From what I've seen, the only couple to have a healthy relationship and not get forced/helped together via the PC is Wade and Herren.
So yeah, I'm all for characters actually doing crap, like getting in healthy relationships, without the PC being in there left right and centre since they are too incompetent to do it themselves.
Andraste's flaming ass, it's like I'm their meddling mother.
Will NPC's have the ability to have their own romances?

If you want to try a game that did do this I'd recomend Catherine. Depending on your choices & how you interact with them it would effect other character's relationships.
It might be nice to see in Dragon Age, for the same reason it was nice to see Tali & Garrus. It was just good seeing characters grow outside of the player character relationship. And apart from frenemy type companions its nice to see friends gain some measure of happiness inspite of anything else that might have occured in the plot. Even aside from love interests, I really would like to see how Morrigan handles motherhood. I suppose it helps lore & immersion if companions feel more like real people who have their own lives aside from whatever events have tied them to the player character. I think Biowares done a pretty good job of that already.
