No you guys just seem to complain about something so petty because Alistair is whiny but then stands up for himself and you don't like it. "Oh Alistair is a whiny little bugger...can't he just stop" "Oh Alistair yelled at me for killing his family, WTF is up with that?"

So? You expect us all to be fangirls?

So, he shouldn't be upset?  He should just ignore the whole thing? How you handle the conversation in camp afterwards can make a difference. I've killed one or the other at different times, but I still managed to come out of the conversation without a negative score. But playing it the way you just said you do, do you really care what Alistair has to say? I've played it both ways. Unfortunately after being raised as a templar with chantry dogma wouldn't lead to a companion that would think, in the short time he was influenced by the Grey Wardens, like a grey warden is expected to.  Just my opinion.
L2A

He can be upset, but don't blame me for it when A) You don't have the balls to lead and make decisions yourself and B) You were RIGHT THERE, you knew the stakes.

Wouldn't it be nice if everybody acted and behaved like we want them to.  mmmmm that's my kind of fantasy, oh wait er wrong type of game I'll save that for my fantasy life. I want to play a roleplay game with lifelike companions, this game provides that. Have you had Sten call your actions stupid yet?

A) the decision he made was to follow you, but he didn't say blindly.  B) Expressing his dissatisfaction doesn't mean he doesn't know the stakes, you can even call him on that and he'll admit it, at least he has for all my hero's, but I tend to make hero's that are cunning and can get peeps to see his/her view. I really enjoy the depth and complexity of the characters in DA. Something that was sort of lacking in ME and JE. Like Casey Hudson says about controversial ME2 characters: A good sign a character is well written is the strong reactions from fans . . . loosely paraphrased.

Starting Alistair love/hate threads only enforces this :)

You did something to his family, people he cares for and what do you expect? Him to praise you and love you?

Of course some people are going to expect that. If they're shallow and not particularly paying attention. I mean, really, the amount of "Me! Me! Me!!" that some players exhibit it's incredibly ironic that they would actually come here and call someone else whiny.

Seriously, I am surprised you still have the patience to read in this forum, especially threads like this. The endless bickering's enough to drive a person nuts.

Funny, i thought the writers would be pleased to hear our debates about the story. Guess they want praise or nothing.

There is a difference between liking a character and being a fangirl to disliking the character and complaining about petty bull...like he is whiny and then he yells at you. He stood up for what he believes in...is that REALLY that bad???

The Redcliffe thing, I guess I can forgive because, you're right, that's his family (though its not like he comes at you in a blind rage screaming "YOU BASTARD, YOU KILLED MY FAMILY ARRGGHHH!!" its more of a hips thrust to one side, wagging a finger going "You bad person! I can't believe you didn't look for another option! Shame on you! Oh well, I guess I can forgive you, but I'm simply NOT happy about this!").

But, the Landsmeet thing? How do you explain that? The dude is standing in front of all of the lords and nobles of Ferelden telling them he'd rather watch the country fall (since he won't lift a finger to help from that point) than allow Loghain into the ranks of the Grey Wardens? Because it 'sullies their good name'? I beg your pardon, their 'what'?!

Loghain is at fault for not only the death of his half brother but the only person who actually cared for him in a long time...Duncan...whom he considered family...and you want to let the man become a Grey Warden? The man who did all that out of not wanting Orlais to come in and help...and then BLAMED the Grey Wardens for the death of the King...so he could get the glory.

We "complain" because we care, and have an interest in the game.

Too much praise is bad for you writers. :P

At that point, it really doesn't matter what the hell has come before. This is where he just breaks down and cannot fathom a world where the Grey Wardens aren't actually nice super happy bunny people spreading fairy dust everywhere. You have a serious shortage of Grey Wardens to face the Archdemon with, but he'd rather you rush head-first at the thing, die and let the entire country fall, than let Loghain into the order. Being glorious heroes isn't what the Grey Wardens is about, its about winning, by any means necessary. Alistair just doesn't get that, and instead throws a temper tantrum and attempts to take the throne just to get his way. And Anora points out at that moment "Is THIS the kind of man you want running the kingdom?", to that I say, "HELL, no!".

The only way I can satisfactorially get Alistair through the Landsmeet is to have a serious personal grudge on Loghain myself and to agree with Alistair's philosophy of "to hell with the world! So long as the Grey Wardens are revered as heroes, I'm happy".

Tell you what.

Next time we put in a male lead, we will make sure to make him the manliest and most stoic creature you could possibly imagine. Just for you. He will be so manly he will suck the body hair right off of John Wayne and make Chuck Norris weep with envy. He will never show a single emotion, not even at his grandmother's funeral, and will never utter a single complaint about your actions... he will simply reach out of the game, slap you across the face and then take over the party.

The rest of the party won't mind, and neither will you... because he will be that awesome. Deep down inside you will resent him, and resent the fact that every NPC in every town the party enters falls in love with him and not with you. But that part of you also knows he deserves that love. Even needs it.

I am certain there is not a single fault that you or anyone could find with such a character.

Dear David

I am glad that you care about your characters so much that you feel obliged to have to defend them in the rough and tumble that is the forum.  But, please, please don't do this.  I would not touch a game that had such a protagonist with a barge pole.

Alistair is a great character because he dares to be what other male characters in games are not, failible, tender, gawky and inexperienced whilst still being brave and resourceful.  There are plenty of guys out there who are just like that and, they deserve to be celebrated, respected and love as much as the manly types, more so, because at least they can appreciate it!

Thanks for your creation and keep up the good work.

Hmm so the I should recruit the guy that has hunted me all this time to get me killed, tried to poison one of his own Arls because it was competiton, called me an Orlesian spy only minutes before, and denied that there even was a blight.......and suddenly I must trust this guy to watch my back and help me kill the archdemon???? What?!?

I love you. That's not me throwing praise at you for no reason, that's the effect of you showing off your charismatic charm. You're kind of like that character you were describing earlier. The one that sucks the manly chest hairs off of John Wayne and makes all of the girls weak at the knees.

I think the reason people can't handle Alistair is because he is inconviently written like a real human being. Oh, the horror. I guess we need to go back to two dimensional pixel cuttouts with simple, linear romances?

The enemy is bashing at the gates, and you'd rather let everyone die than do what's necessary? That doesn't make him a bad person, that makes him a TERRIBLE Grey Warden, and a royal (no pun intended) pain in the ass for the REAL ones to drag around.

If you're not going to do what's necessary for the sake of saving the entire world, then get out of my unit, sit down and shut the **** up.
