My bad - I linked DG's replies in this thread to the Alistair tantrum thread. Ah well.

Yes, that was...bad. ;) What say we move all this back to the thread from whence it came? We really need only one of these.... Let this one die.

Tell you what.

Next time we put in a male lead, we will make sure to make him the manliest and most stoic creature you could possibly imagine. Just for you. He will be so manly he will suck the body hair right off of John Wayne and make Chuck Norris weep with envy. He will never show a single emotion, not even at his grandmother's funeral, and will never utter a single complaint about your actions... he will simply reach out of the game, slap you across the face and then take over the party.

The rest of the party won't mind, and neither will you... because he will be that awesome. Deep down inside you will resent him, and resent the fact that every NPC in every town the party enters falls in love with him and not with you. But that part of you also knows he deserves that love. Even needs it.

I am certain there is not a single fault that you or anyone could find with such a character.

Though that is delightful, I need you to reassure me that you are joking.

Please, Mr. Gaider I *really* need you to reassure me that the next male lead will not be like this.

I am serious.

I agree, and I can only *imagine* the epic kvetching and whining that would come from the same crowd that 'hates Alistair' to begin with, because Macho NPC takes the story out of their hands.

It would kinda crack me up if there was a town or something that you walked into, and everybody starting raving over one of the NPCs with you

kinda like Jayne from Firefly in Jaynestown- he could have a song and everything!

I'd love that, actually...maybe I'm not the only famous one now! (I got seriously cheesed that no one paid any attention to anyone that was with me with the exception of the Landsmeet to begin with, and I have Eamon to thank for *that*. *glowers at Eamon* :)

I started out quite skeptical of Alistair, but he won me over.

As a female gamer, I'm very cognizant of the fact that usually the target audience for games is adolescent males. So I grit my teeth and ignore the T&A and ultra-macho male characters and try to have fun with it anyway.

Going into DAO and not knowing much about it, I imagined Alistair would be typical fantasy-fulfillment vicarious ******-fodder for the adolescent and young adult male demographic. I didn't WANT to like him.

Then something interesting happened. I started playing, and the character I assumed would be a ultra-macho punk turned out to be sweet and insecure and funny and charming.

I LIKE that he mourns when he loses someone he loves. I like that he's naive enough to not understand the necessity of political expediency and has to grow into that understanding. I like that he's flawed and unsure of himself, that he initially lacks the confidence to believe that he can be a leader.

About the only thing it turned out I DIDN'T like was the hair. I mean...seriously? I see that head of hair and start channeling the Buffy-Bot: "Angel's lame. His hair goes straight up, and he's bloody stupid." Thank God for the "Natural Alistair" morph.

That was such a great episode--not that there were any bad ones. *misses Firefly, hopes Chuck get renewed*

Don't see why Chuck would get axed... it's amazing

Also, I've gotta say, I enjoy Alistair as a character, and I can understand how his character evolves and acts based on his back story

I think if anyone here played KotOR and hated Carth they will hate Allistar. Emotional guy characters always get hated on from forum the peanut gallery.

Overall, I liked Alistair well enough but found his sense of humor to be distractingly modern.

I can't believe people think Alister is whinny.

I never got that impression about him at all.

Kudos to David for posting, I read his comment, then realized who posted it.

I'm like: oh snap!!!

Alister is awesome, certainly one of my favorite characters.

Mine too.

Alistair is a man who:
- Was born a bastard who barely knew his father, mother or half-brother.
- Was taken in by Arl Eamon who is Maric's wifes' brother. They're not even related. (Arl Eamon is a good man.I gotta give him props for that.)
- Was taken to the Chantry because Isolde is a biotch who only cares about her reputation and she treated him like an outcast.
- Was raised in the Chantry where the children picked on him.Later he trained to be a Templar.
(If he hasn't already,by now he probably feels not wanted.)
- Duncan comes along and see's that Alistair's abilites might help the Grey Warden's.Alistair figures he might as well join because he hates the Chantry life and he would be accepted in the Grey Warden's.Alistair see's Duncan as a person who actually finds Alistair useful and not as someone who is not wanted. If I were Alistair, I would be just as upset over Duncan's death.
- A new Grey Warden enters. If you romance him, he see's you as the best thing that has ever happened to him. If you're his best friend, he see's you as someone who cares about him and is looking out for him.
- Finds out he has a sister who turns out to be a gold digger who doesn't even care about trying to reunite with him.

