This is a giant concern of mine as well. I want each race to have a different origin that actually matters and make playing the different races make a difference beyond cosmetics and the occasional racial slur.
I took it to mean that it will work much the same as DA:O, where our choice of race and class result in the background. As in... Human + Rogue = Human Noble background. Human + Mage = Circle Mage background. Etc.
I could be wrong, of course.

Seconded. I detest first-person perspective unless it is an option only and interchangeable with third-person (like most of TES gameplay). Any game that locks me into first-person is I game I'll have to skip, as it makes me feel sick and claustrophobic.

Better yet I hope the final product is Not full of incoherent, incomprehensible, absurdity or this Hero having little or no relevance in Thedas History. I dont like to play the underdog.

Anymore...? No one, at any time, confirmed the backgrounds had anything to do with nationality. So how could it ever be lost with this new announcement?
