This is all very strange. It kept crashing on me (red blocks appearing, game freezing, then black screen) when I reached Ostegar, however I managed to move my party, re-save and for some bizzar reason no more crashes.
Or so I thought, I managed to clear Ostegar, Redcliff (inc side quests), I then started the mage circle part and was in the fade (got all the different forms and was about to kill my 3rd demon) and its started again, only worse this time. It loads up and within 5 seconds crashes as before.
Its weird that I was able to get hrs of bug free game play now this! What's more annoying is that I was getting hooked quickly and now my fix has been removed and I'm having to go cold turkey....

The red blocks are usually an indication of a video card problem, either bad video memory or a video card over heating. What kind of system are you using?

AMD Athlon 64 2.2GHz
4G Ram
nvidia 8800GT
Vista Ultimate 32
From what I've read on the forums though you hardware seems to make little difference on the crashing issues, i.e. peeps with 8G ram and twin 8800GT's still crashing

What nvidia driver are you running?
How hot is your 8800GT getting. I have 2 of these on one machine and I find that they will get too hot if I don't manually increase the fan speed. The 8800GT is notorius for running quite hot. They were a great card cost performance wise though.
Also have you manually updated your DirectX?
