Well I'v been watching a few vids from gamespot where they showed ME2 at the CES... a fair bit of combat video.

But my god... when Sheperd is wounded and the screen is flooded with these horribly cheesy looking cartoon veins along the sides just about murdered the immersion.

Really? What designer in the art department felt this absurd effect fitted with the rest of the art design of the game? It looks horrendously out of place... in the same way it would be if a World of Warcraft gnome just suddenly popped out from behind a crate and started firing at Sheperd (hilarious as that may be).

My god they did it right with Dragon Age... so simple and to the point.... the edges of the screen slowly flash a bit red and your character makes exhausted sounds... it achieves the effect of letting you know "Hey dummy! Your character is hurt! Do something!". It does this without flooding our monitor with some stupid cheesy graphic effect.

Couldn't they just cut and paste this simple yet effective device from Dragon Age rather than the goddamn cartoon lame gothic vein crap?

GRRR. It's a small thing but it really boils my ******.

Yes its bad, but its too late.

You're just going to have to deal with it.

I agree. It's certainly not aesthetically pleasing. I'm hoping there will be an option to turn it off. If not, I'm sure I can get used to it.

They had the same idea in ME1, but according to the developers they felt that it was too subtle. So I guess they ramped it up for ME2. Go figure. Since none of us have played it yet, we don't know how good/bad it is. I'm more concerned about the 'regenerative health' thing they've introduced to replace medigel. I liked the medigel from ME1, you could use it to heal but you couldn't really spam it (unless you had medicine as a skill and kept Kaidan in your team and both of you maxed medicine out).

Of course, the game being what it is, if you found yourself in the position where you needed to spam medigel constantly to stave off dying and reloading, you were playing the game wrong in my opinion.

What concerns me is that it doesn't make any sense. The camera is third person. What we should have gotten is blood splatters on the screen that get larger the more you get hurt, until you're almost dead and the screen fades to black and white and the sound gets fuzzy. The veins look awful.

Hopefully we'll be able to replace them on the PC version with some careful replacement of files?

Here's to hoping the final product will be more subtle. Say, something along the lines of the effect used in Far Cry 2.

Game went gold a while ago, that is the final product.

I don't mind it, at least it's not as bad as the blood jelly that floods your screen in modern warfare 2.

Seriously though their always about to die in every gameplay video because their trying to show stuff off.  I know for sure that once my shields drop I almost never take damage because I take cover.  So I won't be seeing the veins much and when I do I'm probably ovewhelmed and going to die so it's fitting.

If it was a first person game it might make a little more sense (although I still wouldnt be a huge fan of it) but its not so like you say, it doesnt fit in at all. Guess I now have extra incentive not to get shot. :P

Don't worry, it'll be modded away on the PC version very fast after release. If I get to do it myself, I'll post a link.

It doesn't that prominent unless you are really close to biting the bucket. I died a lot in ME1 because I wasn't aware that I was about to die. I think this works better.

I don't think it's bad, so here's one person who doesn't hate it. So it's hardly 'nobody likes it'. ;) It's a lot better than having a flashing data on the bottom left of the screen that is easy to miss, anyway.

I'm sure there's other ways it could've been done, but nevertheless. It's not something to freak out over.

It's not that bad. Personally, I liked the E3 build where things turned red and you heard a robot voice be all like, "Careful!" better. But this works too. =]

I don't hate it either. They could have made it a bit more subtle, though.

It makes me cringe when I see it in gameplay vids. In fact it kinda turns me off playing on the higher difficulty levels. That way at least I "won't get shot" as was the suggested solution.

If it really bothers you that much, wait a few weeks until some fans modded the textures. Could have been worse anyways.

If you watch this Polish gameplay vid you will see them pop up twice. The first time is horrendous and the second time is bearable because its less damage. If the second one would have been the highest it went I would have been ok with it.

It gets your attention doesn't it? I'd call that a job well done.

I for one won't be playing like a cover-avoiding idiot, so I won't be seeing it often.
