I have an interest in playing this kit.  The information I have found is usualy vague or riddle with personal opinions without facts.

What I would like to know is viability of the kit, will the kit beable to kill mobs/bosses in the later portion of the game?  What are some suggestions in regards of the Weapons mainly Bows/Xbows?

I be appreciative if anyone could give a clear Pros/Cons of the kit if possible as well.

I'm running Grond as an archer with the Avatars in no-reload thread (currently in Suldanessellar). He has 13 dex, and with bracers of archery his THACO is -14 at 19 lvl with Firetooth +4 (***). His damage output is great and he has 25% of all kills in the party (of 6 members). He is wearing the Aeger's Hide (and Helm of Charm Protection):  I don't want of him being charmed or confused - that would be bad for other party members. He is definitely not a frontliner (at least before he get Hardiness) but at range he is a killer.

1. Are you playing solo or do you have a tank to stand up the front for you?
2. Are you allowing arrows of dispel?

IME the Archer has great DPS because that’s all they get… they can’t stand in melee, open locks, turn un-dead or detect invisibility.

"they can't stand in melee"
I was, perhaps incorrectly, under the impression that an Archer could use his ranged weapon in melee without his opponents getting the usual 4 point To Hit bonus. Posted Image

I'm fairly sure enemies still get the bonus. However, a frontliner solves that or when solo I believe whirlwind attacks are fairly decisive - not speaking from first hand but I recall someone who solo'd the game and said as much. Failing that, there is usually a way to have a movement speed advantage and shoot / move / shoot / move etc.

Gate70,I went back and checked the Black Isle manual, and you are right. I guess that makes an Archer a great class to use in BG1 -assumiing Tutu or BGT-but a weaker and weaker one until you get HLAs

I guess that's where stealth helps solo, hit and hide.

They are still the best ranged attackers in the game. Or the second. Or 3rd. Maybe even 4th. Ah, I give up - no idea.

Dwarf kensai with bg1 throwing axe > dwarven thrower, Azuredge, K'logoroth.
Halfling fighter/thief with a sling > UAI weapons above.
Cleric / druid / mage with the energy blades spell. Not sure if fighter dualled to this is better?

I haven't viewed clips but this link should show a video of an archer in BG1 if that helps.

IME "arrows of dispel" give the Archer the advantage over other ranged dps types but that assumes a vacuum.

Example: Puk started life as a Wizard slayer and then dualed to Cleric in my current game… his ranged weapon of choice is the ‘Fire seeds’ Cassia makes for him.

Fire seeds;

They are +2 magic darts which do 2D8 fire damage in a radius of about 5 feet.

1. Because Puk is a Wizard Slayer they have 10% cumulative chance of causing spell failed against his targets… (not in the basic game but a common patch).

2. They are magic weapons so anyone can use them… even a Cleric.

3. The splash damage means my tank can take fire damage from them but also means that having a high enough fire resistance will make those same seeds heal my tank.

The point of all this is just that my character doesn’t work half as well without a Druid to make the seeds and a tank to hold the target at range.
