I am just about to hit the collector ship with an adept Sheppard. Normally, at this point I go with sniper rifle training. I really like the Viper. But I just recently got the firepower pack and used the Mattock for my soldier Sheppard. I really, really liked that gun. But I am probably biased because it hits so hard when using adrenaline rush. As an adept, needless to say, adrenaline rush won't be available. So should I pick the Viper or the Mattock? What are your experiences?

Most people would probably say that the Mattock is best if you have time dilation, which is with Adrenaline Rush or Charge. Otherwise it is difficult to click to max ROF for the Mattock, and it won't be as ammo efficient as on Soldier.

I ended up going with the Viper. I decided the AP capability of the Viper was more suitable for what I use it for (big, hard to miss, armored targets like Scions, Preatoreons, YMIR mechs). Plus, I am not sure there is an appreciable difference in the ROF. Basically, the Viper fires as fast as I can pull the trigger, just like the Mattock. I was thinking the Mattock might be better for close in fights, but the ability to spray a target with an SMG seemed better suited for that.

Mattock's rated ROF is like 750, Viper is only 240. It is hard to click 12.5 times per second unless under time dilation.

Mattock all the way for solider's in ME2. What really limits the effectiveness of rapid-fire assault rifles in ME2 is the lack of Overkill and the ability to mod.

The difference btw the Mattock and Viper really shows up when using adrenaline rush. When not using AR, the Viper fires as fast as I can pull the trigger. But when I use AR all of the sudden I can no longer get the Viper to keep up wth my trigger finger, unlike the Mattock. But as an adept, engineer or sentinel, this difference is not noticeable.
