Tali's another romance that always felt weird to me. It's got a serious 'creepy older professor hits on his student' vibe. Tali will always be the loveable dorky teenager.

Technically, Liara is the youngest one. In the first game she says she's little more than a child. Tali starts the first game as a [very] young adult.

The Asari reach adulthood sometime between 40 and 60 years old, and Liara is 106 when Shepard meets  her on Therum.

Tali was on her rite of passage into adulthood in ME1.

But biologically she's still an adult.

Where'd that snippet on Asari age come from? I'm not doubting you but I've never heard anything like that before.

On Illium, there's an Asari who says "I'm 60 years old, just moved out of my parent's place."

Morinth ran away from home in her 40s (Samara says the ardat yakshi syndrome manifests at maturity).

And we know that Liara worked as an archaeologist for 50 years prior to Mass Effect 1, when she was 106.

Oh, okay. I do remember Liara saying that about her age, but with the other evidence, then you're right. Hmmm. Guess they're both young adults in that case.

I think the "favored" romance choice on Bioware's part was definitely supposed to be Ashley. But as well as Liara and Tali were received, that changed pretty quickly.

I agree. Ashley got more content than the other characters and LIs in Mass Effect 1 (but nothing in ME2...and ME3 Ashley leaves a lot to be desired as well).

In all reality, Shepard is not perfect, either. If you do Arrival, then you've little right to judge others.

Liara and her stalker vibes and inability to understand "its over", Tali and her hero worship + naivete.

You didn't like those two in all their transparent nerdbait glory?

Bioware worked so very hard on constructing these characters to pander to a certain fantasy...it is a shame to see that go unappreciated.

To top it off these two are of course also virgins (lol) and Shepard is their first. I guess if Bioware was going to check off every other box on the nerd fantasy checklist they may as well go all the way.

Well, most Quarians only have sex a couple times in their life, presumably with the same partner. Liara is just a dork.

Quarians have the same life expectancy as humans, so presumably they would be biological adults around 18. The pilgrimage is done more out of necessity, in order to supply the Flotilla with sufficient ressources. The problem is, that they can't send off kids or very young adults. Tali of course has been an adult for a long time, she is just very juvenile in character.

I only get pleasure by constantly cutting off Liara and making her salute. One of the funnier scenes in ME1.

Bioware knows it's audience well. I've seen some on here saying that they don't want their virtual waifu having had prior sexual encounters and others(particularly the Liara ones) comment on how they don't want them dating anyone after their Shepard dies(They must love the practice of Sati).

They've done a good job at making some strong women too. But yeah, there is that other audience to cater to.

Hell, I'd even say Liara is strong, if you keep your distance.

Because Liara is totally gonna stay loyal after a half millenia....

You can find roleplay reasons to justify any choice by Shepard really.

You could have Shepard remain loyal to Liara, determined to win back the one that got away. After all she doesn't really shut down Shepard completely, unlike Ashley on Horizon. Its more of a case of being conflicted after having gone through two years of mourning and being afraid to lose someone she was close to again, *and* being preoccupied with taking down the Shadow Broker for his role in aiding the Collectors/Reapers. (not to mention, rescuing Feron)

Or you could have Shepard, newly single and fearful that the suicide mission might be his last, seek solace in the arms of one of the ME2 love interests. From there you could either have that develop into something serious, and have your Shepard remain devoted to that ME2 LI in ME3 as well, or you could have Liara remain his one true love, and have Shepard go back to her in LotSB (played after the suicide mission) and ME3, despite having romanced one of the ME2 LIs prior.

If you have Shepard romance a ME2 LI and go back to Liara in LotSB & ME3, Miranda works best IMO. Her romance arc in the second game can either be read as something serious or something casual (with Miranda getting unexpectedly attached), whereas the paragon Jack arc and Tali both come across as canonically serious from the get go.

That topic came up in the old Liara thread, and while some people were uncomfortable with the idea of Liara having other romances after Shepard's demise, I wouldn't say it was anything near a majority. Just like with the Mirmancers, Liara's fans aren't a monolithic group that agrees on everything.

As for me, I think Liara does date other people and likely marries again after Shepard is dead. It would be unrealistic for Liara, who would still be quite young even if High EMS Destroy Shep dies a very old man, to not have other relationships. It would also be quite depressing, and not something I'd imagine Shepard would want for her if he loved her.

It's wierd, looking back and remembering my initial ME1 playthrough this February. I had already planned to romance Liara in ME1, choose one of the others in ME2, then go back to Liara for ME3. By the time I got to ME2, I still wasn't sure on whether Miranda or Tali, eventually making up my mind near the end of the game. After that, I realised how much better Tali was in comparison to Liara, so I obviously knew who to choose for ME3, and it definitely paid off.

They're only nerdbait if you treat them as such.

I liked Tali's character because she has some believable emotions (esp. regarding her constantly being put into leadership positions that almost nobody would want).

I think Liara's character isn't believable, but she has a few flaws of her own that make her easily serviceable.

Except that Bioware didn't exactly invent this idea - all fairy tale "true love" is creepy as hell if you actually engage your brain for a second.

Repeatedly is technically the correct word, but between ME2 and ME3 it's more than just once or twice. Which in a trilogy, may as well be considered a constant.

Liara's believable enough. Obsessive people exist.

And I'm fine the way it was done in ME1. You could tell her to stop. What's unbelievable is that my Shepard starts accepting it in the next two games.

Aside from the contrived promotion to Admiral, what were the other times Tali is ever made a leader?

Might have to agree on the leadership being thrusted on her. I think they could have done her exile better. Even then, she's given a prominent role. I think it'd be cooler if she somehow met up with Shepard in that scenario, and then came to the Quarians as the exile/outsider.
