Dark Souls is great, but sort of easy. Not sure why people say it's hard. Play a Sorcerer and farm 9000 thousand souls per minute, one shotting Sentinels with Soul Spear.
Well the fact that there is a way to go around the obstacle (specific builds, for example, like Sorcerer or Pyromancer with specific stats) does not invalidate the fact that Dark Souls is generally a very though experience and that the entire game it's built around the concept of dying a LOT to reach your goal.
I would not like a Dragon Age with this kind of structure, but Dark Souls also has one of the best melee combat I've ever seen in a fantasy game, at least when it comes to Warriors.
Actually I agree with Bionuts:
Dragon Age: Origins + Nightmare or Dragon's Dogma + Hard Mode.
You will die more times than you would ever die in several playthroughs of Dark Souls.
Unfortunately From Software got a crappy publisher hell-bent on presenting Dark Souls as the hardest game ever even when one of the developers said that was never what they were aiming for. Every time a Dark Souls developer speaks in an interview they mention only challange and rewarding the player for overcoming challenge and not holding their hand too. This "millions of deaths" tripe (seriously if you die more than a million times in DkS you've not only played for innumerable hours but you must be the worst gamer in the world) misrepresents the game and is a foolish statement by both the press and publisher.
At heart Dark Souls is a traditional RPG resurrected into an action-RPG. After Anor Londo you should not only have a fixed build by now but good and upgraded equipment. At this point you may die a few more times and encounter some challanges but it becomes like the RPG's of old where you're just wrecking everything.
The fact good builds makes the game easier does invalidate the claim. I mean if you built the wrong build in any traditional RPG you'd end up getting wrecked all the time but you don't hear anyone saying "Baldur's Gate will eat your heart, spit it out and eat it all over again" do you?
As it goes Dark Souls shines in everything else it does. It doesn't need this "hardest game ever" tripe to sell itself.
