Am I missing something here? Since when did EA games announce they would be $80? Last I heard is all next-gen games are $60 and the rumor was EA was going to $80. Which makes absolutely zero sense if all your competition is at $60. If EA wants to go bankrupt sitting on a shelf full of $60 games...

If anything, games will remain $60 and the publishers will start pushing more DLC out if they need to offset the costs. $80 is the last thing any publisher wants to do when games should be getting cheaper in a terrible world economy.  Especially with the rise of cheap gaming in mobile/tablet and F2P games.

This makes no sense. I'm not sure where this rumor or w/e came from but it's silly.

Why not? The persons, who are in leading positions and who are in charge, will leave the company and get gratuities or other well paid jobs, when the company goes to the wall.

Guess I don't have to worry about buying DA Inquisition. Sucks but no chance in hell I'm spending that kind of money on a Bioware game anymore. Maybe after first month when it drops to 30.

Where did all this eighty dollars crap come from? Everything I have read said games will remain $60 for the most part.

This. Someone put out a link because this is news to me. And I read gaming news every morning.

I'm saving money because I'm not buying a console and my PC is up to specs, but I still consider 80 dollars a lot of money. In Romanian currency, that comes to around 266ron which is too much in my oppinion. The PC version always ends up cheaper than the console one but the way the economy is going, many people, including myself will have to limit themselves when it comes to future titles.

Ultimately, I'd feel--although I have no market research and mostly doing this armchair--it would hinder the market more than help. Game release is usually when you want to ship as many copies of a game as possible, the buzz and word of mouth gets people to splurge more quickly and the number of sales diminish over time.

A lower price would help those who'd be on the fence but will a window shopper who briefly saw adverts and reviews a month or two when the game launched at 80$ still feel the hype which might've made them impulse buy beforehand? After all, we're constantly told that the hardcore fans of a series aren't the ones which marketing is trying to target.

With the rise of microtransactions, indie developers offering titles on a budget and mobile gaming, we're being drawn into an age where people are more finicky about what game they'll throw money at and how much they'd be willing to throw. Increasing the price might just make them pass up on buying the new title and buy something else.

I could see this being the case.  I don't actually know either.

On a personal level I consider what I feel a game will be "worth" (as best as one can without playing it) and pick it up at that particular price point.  Or in the case of a F2P game like League of Legends, I say "I feel this game is worth X."  (I capped myself at $20 for LOL a long time ago, and still haven't paid any more than that).

Here is some info on it

I don't understand why people keep saying that they can't find any information. There's hundreds of articles on this.

EA hasn't made a public statement about it, but it's heavily rumored that they might do this.

Man, I am jealous of anyone who'll get DAI for a mere $80. I paid $120 each for DAO and DA2, and expect to fork out the same for the next game. (They are the collector's editions, of course, but standard games cost about $80 in Australia.)

Of course, since I've finished DAO eight times and DA2 seven so far, I can't say I wasted the investment.

I would pay $80.00 for a game if I felt the content was worth it, I have always been of the mind that video games should not have to all be priced the same. Making all games release at the same price simply encourages short cutting games to turn a faster profit rather then taking the time to make a good game with a lot of quality content.

Many, myself included have made the argument in the past that bioware does not need to make their games like everyone else. At times comparisons have come up, one such comparison I have seen and used myself at one point is the restaurant comparison, saying for instance that just because McDonalds is the most profitable restaurant, doesn't mean every restaurant should be a MdDonalds.

There is a problem though when no matter what food you serve you have to sell it for the same price McDonalds does, which is why I have never supported the concept of a flat price for all games.

I'd happily pay twice this price, considering all the enjoyment that Bioware games have given me. I'm not saying that there haven't been disappointments, but the good far outweighs the bad as far as I am concerned. $80 doesn't seem like a lot of money to me considering how many hours of gaming I usually get out of a Bioware game.

Almost the opposite is true, really.

Responsibilities, financial commitments, and working for every penny, all make it more difficult or undesirable to waste money. :)

People who post things like this are usually ****ing idiots.

