Personally, I thought it was somewhat unique that while the PLAYER never knows what quarians look like, everyone else in-universe of course knows what they look like and SHEPARD treats it as such.
(In citadel DLC, Tali mentions that in Fleet and Flotilla, the female quarian got sick because presumably during the romance/love scenes, she has to take off at least her mask...and fleet and flotilla in-universe is akin to Titanic in terms of appeal/popularity)

I get so tired of that arguement. "Well, they could have done (insert item) better!" Well, D'UH! EVERYTHING can be better. When DaVinci carved 'Micheal', he probably thought he could have done better. When Micheal looked at how un-endowed his statue was, I'm sure HE thought DaVinci could have done better (rimshot). Saying they could do better is like saying water is wet and fire is hot. No d'uh Sherlock.
That's not a rant saying they SHOULDN'T do better. It's a rant at a very inane phrase...'they could do better'. They COULD have done better with the Quarian faces, but then again, why spend resources on something only a few people would ever see? Resources that would be better served on other things.
As far as how the Quarians look...I always envisioned them as somewhat leonine. Especially with those wide spaced, almond shaped eyes. Frankly, I'm tired of humanoid aliens. It'd be nice if the next game company to start a game franchise actually hired a xenobiologist to design alien races from the bottom up.
Aliens don't exist.
And besides, how can you imagine them as leonine when you clearly see their humanoid facial structure in ME2?
Facial structure might have been humanoid but they could have still made it more alien, take the drell for one.
Also how do you know? Scientists today say otherwise... We havent even left our planet yet in great numbers so its really early and ignorant to throw claims like these as the ultimate truth.
Also for alien races that really look alien, except for a couple, you should try Star Control 2, Wolfva. Also the thing is the game has humanoid races for reason:
1. They need to be able to run besides you or against you and wield guns (unless theyre something like rachni)
2. The animation models are mostly based off of humanoid structure.
More "alien" aliens is nice and all, but they only work as npcs mostly. Someone you can talk to and thats it.

According to every single bit of lore we've ever been given, they look like people. In ME2 you can see the outlines of their faces. And in ME3 you get the picture, obviously. They look like humans, and that's all there is to it.

Will it happen? Nope.
Unless every Quarian mask is tinted purple just because, hey, purple... I kind of expected them to be, ya know, purple. I didn't ask for a space elf, but it really wouldn't have bothered me half as much as what we got. Or that they could have rendered her face in game at least twice and didn't.
But, dead horse, we're beating the **** out of it.

Batarians are an interesting example. Batarians clearly aren't supposed to be a potential race for LI so there is no need to make them look relatively human-like, but Bioware did change the look.

(batarian as seen BEFORE bring down the sky DLC was released in the codex)
This clearly doesn't have hair so Bioware went through at least a couple iterations before landing on the batarians we come to love to hate....

They could easily be LI race if turians and drells qualify.
Also batarian have hair but its soft and not noticable, like short horses hair.

Yeah but thats FEMALE shep LI. I seriously doubt a female batarian would be considered attractive if we're working off the basis of the original picture of them....
Probably... males seem to be that shallow it would never fly. I wonder if even female drell would pass.
Theres lots of fanart how female batarians might look like

Hell no.
See female turians.
Males want something that visually is similar to human females in appearance but this isn't just ME fans...as I mentioned before, take a look in any other space opera.
Farscape for example, the female "aliens" are all simply shades of female humans whereas the male characters at the least look different such as Dargo and Rygel. (Hell, maybe other farscape fans can tell me but did we ever meet a female member of Dargo or Rygel's people?)
The first picture I definitely can see males being attracted to but the seocnd one? Not enough noticeable physical difference between the male and female form...
But take the picutre I posted above with the elongated neck and decidely non-human loke facial structure...no way any female version of that would be considered attractive.

Yeah i guess its mostly true then, males go for looks, females go for personality and other qualities.
My maleshep might have gone with Nyreen tough if she was a well developed LI. Im not so shallow, even tough im male.

People telling me how asari and the general quarian doesn't look alien enough, I roll my eyes.
People telling me photoshop with glowy effects isn't alien enough, I tell em, "Damn straight, god awful job done."

Actually the bit about the Quarians looking like humans was often misquoted by fans who wanted Tali to look just like a human. In the book it was never stated that the Quarians look exactly like humans. The description of the unmasked Quarian was deliberately vague, and just noted that they had some humanoid features like an endoskeleton, lips, teeth, and two eyes with eyelids. Those are of course all features that are also shared by the Drell, a species no one would ever mistake for being human.

Imo, it isn't important what they look like under their suits anyway, as long as we don't see them without them.
Until there's some serious concept art for what the Quarians "really" look like, I think I'll just leave them in their suits and pretend I never saw anything.
