Straight people aren't forbidden to go to GaymerX, it's just a convention dedicated to talk about all sorts of gay stuff in games...and when there are people who made threads like "can we have a gay toggle", it really shows that such an event is needed.

So that people can ask the same question at the event itself, of course. :innocent:

Though you'd have to be a special kind of stupid to try, considering how vastly outnumbered you'd be.

I don't recall anyone ever saying that only Gay people could attend the gaymer convention.

Well, I wasn't speaking hypothetically, actually...

I don't want to be too derisive because I imagine they want to be respectful toward audience members they meet in person, but it certainly seemed to make him squirm a bit, heh.

I don't see what the issue is. Create a great game and people will want to play it. It's already been stated that LIs will be player-sexual so hit on who you want, play how you want and leave your sexuality at the door. I've both straight and gay/lesbian friends and I assure you that their sexuality is not the identifier they greet you with. I certainly don't introduce myself using my gender/sexual preference as a hash tag. I'd like to think that if DA:I is as inclusive as the last game was everyone will be happy with the options. Whether I find anyone worth my time is another matter but I'll just have to wait and see. I'll give a hint: neither Cassandra, Vivienne nor Varric is doing it so far.

I understand, varric  but you decided  about Cassandra  from  a few scenes she was  in the second game and one  movie and Vivienne   from the little information that we have

Basically an option to hide "gay content" (read it as: "male NPCs hitting on my MANLY dudebro character")

David Gaider (who was awesome in this event), adressed this question in the "How to make romances" panel

that is very easy to say as a straight woman. And of course the first thing about someone is not their sexual identity, but the fact is people are making great games but excluding minorities, Bioware is one of the few companies that are inclusive which is why they got a whole panel. But conventions are about all games, and most games just don't allow for such things, or even have very hostile atmospheres. In fact many gamer conventions if any one brought up their worries about it, or even were out, they would often be treated poorly. Gaming conventions would not be kind to a transwoman or a obvious gay guy. Especially the big ones are not always the best place for women either, much less those of the Queer community. Gaymerz is a safe atmosphere where people can bring up Queer concerns without straight people ,who it doesn't effect, telling them it doesn't matter, which is very similiar to telling a doctor they aren't needed because your legs are fine while the person next to you has a broken leg. The issue in gaming isn't a problem for some people, mostly straight White people, but that doesn't mean it isn't still a problem.

In total I've seen three of those talks. One has already been mentioned.

"Meet BioWare" - GaymerX BioWare Panel.

"Creating Games In Romances" - GaymerX BioWare Panel.

"Fan Feedback" - GaymerX BioWare Panel.

Edit: Found a fourth:

"Why We Think It Is Important To Create More LGBT Inclusive Games" - GamerX EA Panel.

It doesn't matter whether you are gay or not, it's just worth to watch.

I don't mind the idea of having a gay toggle, as long as we get a straight toggle as well.

Wouldn't selecting sexuality in the character creator essentially remove the problem? So anders wouldn't hit on my lesbian hawke and isabela wouldn't hit on my gay hawke.

David addressed that in one of the panels, actually.

He said a sexuality option in the character creator would feel awkward and inorganic.

IMO, the point of the romances is that they're optional - the player initiates them. Other characters hitting on your PC because they think they could be available isn't something the player should be able to control. Why would choosing the "gay" option for Hawke lead to Isabela not hitting on them? Does the character walk around with a giant sign above their head all the time, or something?

He also mentioned that the game contained some pretty mature and disturbing themes as it is (slavery, mass murder, ultraviolence) and that a toggle to remove certain romance content simply wasn't something they're going to consider.

Why would a sexuality option in the character creator be any more, umm, 'inorganic' than a race or gender option in the same?

I appreciate that, but if it'll stop people complaining then in my opinion it would be worth it. I grew so bored of those 'anders hit on my hawke ew ew ew' threads in te da2 days; I would not like to see a repeat in inquisition if possible.

The only thing that bothers me about anders  is his reaction when I told him I'm sorry, I'm not interested

But that reaction was the same if hawke was female, an yet people seem to focus on the male hawke version of it.

Because sexuality is something that you figure out, not something that's hardcoded and immediatly spottable, like say....gender or race

And are selectable backgrounds hard coded and immediately spottable?

No, yet they were present in me1, DA:o and were going to be in DAI

You'd have to ask David, he's mentioned feeling uncomfortable with the idea before.

Clearly, it isn't something they're going to do.

I have a couple of RL friends who happen to be transgender. They told me that they've heard that BW had a positive stance towards the LBGT community. BTW, they are not gamers. A transgender friend on my FL knows better. She was really insulted by the way BW handled that group. So I had to explain to my RL friends, that this may be true for the LBG part of that abbreviation, but that they were very negatively portraying the transgender part. Today I saw in one of the GamerX talks David Gaider stating that he too was made aware of the issue and he apologized for making fun of transgenders and portraying them as prostitutes in two BW games. It's cool that this is happening. Jessica Merizan also seems to understand that male/female is not a binary issue anymore. It's cool that the company has people like these who want to keep an eye on issues like that.

Backgrounds determines what NPCs knows you before the proper events of the game, but your sexuality is something that no one knows the first thing about if you don't talk about it...being someone's cousin is something known by people other than you, sexuality can be totally secret.
