True. I think the lack of a PC voice in DA means that you somehow manage to relate to your own PC more.

Still, Every review so far has said that the emotions ME2 evokes are much stronger than those in ME1, so I'm hoping for something vaguely similar to DA-quality.

I don't know, might just mean that it evokes more epicness than actual player input though...

Ah, true, hadn't considered that...

We can hope. Then we can tear it apart for not being Morrigan enough in eight days.

Friggin Americans and your early game releases *shakes fist*

And there would be a lot more of ME fanfics if Garrus or Wrex were romanceable.

Americans? Sorry, it is releasing on the 26th, correct? or is the Euro release different? I live in the UAE, and we get the European copies of games.

And regarding Tali, I'd like to see what sort of person she's become before attempting anything. Not suggesting something, it's just that she seems a bit unsure/young in ME1, I get the feeling she's grown up quite a bit.

Also, am I the only one not drooling over Miranda? Fine, she's pretty hot, but still...

EDIT: Oh, come on... agh, I'll only be able to play ME2 on the Friday it's released... completely booked for the next 2 weeks, scoring for the Desert classic over the next weekend. Bummer.
Reuben, you'll be busy making more epic fan-art when I actually start playing...

I don't really like Miranda either. I can't place my finger on it, maybe because she screams Mary (Canon?) Sue to me...

Tali sounds more grown up this time, but you have to admit she had one hot alien bod in the first ME ;)

I'm in the UK, so I'm not sure when it's coming out here either... but probably yeah making more fanart ;)

mmm... hips... Yeah, I understand us and Tali completely.

UK release is the 29th according to Wikipedia. It's a Friday, I think. Funny, MAG has exactly the same UK and US release dates as ME2. Anyone looking forward to that?

I , for one missed the PC not speaking!  Plus I think DA has more room for creativity

My theory is that there is a lot more closure in ME around major events in the game. It is a much tighter storyline.

I see a lot of fanfiction, and even my own fanfiction, that exists to work through the emotions of a particular scene. In DAO there are so many things that could have been fleshed out better, especially with the PC's romantic interest. The time where the origin ends to Ostagar, after Connor/Isolde, when Alistair is suggested as a candidate for Landsmeet, in Denerim for Landsmeet, Morrigan's deal.. etc.

The Alistair Factor is not something to be ignored. It is known.

Beyond that, it's the open-endedness of the game for certain. The choices you make in game just make it a natural sandbox for people to jump in and play around in.

Being fantasy over sci-fi is a big factor too. For me personally, it's a lot easier (and more engaging) to write in a fantasy environment over a sci-fi one. Add to that the complex and flawed characters of Dragon Age, and it's all over. People's imaginations run wild, and the fan extrapolations of the story reflect that.

Most of what she said...

The open endedness of the game is what got me to write.  All those possibilities got stuck in my head and I just had to get them out.

I found the characters in ME less inspiring to be honest.  I did, however, play ME for the first time after a couple of DA play throughs.  That probably colored my opinion greatly.

As to writing sci fi vs fantasy, to me the genre doesn't matter so much.  Though I imagine with Sci fi, I can write things like 'frenimies' and nto have a certain person waggle a finger at me.  *whistle*

@Reuben

Agh... Sadly, yes, MAG is console-only. PS3 only at that, so no MAG for me either. Still, it sounds utterly awesome. Imagine an FPS somewhere between ArmA and Call of Duty (ridiculously hardcore/tactical, and arcadey), with heavy emphasis on inter-squad gameplay and tactics.

This sounds pretty standard... up until you add huge skill trees, character customisation (not just a"choose one of six skins" affair either), and up to 256 players online. After seeing that number, my jaw hit the freaking floor...

PS3... want...

@The actualy purpose of the topic...

There are a lot more possiblities and open ends in the DA universe, and I'm sure that it helped the flow of fanfics significantly. Still, if Mass Effect was as much of an emotional rollercoaster as DA, then I'm sure there'd be a lot more fan fiction entries.

I know, Mag sounds very tasty, but I can't play it >< I can't wait for APB though. Ironically both games with really stupid names but awesome sounding acronyms...

APB could be utterly epic, I just hope it doesn't feel too small, or too generic, as both would kill the game. The "no subscription model" plan seems pretty sweet, and as long as the microtransactions are for unique customisation items, I think that it could work out well (dont want to see people holding Pancor Jackhammers because they payed twenty {intert currency here} for it.

Going even further off topic, how do you feel about Just Cause 2? The tech behind it is pretty damn impressive...

Looks very pretty, but not that interested in it, since I never played Just Cause 1, but I might try it out of curiosity's sake, if it's got good reviews.

APB sounds utterly brilliant, if only for it's character creation kit. Can't wait to experiment on THAT baby!

Yeah, I honestly found it hard to believe that they're letting players use the devs' character creation tools, let alone something as sophisticated as APB's set. Characters, bodies, faces, tatoos, cars, clothing... everything is customisable.

Still, Just Cause 1 was flawed but fun, number 2 looks like the same gameplay with a massive layer of polish. The grappling hook is enough to make me try it out. You can hook people to objects, use it to scale buildings, and tether things to each other. Three enemies+moving truck=fun. The applications of it seem to be ridiculous. And considering it keeps a stable frame rate a 1000 sqkm area with explosions, particles, etc, ridiculous draw distances and no loading screens, I'd like to see what other devs can do with the Avalanche 2.0 engine. Apparently the graphics at a distance have been adjusted to be like the way the human eye percieves far away objects, so it feels really, really big.

That depends!  Then you start getting into whether or not the characters would use such an archaic phrase...

To be honest I haven't even played ME so I don't know the storyline. I plan on trying it out and possibly write something from it though from how linear it seems that might be harder than I'd want it to be lol

Tallon, I tried to write for ME1 because it fascinated me (first time I'd gotten involved in a console game). I just couldn't because it was so linear. There were drips and drabs that could be fleshed out, but not enough to really hold my interest.

I've been looking at ME and see it sort of echos some Star Wars. What might be a way out of that sort of linear thinking is to making something outside of the main storyline sort of how it effects a made up character you have. That's the only thing I can think of rather than focus on main story solely.

and, if you take a look at fictionpress (the sister site to ff.net), you'll note that people are substantially more predisposed to write fantasy based internet fiction than sci-fi based fiction. That might have to do with the relative difficulty in grasping a science-based setting over a medieval setting.

Nitpick: as someone who has been known to enjoy a history book or two, I'd rather say 'science-based setting over FANTASY setting'. Mostly the latter has very little to do with actual middle ages, at least in fanfiction.

As a counter-example, I would like to point out the huge amount of Star Trek fanfic. Personally I don't believe it matters that much whether the setting is scifi or fantasy, after all we're not talking about hard scifi here. Most scifi is just fantasy with tech-oriented names for the magic.

Anyway. Carry on :-)

Plus in ME, you're a military officer, pretty hard to write stories about someone's who's profession REQUIRES a stick up your ass...
