Because Kaidan is not as interesting as Alistair (and I am sasyign this despite my lack of respect for the guy). Likewise, Ashley is no where near being as interesting Morrigan.

Correction:  Ashely is no where near being interesting period.

I tend to think fantasy as a genre is just more popular. The scifi/fantasy shelf in bookshops is almost *always* dominated by the latter unless you go to a non-mainstream shop.

I imagine not being able to play a female character in ME (I think? I haven't played it) may contribute. Especially if we're correct in the assumption that most fanfic writers are female.

I dunno if comparing the number of stories between the two matters, however. I'm more interested in quality over quanity, and I...tend to want to ignore the stories that are largely smut and would read practically the same with Alistair/Cousland exchanged for Jack/Jill. (Yes, I have prejudices... Sorry. :P)

The female character has better VO, the first game where I play female more than male (when having the choice).

Ain't that the truth! I didn't have even the teeniest of qualms when I left her to die. In fact, I might have giggled.... Of course, I had done nothing in my spare time but play ME, so I was loopy...

Hey I heard that chick talking to her sister. She was trying to move in on my man! So she died in a nuclear blast. THAT'S WHAT YOU GET.

I KNEW I liked you! LOL And yes, sadly, I admit to counting down to ME2 coming out next week... I have a to do list for this weekend that includes:

Laundry completely caught up
Buy extra uniform pants for the boy child so I don't have to wash any next week
Make and freeze dinners
Lay in gaming supplies (soda, veggie tray, hummus, chocolate)
House sparkling so I can neglect it for a week

Ok, maybe not buying new uniform pants, but you get my drift. LOL

Hey, that sounds like my todo list for this weekend!  The house being cleaned part so I can neglect it, that is.

:)

I am going to have to hold off on ME2 mayhem for at least a week or so after it comes out.  My mother is coming out to visit and I very well can't tell her to go to her room and watch TV so I can play on the xbox :P  Well...I suppose I /could/, but I'd rather not face the mother guilt later for it.

Husband is beside himself excited for ME2, though.

I can only agree to this statement. It generally seems like there is nearly no fanfiction out here that doesn't incorporate any kind of romance between a female warden and either Zevran and/or Alistair.
I mean no offense by this and some of these stories are pretty good, but I also think that fanfictions about other characters have a difficulty of being read or watched at all, for there is no Alistair/Zev in it that makes the fangirls continue to read it.

And that's actually a shame, for there might be some, let me call it "less-mainstream" (i.e. no Alistair/Zevran) out there that might be worth reading.

lol
But I'm not talking about any character in particular, there are so many other party characters that would deserve a nice piece of writing.
Sten is just one of them.
Morrigan, Leliana, Wynne, Oghren, Shale...
They too are great characters that are more or less ignored by the reading/writing community her. (Perhaps because of the fact that most writers (readers?) are women, wanting to see their favorite characters live with their PC in the end)

This is extremely true.  There is at least one piece that I follow (you know who you are..so update already) that isn't primarily focused on PC/Zev or PC/alistair romance.  It's written from the viewpoint of another character in the game.

I also have a story that I started (which I really need to pick up again) about some of the non-popular characters and I can say that it sees far less traffic than my relationship stories.

I think it comes down to people getting attached to certain characters and they just want to see how the story could progress post game and such.

I agree on your last paragraph, especially since people often continue to hold up the sympathies they make during the game. (I, for example, never really liked Alistair. He always seemed so weepy to me. My favorite is either Shale or Morrigan).

About that story: Whom are you talking to? I might want to read this too. (or are you talking about mine:blink:?)

I never could get into Mass Effect. Don't know why, maybe sci-fi just doesn't appeal to me as much as medieval fantasy.