While I can happily pay to travel across the Atlantic on holiday at the drop of a hat by dipping into my pocket, funnily enough, I don't take kindly to companies and people trying to put one over on me by artificially pushing up product values.

You need to read up on supply and demand economics, I recommend Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, one of the most important classical economist pieces, and any MBA text dealing with price elasticity and micro economics.

I'll pay 80 dollars for this game if I can have the ability to have sex with my romanced partners... no I don't just want my screen to go black, I want the actual thing... for my characters to get naked and show each other how much they love each other.

No . I'm not a pixel pervert and I don't get off on it either. I want total RPG freedom.

Actually, $80 doesn't sound like much for an RPG. Back in the 80s, RPGs for consoles were fairly rare, and would often cost about that when new, and had far less content than the games of today do. It's not until the mid 90s that console games started coming down in price, probably due to competition.

What I think is silly is that all games these days when they come out cost the same.

Anyway, that's not addressing the veracity of this statement. I honestly don't care. I usually buy games and DLC on sale.

The game is scheduled to be released late next year, isn't it? I've not found a place anywhere that has it up for pre-order, much less figuring a price. Why do we have to speculate over something like this and assume the worst?

And as far as things getting more expensive, well, video game prices are a lot lower in price nowadays than they used to be. I've paid upwards of $80 USD on third party titles from large retail chains in the past with no added bonuses and no such thing as add-on content in the form of DLC coming down the line.

At the end of the day, it's a hobby, not a necessity. Some hobbies are very expensive. And, let's face it, what isn't increasing in price these days?

And when the market stops buying due to increased price, they're left with less money than they'd have gotten from cheaper prices. Selling something for more doesn't guarantee you'll make more money.

While this thread is news to me (I have ZERO clue what games will cost on next gen platforms), the thing about this is that it comes across pretty quickly if people aren't buying the game.

Still, if the market isn't buying and the game quickly drops down to $60, has much changed for you?

I was going by what was posted on IGN  as to what some  retailers were listing games

At a price of $80, I am fine with that.

HOWEVER, I am putting that price to a new standard and it better have more than 1 year of development time. EA better increase the development time for any game at that price or I'm not buying.

$80 = £51.

So for my next gen console I'm paying a whole £2 more for my games?

My, that's alot.

By the same logic of this ignorant rumor we should all already be paying $100 for games because Australians do.

Directly translating prices between countries doesn't work.  The UK price means absolutely nothing for the US price.

Brits should probably worry right now, but Americans shouldn't, and you certainly shouldn't be jumping to conclusions and already stirring up a **** storm over it.  So far, EA already has BF4 priced at $60 for next gen, meaning so far all the evidence points to the contrary of this rumor, at least for US.

tl;dr bad rumor is bad.

There are several editions for gamer to buy anyway. As far as I can tell, in the US, normal edition of a new game is around $60, occasionally there are some games from small companies that cost only $40 or even $20 only (I remember buying new Torchlight 2 for $20). It's not that unreasonable, consider the amount of work they put in developing each games (though some are shamelessly rip off. I'm talking bout you, movie licensed games!). if new game is too pricey, well, be patient and wait for awhile, price will drop. Anyways, I always think that spending extra money on collector edition or the like is kind of a waste. I just want my game, all those bonus things aint worth that much.

people already pay this now, those that think the majority won't no they will. What WILL happen is games won't be per-ordered as much in the future and only the "top games" will get the money and those indi games for 5-20 bucks from services. The rest will fall off and die, killing allot of smaller publishing houses. Meh it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Thou it will allow those one hit wonders to become over-night sensations now that main stream games will cost so much, which in turn makes people buy less which in turn makes people look at cheaper games which in turn if one is a sleeper hit will sell 100x more then it would in the previous market.

Hmm.. shall be an interesting time when and if this happens.

80 dollars... 60 dollars is already a GREAT deal of money for me; I'm at the point where I buy maybe 3 games a year. (And I only bought one game this year full price.) If it's at 80 dollars, that will drop to 1-2.

p.s. And I'm not a kid or a part-timer; I have a full-time job.