I feel really bad for Alistair. I pity him. And I can relate and understand what he's gone through.I want to be that friend who is there for him even though other people shunned him.Someone that he can depend on.
All things considered,I think Alistair handles his situation pretty well.Would some people in real life handle it any better? Probably not. I know I couldn't.I mean it's one thing to have a few of those things happen to you, but all of those? Someone would have a nervous breakdown, or worse.
This is why I like him.
I think Alistair has every right to be angry if you let Loghain live. You're not only betraying him but also, he can't believe you're letting a man who tried to kill you too, live.Alistair can't believe that. It's like a WTF!? moment.
Alistair is not whiny. He's having a normal reaction to the death and betrayal of his friend/father figure. Sure, he has an innocence about him and inexperience with some things, but what do you expect from a person who was forced to live in a Chantry for most of his life?

BTW,he even apologizes for being upset, which IMO,nobody should be apologizing for grieving over someone who they cared about.Ever.

I did too. At first. My first playthrough I didn't take him along not only because I was a tank but also because I found him somewhat annoying.

But the truth is after 4+ playthroughs his character is far more interesting than most. Consider the facts, he is the bastard child of Maric, recently had all his friends and last remaining family (aside from spiteful sister) die at the hands of the darkspawn and is now faced with the task of creating an army to defeat a blight. Oh and now people want to put him forward as King in a potential succession contest.

Despite these severe challenges and hardships he remains upbeat and funny. I wish most people in the world were as well adjusted as Alistair.

Personally I find that I can relate more to him after he's hardened, but that has to do more with my own worldview than any previous like or dislike of Alistair.

I think that the dislike people exhibit for Alistair is probably a barometer for their discomfort with emotion and for their lack of self awareness. I shudder to think those who "hated Alistair" would react to people who exhibit real emotions and doubt.

Finally, having gone through multiple playthroughs, I find it unsurprising that Alistair (during the epilogue) turns out to be a good and loved King. Like a real person he has doubts about himself and his capacity to rule. More importantly, he doesn't crave power but sees being king as a responsibility to be taken seriously and to benefit others rather than himself.

I would hope that in the sequels, more characters are as well designed as Alistair, Morrigan, Zevran and Leliana.

-edited for format.

I guess sometimes a fella has to snap and try to explain things to people.

Unfortunately this usually works one out of one hundred times or so.

I appreciate all the story work that went into Dragon Age. My biggest complaint with World of Warcrack was that it was about loots and social trainwrecking I mean networking.

That said - Mr. Gaider needs to understand that most people don't appreciate a good story these days as they lack the capacity. Most folks want to grind and kill kill kill. I disagree with it, but that's the way the world is.

This thread's been around for 10 months and has the awesomeness of Gaider, so the new one pales in comparison.

The two threads were linked. I clicked the link. All the Gaider responses were chained together in a giant Gaider-Rant. Hence the necro-thread response.

I guess I was just pointing out that responding to technical problems with a short "we are aware of the issue and are addressing it" is an appropriate response (as long as it actually is being addressed).

But when a writer responds at length so vehemently to criticism . . . I can understand his/her frustration. But were I a writer of video game stories I'd probably not spend my time "correcting/explaining to" so many people because only a select few are going to maturely consider the response. I think the staff's involvement with the fans is good to a point, but it's not worth having an aneurysm burst.

In short - most people are dumb and unreachable. I would never put the effort in that Gaider did in this thread.

Speaking of which - I'm out on this one.
