Melee weapons are a thing now in the Mass Effect universe [I know, right?]: who would have thought smashing up robots with giant hammers or stabbing space ninjas in the backs with samurai swords would be so much fun.

Like them or loathe them I think the debate about their place in the Mass Effect universe is over now and melee weapons and attachments (e.g Batarian Guantlet, [N7 Paladin] Omni-Shield) will figure even more prominently in the next Mass Effect game because they add an entirely new dimension to gameplay.

The next logical extention of this idea would be to incorporate melee weapons into a new weapons slot that ties directly into the weight capacity system. I think this would be especially fantastic for vanguards because of the synergy potential and variety it would add to biotic charge alone. Not to meantion all the other unique build potential on the other classes.

Have any interesting ideas for new melee weapons you'd like to see in the next Mass Effect game - please share in the comments below.

Melee weapons only really make sense for biotics who can close distances quickly or soldiers engaged against reaper ground forces like Husks, don't really it fits in with mass effect to be using them all the time unless it is bayonets and the such attached to guns

How so? Shouldn't such a debate result in some form of agreement?

Something realistic please - a ninja sword driven my muscle strength alone is not going to be able to hurt anyone wearing armour capable of withstanding sustained automatic railgun fire.

The results are in: melee characters are very popular. The Krogan Warlord (top 3) and N7 Shadow (top 10) are amongst the most popular characters in muliplayer (N7 Paladin is also very popular but mostly for Snap Freeze - i'm guessing) there's clearly a demand there.

Try taking your automatic railgun armor into gold/platinum cerberus and see what good it does against Phantom OHK attacks: a certain quote comes to mind, namely; mess with the best and the vest won't help ya - 2pac.

Edit: Comparing future weapons tech like Energy Swords and Gravity hammers to modern or twentieth century warfare is a little silly. What If the Germans had had lightsabers?

I like the idea. The n7 slayer already has a version of this.

What has to happen first is a realignment of the fitness tree. No more choosing between melee and extra health, because a melee character needs both

Multiplayer was a very separate thing from the single-player campaign. I doubt many people took it seriously, especially when they introduced Volus characters. So just because we have fancy gimmicks in that part of the universe doesn't mean it now fits in the single-player campaign (the "real" game, if you will). So I agree with AlexMBrennen: the debate about their place in the ME universe should not be considered over.

I don't personally want biotic hammers or ninja swords in the next Mass Effect. The omni-blade is already stretching the credibility a little. Let's just stick to what ME did well: sleek guns.

I can see monofilament and high frequency blades. Concealed in arm mountings. A upgrade to include the omni tools nano disassemblers to help "eat" through tougher armor that requires sustained contact. The omni blade was a silly attempt to incorporate a light saber type weapon. The blade should be smaller panels that move into place thanks to an electrical current and nanites bonding. the high frequency effect should only be apparent on the edge only. There are prototype scalpels that are interesting and should by used as inspiration. The nano disassemblers should give off a heat wave from the edge when in atmosphere. Being held together by electro magnetics would give the blade great flexibility rather than breaking. The nano disassemblers also work on blunt weapons as well. A retractable arm spike would work well with threads of monofilament wire , again with electrical deployment and possible nano disassembler upgrade. The electrical current used to deploy the weapons does not shock the target.

I am talking about lore here (e.g. The codex entry on combat hard suits); well done for noticing that ME3 gameplay breaks lore left and right.

Who is doing any such thing? All the standard ME guns are rail guns (do you see black powder smoke and shell casings?)
