You play that primitive human referenced in ME1 (with that thing Shaira gave you) who the protheans implanted a tracker in and abducted. You escape/work for them/cause chaos/bring down the Protheans/fight the Reapers/whatever.

Who says it has to be a prequel? There are 2 years unaccounted for with Shepard's death.

This seems like the obvious answer.

I would prefer a prequel to take place between the 2 year span that Shepard is MIA. This way, there's never any mention of Shepard's actions, only MAYBE brief mentions of his/her presumed death. As for plot, I'd prefer if it was just a small, isolated story that matters more to the protagonist on a personal level than it does to the public at large. It doesn't have to be saving a whole planet, or even a whole city. Mass Effect 2 had a lot of examples of such stories, where you got to fight various scumbags and the corrupt and have it be little more than a blurb in the news somewhere in the end, gaining you no official notoriety.

This is similar to my thoughts, but thinking it could be a a few to several years before ME1 just the same. Original, smaller time stuff, with characters and events that nobody has heard of, that doesn't shake the galaxy or world. From the napkin doodles we've heard of so far from Bioware, something like this is possible. The downside is them throwing out names of familiar characters I personally never did, or no longer want to explore.

Who is the important woman/girl he's going to protect this time around? He already killed Gillian, which would have been the obvious answer...

I dont want a prequel, it seems just wrong to me. Colour me bad but thats how i feel. Most of the past is covered within the codex, the game story or from the mass of comics that are there to fill in back story for peeps within the mass effect universe.

We know what happened within the 2 years shep was out because thats been covered by the comics and the shadowbroker dlc. If we went back to the protheans we know they fail. We have already done a stint as a cerberus operative so been there done that and more then anything whatever we do will be over shadowed by what shepard is doing and we know the eventual outcome of nearly everyone they cover.

What i would like is a sequel where its fresh, new story added to the franchise with no point that we have an idea of what is going to happen or what the outcome will be. A new hero or anti hero who isnt like shepard. Not militery or a hero in that right. I would personally love what i have in my sig but thats my own preference.

Also on a last note going back to another npc has the danger of alienating old players who dont wish to be part of that npcs story even if the game is amazing thus limiting the franchise to specific members of the community.

The First Contact War is really nothing. It literally lasted two months and was basically the Alliance and the Turians flipping out about each other and taking over one base. That's what it says in the first novel, at least.

I still think that a "Midquel" where you play as Garrus during his time on Omega would be awesome. Maybe not ME4, but some kind of gaiden title thus making it acceptable that it's smaller scale with no real customization.

Still, being able to make Garrus' choices, getting to know his squad - especially Sidonis - considering what we know happens? It's incredibly grim - and, to me, a great potential story.

Hell, I can imagine the game ending with Garrus' final stand on Omega, taking down the Blue Suns gunship singlehandedly before digging in for the long haul.

Slavers! Imagine, you are a slave, you escape, then you get revenge! Or free more slaves... It can take place during the two years Shepard was dead! And before Shepard blew up Arahot... Well, I think that was the name... I can't remember... Huh, Batarians were slavers, right? I honestly didn't read the codex, due to my laziness... Oh, and they can make you choose your race! Within reason, of course... Oh, and this way, it would have almost no connection to the trilogy!

And I want an option of a non-lethal way of completing the mission! I'll admit, I don't trust Bioware with stealth-ish games, though...

If it is a prequel and it's set during the first contact, doesn't that mean that the only aliens we would get to see are the turians? That just sounds really lame.

I've got it:

A made for the Extranet special movie "Gethnado" Starring Commander Shepard, Tali'Zorah, Kal'Reegar, Daro'Xen, Han'Gerrel, Zaal'Koris, Veetor, Garrus Vakarian, Ashley Williams, Javik, Liara, Joker, EDI, James Vega.... etc. Well you get the picture.

And the sequel; Gethnado vs. Leviathorian.

I suspect if it is a prequel, it will be about human expansion, and tie into the reapers somehow, and pave the way for tons of synthetic vs organic foreshadowing, and ****** off everyone for both not being mentioned in the codex of the previous games and for reinforcing a plot a lot of people hate.

That good enough for you?

I still think it’d be sweet if:

Reapers harvest every 50k years. Why? Why do they need such vast, vast numbers? What do they do in between the 50k year harvest cycle. What if... what if the reapers are off fighting their own war... and this is why they need to replenish their numbers. Something bigger, badder, nastier that the reapers were in all actuality holding off @ the edge of the universe. Something nasty enough to cause the Reapers to lose so many they HAVE to havest billions and billions every cycle. Now, with the reaper threat eliminated... the real battle for earth has just begun!

the relationship to the current MEU is incongruent with any prequel, as the Human race is not fully explored in reference to that much of a distant past. Apparently billions of years has went by without humans before Shep even makes his/her first appearance and our introduction into the MEU via a short lived human experience there. We have no history to 'prequel'. It'd all have to be made up newly discovered, leaving our current knowledge off the radar.

edit: never say made up...

We all love conspiracies, how about a Council cover-up? Your character is an agent for the Shadow Broker, working to take down a conspiracy to overthrow the galactic council and flare up the war between the humans and Turians again? Throw in some additional fan-service with a backstory of Zaeed Massani (now voiced by Ray Winstone) on board a Turian Frigate, a young (Matriach) Benezia, some Terra Firma protesters; then just kick back and sip some Bollinger through your emergency induction port.

This sounds quite interesting, Mass Effect does just take place in one galaxy, there's bound to be worse things out there than reapers. To preserve organic life, they had to reap organic resources... not 100% plausible, but hey, this is Mass Effect.

A prequel should play a lot like ME2. A story about a squad of specialists working around the government's back to solve a problem nobody wanted to acknowledge.  Perhaps you need to prevent a galactic war?  Maybe the terminus is on the brink of renewed hostilities?  Maybe someone somewhere has unearthed extremely advanced technology (prothean or reaper or other) and threatens to slide the galaxy into chaos?  Such a story would allow for new characters, all the old and established species, new locations and organizations, as well as new enemies.

Since humans are almost a necessary part of any sci-fi story, it should be set within the past 30 years, maybe right at the onset of human integration into galactic society. This would allow for a new perspective for the player if a human PC is required, or an interesting plot point if you are allowed to choose your species. Heck, for the lore buffs, maybe even throw in a mission where you witness the Anderson/Saren fiasco for kicks.

However, I would much prefer a sequel to any attempt at a prequel. I want new stories, and I want to stay as far away from rehashing the reaper threat as possible.

Please no prequel, or current timeline with a character (Garrus, Liara, etc) that was once a supporting character.

New game must be with new story set sometime after the Reaper War and with new PC.
