Ok, I'm going to come right out and say it: I SUCK at first person shooters. I suck at them. It's ironic, because in real life I'm actually a very good shot, but I've never been good at FPS video games. It's one of the reasons I've like RPGs. The character's ability to kick ass has nothing to do with my ability to swivel a joystick, it's all about the CHARACTER's skills that you build up.

That said, the instant Mass Effect came out, I bought that b*tch like it was no tomorrow, because I'm a huge Bioware fan and I was promised that it was basically an RPG with a few simple FPS elements. You could even set the gameplay so that your ability to swivel joysticks was less important (auto-aim or something, iirc).

However (SHAME SHAME SHAME) I never have been able to get through the game. I have tried twice. I can always get through the prologue, barely shaking off husks and shooting them in time and always taking serious damage, and then I'm cool on the Citadel, but the moment I head off into space and all the different worlds, the whole damn thing collapses. I am incapable. I suck royally. ESPECIALLY with anything involving the Mako. If I'm in the Mako, you might as well just paint a big red bullseye on me because there is no way I'm going to be able to successfully a) kill people and B) not die while in the Mako.  Auto-aim doens't seem to do what was promised, because I seem 100% unable to hit the broadside of a barn, on casual, with auto-aim.

Both times I tried to play as a soldier, since usually that's the easiest class to just tank through stuff. I don't have a PC capable of running games as complex as ME, so I have the XBox 360 version.

So (SHAME SHAME SHAME) does anyone have any tips, hints or advice? I really want to play this trilogy, I've heard such awesome things about it, but aaaaaaaaaaaaargh.  Is it just hopeless? Should I just give up and accept the fact that I'm so completely uncoordinated that ME will never be a possibility in my life? :(

Not surprising you cannot hit anything with weapons that early in the game. Gun accuracy is terrible and relies heavily on gun stats and mods. Assault Rifle is hit especially hard, as no Assault Rifle has an accuracy above 1 until level IV, which start to drop when you hit level 20 or so.

You can crouch (click the Right Thumbstick) to improve accuracy and recoil.

As for the Mako: some people love it, some people hate it. I can handle it just fine, but other people seem to be completely terribly with it.

When shooting with the Mako, the the Right Trigger (LT) shoots the minigun, while the Right Bumper (RB) shoots the cannon. The cannon has a refire delay, so you cannot use it for a few seconds while it recharges.

While in the Mako--when not zoomed in, you cannot fire at anything that is below the height of the gun. If you zoom in (click the Right Thumbstick), you can hit what is in the zoom. You can zoom up to two times in the Mako.

Note that killing enemies in the Mako has something like a 50% XP penalty. That means that you earn less XP from killing enemies with the Mako as opposged to killing the same enemies while on foot. A very stupid design decision; I have no idea why BioWare gave you a tank for specific portions of missions, then punish you for using it.

As a Soldier, you are best to use your Pistol and Shotgun early since they are hit by accuracy penalties the least.

As a Soldier early game, you are best to invest in Combat Armor up to rank 7 to unlock Heavy Armor, Fitness for the Immunity talent to decrease damage taken, and the Soldier passive to increase health regeneration. Putting 3 points into Pistols also helps for Marksman to increase you damage and reduce recoil/accuracy degradation when shooting. Once you get better weapons, you can start to hit stuff a lot more.

You can jump in the Mako by pressing and holding A. This will allow you to jump over some stuff like Thresher Maw acid spit. Do not be afraid to run over enemies in the Mako.

You may want to heavily invest in Kaidan's Electronics and Decryption skills (up to rank 9) so you can unlock all hackable objects for better weapons, mods, and armor. Unfortunately, this is at the expense of his biotics, which are good for disabling enemies. Once you recruit Liara, she can take over biotic duties. Lift and Singularity are the best abilities for disabling enemies, but they require that you put other points into them first.

Without sitting next to you I cannot really help you with much more than that. Also, check out the ME1 and ME2 Builds and Strategy section, and check out the "List of guides on the Forum" thread in that section; it contains links to some threads that you may find useful.

For any more specific help, please identify any particular missions or fights you are having trouble completing. The final fight on Therum (where you recruit Liara) can be notoriously difficult for new players.

Be sure to check your inventory after every fight (click Start and then click Inventory) to see if you picked up any new stuff; you will get a popup screen of any new items you acquired in the fight. Be sure to equip any weapons, armor, and mods that are better than the items you currently use.

Also, be sure to level up your character as you progress through the game.

Would it be better to try a different class on my first runthrough? Usually I choose "warrior" tank types because they are the easiest and least complex, but maybe for ME a different type would work better if it's less dependent on having awesome and highly upgraded guns.

And thanks for all your suggestions! I will definitely try to follow those strategies re: point allotment when I try again. The one issue I've always had with RPGs is that when you're brand new at a particular game, a lot of times you're still working out what you should be dumping your points into depending on class/level, and early in the game (right when you're at your most vulnerable), dumping your points into all the wrong things can be a death knell.

Soldier is probably hit the hardest early game, since it relies a lot on weapons and damage reduction (armor + Immunity), but cannot get good very good at either until later in the game.

The Sentinel may be one of the easier classes early game since you can put points into a bunch of powers right at the start (about 4-6), even though cooldowns are punishing early.

The Vanguard and Infiltrator and considered the best classes in the game since they get some of the best biotic, tech, and combat abilities in the game.

Adept may also be a good class early although I cannot recall off the top of my head which abilities you can use right away.

Stay away from the Engineer on your first playthrough. It is considered the weakest class in ME1. Tech powers tend to be situational and it lacks a good defensive ability like Barrier or Immunity.

I agree with your assessment about being new to games/RPGs. Point allotment is critical early game in ME1, although by the end of the game you will have a lot of points and it can be difficult to get a bad build.

Here is the link to the List of Strategy Guides Found on the Forum, which is a link to a bunch of threads about ME1 and ME2 that you may find useful.

These are the topics you may find most useful:

[Mass Effect 1] Start of the Journey: Single Playthrough Builds. A guide to single-playthrough builds (level 50) for ME1. In Mass Effect 1, you are restricted to level 50 on your first playthrough. This gives some build advice. NOTE: This is mentioned in the topic, but the builds include a bonus power. Bonus powers are unlocked by using a power 75 times (Shepard's power only) or by killing 150 enemies with a particular weapon. For first playthroughs, just ignore the bonus power and put those points into another ability.

I think the link to the Mass Effect 1 Talent Calculator in the above thread is broken. Here is a working link to the Mass Effect 1 Talent Calculator.

General advice and builds. Some good tips and general build advice for a new player.

Thanks! I'm definitely gonna take all this advice, build me a new Shep, and see if I can actually play this game. ;)

Seriously though, I really appreciate your thoughtful and thorough response. When I first started playing this game several years ago and posted a question about having difficulties with the FPS aspects on these forums, the basic reaction was "lolz stupid thing can't play video games" (NVM that I've been playing video games since before most of them were born!) So I REALLY appreciate your posts!
