As a counter-example, I would like to point out the huge amount of Star Trek fanfic. Personally I don't believe it matters that much whether the setting is scifi or fantasy, after all we're not talking about hard scifi here. Most scifi is just fantasy with tech-oriented names for the magic.

Anyway. Carry on :-)

That's an excellent point. The first 'major' fanficdom was Star Trek and it was mostly gals then too. So 'writing sci fi is harder' or 'ladies don't like sci-fi' wouldn't seem to make sense.

Aside from the fact that the assumption of "girls don't like sci-fi because science is too hard for them" is patently misogynistic. It also makes the dangerous assumption that the "science" part of "science-fiction" has anything to do with things actually possible in our universe of Newtonian physics.

Thats just silly.

Since when has science had anything to do with science fiction?

I reserve the right to be as silly as I want to be. Ain't nobody gonna tell Rage what to do! >: (

Ya know, Rage, I'm never going to be able to look at those little mole guys on ME the same now. I'll always think of you. In fact, I'll probably say "Ain't nobody gonna tell Rage what to do!" at least once when I see them....... Further convincing Hubby that I am probably waaay too engrossed in these games.

I'm sorry I'm being such a curmudgeon. You see, the other day my l completed the romance with Leliana and since then I've been having trouble sleeping. I'm afraid for my eyelashes.

Like WAR OF THE WORLDS or FORBIDDEN PLANET were really hard sci-fi or something?

Actually, the answer would be 'never.' Star Wars was based on earlier science fiction pulps. In fact, 'adventure' sci-fi is older than hard science fiction and has always been more popular.

Take HG Well's The Island of Dr. Merou. The idea that you could make intelligent animals by vivisection and surgery was ludicrous when it came out, but that's not what was important. What was important was the question of what happens when man plays god and the fragile nature of civilization.

Because Kaidan is not as interesting as Alistair (and I am sasyign this despite my lack of respect for the guy). Likewise, Ashley is no where near being as interesting Morrigan.

Well most science-fiction is based more literally on fiction, but like most of them they were only fiction until we decided sometime in the future to replicate what they wrote, making them science!

Kinda! Sorta...

Man, you must have not seen any of those sci-fi movies or read most of the books from the '50's and '60's. Lucky bastard.
