Is it just me, or is this game really hard? As a Baldur's Gate veteran, and having beaten every ME game on Insane (although admittedly that was quite easy), I figured Dragon Age wouldn't be too much of a hassle... I created a Rogue and turned the difficulty to Hard, but I am having serious problems. I have considered lowering the difficulty level, but I really don't like the idea of friendly fire damage being reduced.

Melee-centric fights are typically easy - my party have enough CC to keep the "yellows" from interfering too much as I take down the lackeys first. The real problems are archers. Often I find myself battling a group of bad guys in melee with archers raining down arrows on us without any place to take cover or otherwise control them. So advice on battling archers are VERY appreciated! Currently my party consists of Rogue (myself) dualwielding, Sten, Morrigan and the Wardog. I've tried using Alistair against archers but he gets slaughtered just as fast as Sten does.

I'm thinking I might be playing the game wrong...there are very few fights that I actually can't beat, but typically someone dies and I HATE partymembers dying! I also don't like having to rely on Healing Potions, but I haven't found anyone that can heal yet.

So I'd like to ask you people here how you play the game:
Do you use lots of healing potions and injury kits? What difficulty do you play on? Do you use Tactics?

I should also mention that my rogue keeps getting detected in stealth by pretty much every "yellow" creature, and in one of the world encounters he couldn't disarm a single trap and there was one chest he couldn't open which is really boring. He has 2 slots in Lockpicking and 25 Cunning...and I can't get a new slot until level 12 I think so how is that fair?

The game should be done in a certain order,
let me guess, you are in denirim or haven ?

Instead, go to redcliffe, mage tower, and then brecilian forrest.
If you have stone prisoner & warden keep DLC even better, go there ASAP

Quite a few of the boxes require 3 or 4, and most of them contain an elf root worth 3 copper.

here is a mod that helps with the leveling struggle, you will not ever make it to lv 25 without

For archers you can break line of sight and pull them or pull the melee fighter as well away from archers. Also you can teach Morrigan a heal when she levels up. Lastly their numerous guides to help in the classes and build section for dragon age origins but I would mainly consider reading the spoiler-free newbie guide for it.

No the game isn't really hard except on nightmare .
Shrugs.
The tc needs to provide more info on his setup.

It felt pretty challenging to me the first time, so it's definitely not just you. Archers are really pesky, especially once they gain access to Scattershot and start appearing in groups. There are a lot of ways of tackling archers depending on party setup, and level, many of which you'll figure out yourself in due course as you get familiar with the various abilities available across classes.

Your rogue can sneak up behind them while the tank takes point or unleash your own scattershot before they can, warriors can rush close to them and use AoEs to keep them off their feet, mages can use sleep, waking nightmare, paralysis explosion, walking bombs, the primal AoEs, et al. Lots of options, but the general rule I follow is to split up and take them out first. At higher levels, archers are not much of a concern, only a bit annoying at best. As for Alistair and tanks in general, they are vulnerable initially, but are near immortal by endgame. Just carry on, use stuff like Shield Wall, Indomitable, prioritize healing on them, stuff like that, and you'll be cool.

You'd probably like to hit the Circle Tower asap as you'll get dedicated healing options there. As Keeneaow mentioned, for a more seamless level scaling (also for that lockpicking-trap disarming thingy), you might consider following a particular order of questlines - Circle Tower, Redcliffe, Brecilian Forest, Haven, Orzammar/Denerim, so on so forth. Also, most of the locked chests that are awkwardly placed, i.e. require higher level of lockpicking/more cunning remain accessible throughout; you can pick them up at a later point if you so desire.

As for your other query, I've been playing on Nightmare and use tactics extensively. I don't use health poultices, lyrium potions, or injury kits. Apparently, the game becomes quite easy once you've been through it a couple of times and start pumping out power DPSers.

PS: Ditch 'Dog' for someone else, he's cool as an experimental team member, but may be you'll want your life a bit easier the first time around, yes?

It is quite possible to reach level 25 with all DLCs; and I don't mean using glitches.

But I love dogs...actually I love animals in general, and having my own pet party member is alot of fun! I love all the different interactions they wrote for him! And he's got powerful abilities. Still, I see your point. I had actually considered replacing him as soon as found a more interesting party member...problem is, I haven't found one. :P

Anyway, thanks for the detailed reply, Blazomancer. It has cleared up some things. I've spent the last days reading guides and information, and I'd like to think that I understand the game mechanics alot better for it. It's just a shame, because, such information should've already been in the manual, methinks. Either way, thanks all!

PS: I've had the most success when pausing extensively and micromanaging all aspects of the fight, Baldur's Gate-style. But it's simply not fun to do this in Dragon Age...Dragon Age's combat is so cool and intense I feel it takes the fun out of it to pause...I'd prefer just managing my own character and let the tactics handle the rest. Except for AoE spells and other complicated abilties, ofc.
