Yeah, it was certainly one of the worst levels in the game, along with the ending, geth consensus, and Citadel Coup (although that last one less so than the others because it actually has some decent gameplay).wolfhowwl wrote...

Besides, at that point the Alliance high command was already dead, remember? They got killed back on Earth after deciding that instead of coming up with their own plan they'd just ask the person they'd locked up for six months (and who apparently thinks that this isn't about tactics anyway).
Ugh, thanks for reminding me of the intro.
It was so bad in so many ways.

Crushing the geth and winning back their homeworld sounds pretty competent to me. Certainly more than those Alliance and asari who practically let the Reapers walk in and take their planets.Han Shot First wrote...
To be fair however, the Quarian Admiralty board is quite possibly the most incompetent military high command in the Mass Effect universe.
Raan is a moron though, I'll give you that one.
That only happen w/ Shepard's intervention though.

Stargazer's people are currently engaged in a brutal civil war, their argument is based on whether or not "The Shepard" was a Paragon HERO or a Paragade HERO.
Twenty-Six billion people have been killed in the fighting.

Of course which is why you would send hundreds of "competent soldiers" to do the job.
For example if The Shepard doesn't do arrival, the Alliance sends a commando team and they complete the job on their own.
No one is indispensable. Others will step up and take their place.

But being such an HERO shouldn't he be able to solve the conflict without any bloodshed?Grand Admiral Cheesecake wrote...

Truly The Shepard would have been HEROIC enough to stop the fighting.
Sadly these lesser organisynthetics did not get Shepard's HEROISM from his essence.
(Some obscure heretics have even argued that The Shepard might have been Renegon! But they were quickly destroyed by the Orthodox Shepites.)

Sometimes people have a difficult time realizing that just because the tasks are easy for them as a player, doesn't necessarily mean they're easy for the characters. Or easy in general. Cthulhu42 seems to be under the very silly impression that 'any competent soldier' can shoot their way through 50 geth.

Davey you are aware of a movie that had a downer ending and a good/nice guy choice leading to a bad outcome! I'm so proud of you!

I happen to value the rule of cool over realism in my video games and action films. Without them, and with everything being bound by the rule of cold logical realism, it would be rather droll, somber, and all together a depressing bore to play.
Be careful how you throw around the word 'realism.'

Maybe I should have typed vauling the rule of cool over heroism. As a thought experiment, do you think the rebels from the original star wars films are heroes?

Like I said, be very careful not to fall into a fallacy of thinking that 'coolness' and 'realism' in fiction are somehow opposed. That smart, intelligent, fiction is 'real' and that silly childish fiction is just 'cool.' A great deal of what may seem silly at first glance has very substantial principles behind it. And failing to understand those principles will lead you to making a lot of assumptions that just aren't true.
I can find myself to agree with this, given a 2 to 1 vote with my others.
