I was going to post this in the Technical Support forum, but that is read only now, and I didn't know where else to post this or locate this information. I've googled and found some information on this, but nothing that's exactly what I'm looking for.

I think I may have to uninstall and then reinstall DA:O Ultimate Edition. I booted the game up today on my gaming laptop after months of not touching it, and it's extremely slow (I have a 680M, so it should definitely run full speed at max settings, and it did last time I played). I tried shutting down and rebooting my computer and exiting and re-starting the game, but nothing seems to work.

If I need to un/reinstall, how can I preserve all my character saves and mods? Or, is there something else that I can maybe do to fix the slowness without having to un/reinstall?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Make a backup of the Characters and the Override folder, and sync them back after reinstalling. You'll need the dazip packages for the mods that came packaged as such. Either download them again or reinstall if you have them backed up elsewhere.

Are you sure your cpu is not overheating and throttling down? I'm asking this because I've experienced something similar myself. Being a relatively CPU-intensive game, it can be a big performance hit. The thermal compound can dry up with time, especially in laptops used for heavy gaming, which might explain the fact that you ran the game maxed out before. Just a thought, it might be a different issue altogether. You could hit up Answer HQ, and ask for help there. You'll find the link above.

Also check how much of a swap file you have,
you will want a few free GB on your C disk, and a defrag may well be warranted

Thanks guys!

How about mods that I installed using DAModder? Where are those? For instance, I installed the Qwinn's Fixpack, Party Camp Storage Chest, and Open Lock Spells, but I don't see those in the Override folder.

Will all the items I saved in the Party Came Storage Chest be there after uninstalling/reinstalling? I'm concerned about that..

Those are the dazip files as I said, you'll need to download them again if you removed them after installing. As far as I know, these are installed in the AddIns folder or something, but I don't know if they can be copied back and forth across installations, as I have no modding experience. I've been doing fresh reinstalls via Mod managers for these mods in particular. May be some modder can help out regarding this.

I've recently reinstalled Origins and the stuff I stashed in the camp storage chest are all present there. So, you're good to go on that one.

Thanks again.

Well I just reinstalled the game, and the problem persists. I'm wondering if it may be a throttling issue. It puzzles me because I haven't even used this laptop that much.

What can I do to confirm if it's a cpu throttling issue and remedy it if it is?

Monitor the temperatures using something like Real Temp, while running the game.

On my laptop its very convenient to take out 3 little screws on the backside
at the air inlet, brush away dirt, put it all back.
A friend also have a laptop, but i couldnt get this thing apart for cleaning it.
I typically need to clean the air inlet once every 6 month,
or computer will crash during hard work.

Ok, so I don't think it's a CPU overheating issue. I took a look inside, and there was hardly any dust (which makes sense, I keep the laptop covered when not in use). But I did vacuum out the small amount that was in there. I booted up Dragon Age, and my CPU usage never went above like 25% (I have a 3610QM) and in HWINFO64, it said that all 4 cores never went above 2.1 MHz and the ThermMom said "OK" for all of them. Yet, the game still is playing quite slowly (much slower than it did before, out of nowhere), and I have no idea why.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I may try next (I already reinstalled the game and I think I've confirmed it's not a CPU overheating issue)? Thanks again?

Well, I had to do a fresh install of Windows 7 (and DA, again), at the suggestion of the place I bought my laptop from...and after having to manually re-install some of my DLC, the game is once again running smooth as butter on max settings (including JB3 textures mod). Not sure what was causing the problem, but glad it's running perfectly again.
