Buy the packs. As you unlock their character cards, you unlock their appearance options.

Depends. Have you unlocked all commons? If so, yes. You want to unlock common gear before going into the rare department.

If you haven't maxed out your basic and uncommon items, buying reserves packs is a waste of credits.

You'll save credits and get needed consumables such as ops, gels and rockets (no one like a bleeder).  Get those basic weapons to X buying recruit packs then move to veteran.  After a few of those move to spec and the other packs.  Best to mix them up because Spec packs give you more equipment.

I guess ill start doing that, although i have actually unlocked a decent amount of good characters/weapons by buying reserves/arsenals packs (which is what ive been buying 90% of the time)

I found that buying Recruit packs until I had maxed out my blues, then Veteran packs until I had maxed out my silvers, to be the way to go. After that, I do combos of Reserves/PSP/Arsenal packs, depending on where I am in levels, and how recently I have promoted.

Then again, I have been playing since day 1 and am *NOT* in the maxed manifest club, so what do I know.

Edited to add: Don't forget about getting the occasional Jumbo Equipment Pack.  JEPs are cruicial as you move above Veteran packs to keep your equipment up.

noob misconception. Most of the uncommon weapons, and the mantis, are better fully levelled than nearly every low level rare card, and arguably most of the URs as well. Furthermore, the best boosts you can get are the relatively-cheap-to-level-up common and uncommon weapon mods.

Mattock is arguably better than even a Valkyrie X, and you can unlock it with a significantly smaller time and credit investment.

Look, aruge if you want, I'm trying not to go full numbers/game mechanics at you since I can already tell you don't give a damn, but if you get me going I will take my lunch break. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about here.

Gear and mods, as well.  There is nothing more frustrating than spending 99K creds on a PSP and getting silvers (although I think they fixed that to gauruntee a couple of golds).

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you are, I just got into the MP about 2 months ago. Trust me, everyone telling you to buy recruit/veteran packs first know what they're talking about. When I first started, I to went straight for the PSP/AP/RP, and you don't get nearly enough consumables for your credits, especially since your just starting out so you're probably in dire need of consumables.

I adjusted my purchasing habits and started buying nothing but recruit packs to max out my common weapons/characters/mods. A good example of common weapons being useful at level X - An Avenger X can be used on power-reliant classes to keep 200% cooldown, instead of having to use, say, a Predator I to keep 200% cooldown. It only took me about 3-5 days of bronze/silver at most to max out my common stuff seeing as recruit packs only cost 5000 credits, and it will give you a much needed boost of medi-gel/ops/missiles/gear bonus' etc.

After that start buying nothing but veteran packs to max out your uncommon stuff. That takes a bit longer than maxing out your common stuff, but I finished my uncommon stuff about a week ago, it took about 1-2 weeks of silver/gold to max out my uncommon gear. For me, the biggest reason I wanted to upgrade my weapons wasn't for increased damage/shots but for better weight, allowing me to take stronger weapons on my power reliant classes.

Once you get into the spectre packs, remember to occasionally buy JEP's to top up on consumables. Please, please  don't be "that guy" that has 0 gel/ops/missiles and refuses to buy an equipment pack because "I'm 10k away from a PSP and I have to have  *insert character/weapon here* "
