Targets: missile or not?

I got the idea that one should missile at least the first target from something I read on the forum. Reason is, doing so fast might switch targets. Indeed, last night the first target was a banshee and then the others were simpler ones like marauders (not sure, of course, if this was due to my missiling the first?)
The advice was good, though -- I tend to run through missiles too quickly (don't have much of a reserve). Any opinions on this from others -- rules you use and such?

On wave 6, if it's not versus Reapers, all the targets get a missile except the last one.
On wave 10, everything gets missile'd. Everything.
It also depends on who I'm playing with.

Rocket kill streaks during normal waves are lame though (unless geth)

Can someone explain to the noob what this target switching thing means?
You can get the target to switch type on wave 3 assassination missions by nuking the first one really quickly... Prime spawns as the target and you nuke it, it'll switch to Bombers for the remaining targets (Atlas to Dragoons and so on). IF you're fast enough with the missile.

The target is oftentimes one of the more 'expensive' units in the wave budget (eg, banshee/brute), but rocketing the first, you can get the target to switch to a 'cheaper' unit (husk/cannibal/maurader) who are much easier & faster to kill.
What I'm not clear on is why it seems to work better if you get a killstreak and nuke the entire spawn.
Lol,

Just as the name implies -- switches target types (from, e.g., a banshee to something simpler like a marauder). Don't know if it's a for real thing or ME3 legend!

Targets and objectives are pretty much fire at will mode as long as it helps the team.

Late Reaper spawns look so pretty and BIG though. How can you not want to missile one of those?

I don't think it actually has anything to do with how fast you nuke the first one (at least not directly). I'm pretty sure that what actually matters is how many other enemies you take with it. If you just hit the big enemy (e.g. a Prime) and maybe one other enemy, another Prime will spawn. If you hit the Prime with a bunch of other enemies, they will all respawn together. Because of some wave budget magic I don't understand, causing so many enemies to spawn at once will prevent another Prime from spawning.Chealec wrote...

Hitting the Prime shortly after spawning is the best way to do this, because the other enemies that spawned with it don't get a chance to disperse.

This doesn't usually work on Platinum. On gold, yes.Jaded4Chaos wrote...
Go for it to switch targets. Will make the remaining targets die much quicker. I tend to F it up though

That's probably a more accurate answer yeah
Also why it works best on wave 3 - lower overall budget than on say 6 or 10 so you'll exhaust more of it by nuking fast (before dispersal) and nuking hard!

Yeah it's about what is killed at the same time. Doesn't even have to be by that missile. I've had it switch to something else that a friend killed that wasn't in the spawn.Miniditka77 wrote...

There is budget restrictions on some waves like Collectors wave three gold. You will get three Praetorians max that wave regardless. You can change the target type to something easier or just carve through those three and then kill the trooper or possessed trooper at the end. Assisination targets under a certain budget number also get progressively higher DR as target number increases. Like the fourth trooper on Gold has 90% DR, I believe.

Well it certainly involves a lot grunting.

Nuke if target #1, wave 3 gold and it looks like you can take down a bunch of others, otherwise don't bother (especially if plat), unless, of course, it's chaos all around and that's the easiest way to get the target.
