Shaggy ones, I hope.

I'm not sure I'm reading this right. It sounds like the race selection is replacing background selection, but it also sounds like background selection is being replaced by something more nuanced.
Are selectable backgrounds out entirely?
Yes, selectable backgrounds are out entirely. Seeing as we never went into detail as to what that entailed, it shouldn't be a hardship-- what exists now is race/class choice, and reactivity to that, with some added nuance I mentioned but won't get into (but which also provides reactivity).
when you say class choice........does that mean the characters will act differently if your a Mage? I hated when your were treated like a regular human in DA2 even though you could cast spells. I want the characters to make comments.

They told us we should be able to have a castle of our own (maybe the one we saw on mountains in a concept art).AelixVII wrote...
The video mentions an aim to make the player feel like they are growing their organization as well as the group of companions we are used to acquiring.
I would like to know if we can expect this to be reflected in the 'player housing' element of the game i.e party camp, companion houses etc. Will a part of this organization involve building up say our own settlement like a castle or even a small town/city like we sort of did with Vigil's Keep?
I understand if this can't be revealed yet.

I hope they chose a Blank Slate.
I'm with you on that one. I wonder if they're going TOTAL blank slate, or not actually a blank slate at all but giving a tidbit of info here and there about our character's past actions and such.

So... forgive me if this has been covered, but does that mean that your race will affect your class? Maybe something like an elf mage would have abilities as say, a Keeper, that wouldn't be available to a human mage? Or something. I'm thinking aloud (a-text?).
You're conflating classes with specializations.
No... well, kind of. I'm asking if race will affect anything with the 'basic' class. I'm assuming that each race will have all the options (minus the dwarf mage), but the way David's been listing them together just reminds me a bit of the old RPGs where class was your first choice, and that limited the race/character you could play. I'm just really poor at wording things. And also stalking from work trying to hide from my crabbier co-workers, so I'm kind of half absorbing things..
EDIT: Though, I guess either way would be more or less the same thing. Specializations exclusive to race might be kind of cool

I just don't want the background to be so detailed that it limits my character design. I'd like the game to start with my character in some location, and have me decide how and why he got there.Ragabul the Ontarah wrote...
I prefer at least *some* material on the player's background, even if it's as simple as "grew up in Candlekeep." I don't really want to play the mysterious stranger who just shows up in town one day.
I would be satisfied with just being able to pick some dialog options in which I can fill in my characters background as well. I'm okay with inventing my own background. I just want the background (mine or Bioware's) to show up in the game verbally somewhere. I don't want it to exist 100% in my imagination.
In NWN, the PC starts as a student at the Academy, but the player gets to decide where the character was from before that, and why the character is at the Academy, and even what level the character is at the start of the game. That's the gold standard for backgrounds in BioWare games, I think.

I think your suggestion on the matter that was previously suggested of having one background option being NO background is still a perfectly valid solution. You can just be an elf, dwarf or human who just showed up to the party with no background at all (or, at least, no game-defined background).
That is fine as long as the world notices the difference on which race and class you play and acts accordingly.

I like that in Skyrim, guards will comment on your use of magic(with different lines depending on what type you favor), your favored weapon, what guilds you were a part of, etc etc.
Hope DA:I has its own version of this reactivity.

While I don't mind the lack of a selectable background, I would prefer my character to be somewhat pre-defined historically. Origins did a great job in this department.

Last time I saw it was Fable:The Journey, but I'd rather see it in something like a DA or TES.

Though Skyrim is a bit odd in this respect, as the guards will react to what skills you have, not what skills they've seen you use. They'll say "Hands to yourself, sneak thief," even if you've never used those skills in any city before.LPPrince wrote...

Aye, but I think it'd be a bit difficult for devs to go into that much detail, having guards/civilians remembering what you did specifically in front of them. I just like to think they heard about it from other holds.

Oblivion had first person horse riding, and I had no issue with it. The fact that Skyrim got rid of it was anoying. Hopefully Bioware makes it so that it isn't too bad; I imagine one of the big problems for me in Skyrim was that the camera kept bobbing up and down with each clop of hoofs.LPPrince wrote...

On an unrelated note, I'm very intrested in eventually learning when and why Varric and Cassandra apparently decided to team up.
