Really??? ME is Shep and Shep is ME - it's like taking Neo out of Matrix or James out of 007 - leave us be and let us play with out the tear jerking ending. Live and let live. ME is epic.

I thought it was like taking Kirk out of Star Trek.

Speaking of Halo, I enjoyed playing as Rookie and Noble 6 more than I did playing as MC.

Well, it's like saying Captain Kirk isn't Star Trek, or Master Chief isn't Halo, sure, they're not vital but they are a big reason the series that revolved around them has been succesful.

Kirk and Master Chief are fully formed characters, Shepard is an avatar for the player with only some aspects pre-defined. There's only 1 Kirk and Master Chief while there's thousands of different versions of Shepard. Big difference

I don't think that Shepard being an avatar makes a lot of difference. I could be wrong on this but a lot of people go for the default look, there are 2 voices, male or female, and while paragon and renegade are very different, it's still the commander trying to save the universe. The whole series revolves around Shepard and his/her crew.

If you would ask anyone who has played Mass Effect to name 3 things they associate with the series, I would wager the first thing they'd say would be Shepard.

MASS EFFECT 4 Teaser Trailer should be this..........

The screen is dark and all the viewer can hear is heavy breathing then all of a sudden two eyes open on screen hazy, foggy, as if in a daze. The eyes look around and the viewer sees that they are being held captive somewhere unknown. Then when everything seems quite we hear Harbinger's iconic voice say "Shepard" then the screen fades back to black and a lone title comes across our screens that says 4.

Don't know about u guys but I would pee in my pants and scream like a little b i a t c h if that happened lol.

If that would mean Shepard's back, that would be so cool. And I do believe, as you said,  that whatever they come up with without Shepard will be mediocre, sales wise.
An older thread on 'Should Shepard be back' had a lot of people agreeing, but that was a year ago.

It will take a long time for me to get used to another protagonist in a mass effect game, simply because for me shepard and his crew are Mass Effect. I simply can't really imagine to play a Mass Effect game without Shep, his squad and The Normandy.

I think it's time for a new story in the mass effect universe.

Someone new that has an interesting lifestory, interesting new friends and enemies and rivals. And preferably different from Shepard.

It doesn't even have to be a hero(can be, doesn't really matter imo), a hero saved the galaxy, now let us live in it!

The tagline for the future Mass Effect MMO hahah

They've already said Shepard is done, but, not going to lie, I'd be ecstatic if they took that back. I'm not sure if there's even a way to pull that off well, but I just adore the crew from ME1-ME3. However, I'm also optimistic about where they decide to go with a clean slate. It will be weird having a new PC and characters, but I would be happy to fall in love with the franchise all over again.

We'll see. Hopefully we'll get more information on the upcoming Mass Effect for debate fodder. Right now, it's hard to form a defined opinion without knowing anything.

Well, in that case you would lost quite often because of all fans of Miranda and Tali and minimally one Harbinger.

It will certainly feel different and take some getting used to.
Shepard and the rest of the Normandy crew are like the cast of some favorite show, who's adventures we've all followed over the last 5 years - and now it's suddenly a clean slate, the show carries on but with a completely different cast after a rather crappy "season 5" finale (AKA ME3's ending).

@OP: thanks for that link!
Those tribute videos are very nice and managed to capture some of the greatest moments of the ME series - here's to hoping that whatever game comes next, they'll manage to keep making moments like those.

One strong reason why I think Shepard should be back is because his squad should be back (and by extension, the people who did the great voice acting as well). It's not just hard leaving Shepard in Mass Effect, but everything else too. I don't care what kind of "send off" you try, like with Citadel DLC or anything. Some of these characters are iconic and timeless. It's like killing off the Justice League. Totally unnecessary. They are not "trilogy" material. They're "serial" material imo.

QFT

The problem I have with this is that the more exposure each character got the more butchered the writing of them became. Each character varies, but none of them had well written character arc's, imo.

So did I.

Anyway, let the Shepard character end with the trilogy. Shepard's story is over. There is nothing left for Shepard to do. I really don't understand this obsession (particularly with Shepard, the Warden and Hawke) with bringing them back for a new game. Let some new character(s) take the stage. You might end up liking them. You just might end up liking them more.

It's not over unless you took the space jesus route.

It's not over for the Normandy crew either (who seem to have a lot ahead of them in just trying to get back home), it's not over for any scenario involving Krogan expansion, not necessarily over for high EMS Shep, not over for LI's not on the Normandy (i.e. Jack and Miranda), who seem to have become depressed widows staring up in the sky, in the EC epilogues. Is Jack going to become Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights? That won't be pretty. There is room for more stories at least. And some, like myself, aren't good at writing fiction to fill in the blanks for ourselves. This whole "speculations for everyone" idea is only good for other writers. I think it sucks that the writers expect all of us to be writers now. I have no shame in saying I'm not one of them - I'm just a fan. So I pay for games that tell me stories rather than write my own. And that's the best compliment I can give. They should do it. Not me. :)

If ME4 turned out to be confirming the IT and how Sheaprd breaks free of indoctrination, I could get behind that. For me, and many others I'd assume, Mass Effect is as much the setting as it is their Shepard and crew. It's not Mass Effect without Garrus, Tali, Liara, Joker, Wrex, Grunt, etc.

I really don't want a prequel for ME4, I want to know what happens long after the war is over. I know not everyone imagined Shepard surviving ME3, but I'd like to see a cameo of the surviving crew in ME4.

My opinion is simple. I think it is narrow minded and dumb to continue to make games about the same group of people over and over again. Why? it makes the universe feel unbelievably small. That's actually something I hated about DA2, all the DAO Cameos. It's like...wow really? you all just HAPPEN to be here? yea ok w/e. The ME Trilogy is over, Shepard's story is over. a cameo from one or two squadmates is expected, they are totally superstars now after-all, but the way DA2 did it was ridiculous in my opinion. The ME universe is bigger than Shepard, all the books and comics prove that in Spades. To let the best Sci Fi IP in history collect dust because some of you believe a single person makes a universe is totally wasteful.

Noble 6 was good, even more so since they could be female. I loved that. But good news on that front as well. 343 said MC is going to slowly take a more sideline role. He'll still be around, but other people are going to start taking the main stage soon.

Shepard sacrificed enough...they suffered enough...by asking Shepard to return imo you spit on their efforts and their sacrifices for your own selfish attachments. Shepard, even a Renegade Shepard, is the most selfless human being ever born. Despite all the atrocities they have experienced and delt with, all the lies and
corrpution...Shepard fought (and possibly died) for EVERYONE. For those slavers that killed their parents on Mindor, for all the people in Cerberus, even the people who murdered their comrades on Akuze. For all
those amoral gangsters Shepard grew up with on the hard streets of Earth, for those heartless Batarians that attacked Elysium, For men like Balak, who was willing to kill millions and an entire planet for
selfish revenge. Shepard bled for them all...sacrificed for them all...Is that not enough?
