After playing the Citadel DLC one of the main things that stuck out for me was the piano piece Liara playes during her romance scene. It turns out to be the Vigil theme played on piano by the Mass Effect composer Sam Hulick. I took to transcribing it to guitar tabliture and it has just been approved by ultimateguitar.com. Go check it out, its not that hard to play and I'm pretty sure it's accurate. Comment for any feedback.

Origional piece:

P.s This is my first time writing tab so sorry for the jankiness.

Firstly, I'm pretty sure that the F? chord in the tab is a CM11 (C Maj 11th), since it's a CM7 (open 'B' string) with an 'F' at the top - an 11th (or 4th.. but I think, yeah it's an 11th - being above the 7th, tonally...  or something like that).   Yep - C Maj 11th - that's my contribution, lol.  The lengthier 'F' designation- it's also an FM#11sus2/C, - but that is kind'a awkward  (, even if it weren't so convoluted, it'd be awkward given the song's key ;-)    I just happened to have been reviewing my chord theory this week, or I would have drawn a total blank, I'm pretty sure. .  I rarely have such an answer available to me, heh.

IT IS VERY COOL THAT YOU TOOK THE TIME TO DO THIS! :-)   Apologies for the theory, especially since I'm actually quite lame at theory... like I said, I was just refreshing this stuff...  and had to walk myself to the edge of my theory knowledge --- I'm all out now ;-)

I will play with this later today/tonight.  It's a bizarre coincedence for me --- I was _JUST_ playing the Invite_Liara_Up sequence (Citadel DLC) minutes earlier, having upgraded with Collector's Pack DLC.  I admit, with a little embarrassment, that I wanted the "Liara Tiara" (more embarassment that I named it that)...  I know, most people think it's kind'a lame (headband/thing)... but I really think that our Li'l "Blue Angel" pulls it off - nicely even - what can I say?)

Anyway - shortly after playing through the piano/"what are you doing"/, I was just waiting for my dog to finish her breakfast (have to take her outside _quickly_ when she's done... iykwim.... wish I could get her a doggie enviro (Quarian) suit for it's mass-effect pooper-scooper abilities ;-)   so -- while waiting, I grabbed a guitar off the wall to get in a lick or two, and realized Liara's tune was still "in my head" ... sort of...  so I started trying to play it - and decided I was going to go back and take the time to basically do what you've done.  I was close, considering it was from memory -- but I was playing it in 'D'...  and -- I wasn't that close-- I'll try it out asap though.

Cheers!

Nice one aprilia on the theory. I was going through the F chord thinking it must be some kind of inversion or something. Just sounded off but yea, I'm crap at chord theory. Spent too much time going twiddly diddly diddly beeowng and learning modes and scales.

"Use thumb for F note"?! Tsk. Unless you're playing loose 'rock', do it properly; you'll be thankful in long run when you want to expand your techniques. But good job, SaintZ. :)

I agree on the thumb -- it's a barre chord.  Of course, SRV,
Satriani and Eric Johnson all known to put the left thumb down on the
f/b from time to time.... probably that "loose" thing ;-)

I checked it out a bit more.   I think the tab is good - the notes/placement near spot on at second glance.
The chord labeled as C? is really a Gm9 chord.  So no more C? or F?.
The notes in the tab are fine, just talking about the chord name -
although the 'C' note on 'A' string is suspect, i.e. I might play it as
the 5th ('D'), but even if you play it as written, it just adds a
4th/11th but the basic tonality, or feel, is that Gm chord..
** Edit: The 'C' works better, turns out..  timed with the 'A' in the melody line, then  to 'D' with the 'Bb' of melody -
the "high part")   Just to clarify - truth is, it's cool to have the option of guitar - but this tune really cries out for
the Piano/Keyboard-Synth.  Really shines as done in ME ;-)

IMHO,
this began as an "improv" piece - I'm convinced that is how it was
originally composed, though the melody notes become "written in stone", a
few or more are "in a vein", gracefully dancing around the chords..
just my gut feeling..  like the slow back/forth at the end -- it's just a
C to Gm and back (with melody toss in C11/13 and Gm9, etc.. but ..  the
basic progression...., the "escort" for the melody, is the C to Gm
back-to C, then C to Gm to F.... and back-to C.   The second time "pulls
the trigger" - going to the F with the raised energy in the melody,
then releasing the tension.  Hauntingly beautiful.   Really beautiful.
Just 3 chords and a single-note line to dress them up as m9, M11,
etc...  plus the tones - like the original synth/organ, evoking the feel
of longing...  longing for "the days of ME1"
(and for some of us - longing for the company of an achingly beautiful
Asari girl named Liara
)

Aren't wordy tonight?   So, overall, I think the chord progression should just read (remembering the melody line adorns the C with 11th then 13th, could be mentioned in text or just spelled out)

C to Gm (2x), then  C to Gm9 to F

Hopefully
I've not made it more convoluted.  Takes care of the C? and F? anyway,
and the tab/notation takes care of the melody and the chordal
adornment.  THANKS AGAIN FOR THIS -- FOR FIRST TIME IT'S.. COULD'A
FOOLED ME.

(on longing for a vidgame character -  all I can say is "damn those ultra-talented artists/designers, writers ... and voice actors too... ;-)

They usually only do the thumb thing for blues bends, as it provides a more stable pivot for vibrato, not so much on straight chord playing.  But classic loose and dirty rhythm guitarists such as Lennon, use it to their advantage.
