I loved them in Red Dead Redemption.

Or "her", actually.

She was my only horse throughout the whole game. :3

Gah, I hated the horses with a passion in that game.  Fricken rattlesnake would kill them in one hit, I always accidentally shoot them when firing my rifle, and they would always run off once I dismount.

BTW....

Will companions be able to use mounts as well? I hated how none my followers could use one in Skyrim.

Yes, but charging full speed at a cliff and capping your horse in the back of the head at the very edge and watching poor John soar off and ragdoll down the cliff was morbidly entertaining.

...what, was I the only one?

I actually wouldn't be surprised if they went with no set background. I really would not be surprised.

Bioware's almost never done a game where you have no past and it's never referenced. They could do it in DAI, but it would be a radical departure from every single game they produced since BG1, with the one exception of the NWOC which could barely be said to have a campaign (and was itself a radical departure from BG2 and every subsequent Bioware game over the last decade).

There is a limit to how much "efficiency" developers can get from 7-8 year old hardware. They can't just pull performance out of their rear. This is the reason why developer like CDPR are foregoing current gen systems altogether and making Witcher 3 a next gen exclusive. There comes a point where experience with these systems will amount to almost insignificant advancements.

You realize most  early games on new consoles are usualy full of glitches and poorly optimized because the devs haven't had the time to get familiar with the new hardware right?

It usually takes 2-3 years for a new console to get good games.

The Xbone and PS4 are practically PCs, literally using a lot of off-the-shelf PC parts. Easy to use unified RAM solutions, extremely simple CPUs and GPUs. Have you been reading what developers are saying about developing for them? They're an absolute breeze compared to the exotic nightmare architectures of the 360 and especially PS3 especially due to their very, very simple architectures.

Your comment about not getting good games until 2-3 years is a little nuts too, personally. Within the first year and a half of the 360's life, we got excellent (non-glitchy) launch titles like COD2, Kameo, NFS: Most Wanted, PGR3, and throughout the first year GRAW, Oblivion, Dead Rising, Gears of War, and a bunch of others.

Ok all this stuff is awesome but did the article or someone say you can choose your own name? Please for the love of god let the characters have a surname that's interchangeable with the title Inquistor. I like choosing my first name but I don't want to go back to Origins "you" and "warden" every other line. Especially with a voice protagonist being confirmed, it's super awkward being referred to as "you" every other line.

and how do you suggest they do that, given that you can pick 3 different races? Or PC of all 3 races should have same surname? That doesnt seem right to me.

In the same way that DAII referred to Hawke as he/she depending on your gender. I get the fact it might not be feasible but considering DAI is fully voiced as opposed to Origins silent protagonist, it's just the immersion factor. Granted, KOTOR managed to do this and it wasn't terrible.

I mean imagine this:
Companion: So Inquistor, where are we off to today?
Companion Two: You shouldn't talk to the Inquistor like that. Granted you could easily fix this with her/him pronouns but I liked being called the last name when it was necessary. DAII shoehorned it of course because of the narrative but would it really be that hard to do a few takes of "Surname?" where it's only necessary.

With NPCs and such I've no problem being called Inquistor most of the time. Companions it's a different story. That's where the immersion factor comes into play. And yes I know it'd be awkward since Hawke worked as a vaguely ambigous surname ( a good surname) and being called "Dupuis" might not have the same punch. That's why it'd be important to have strong surnames. Even nicknames ala Varric would be better than "you" syndrome. Do you really want to be referred to as "hey you" throughout the game. Yes this is a bit nitpicky on top of the awesome stuff GI's shown (MULTIPLE RACES WOOO) but it always seemed important even in DAII with various references to the Warden's last name like Mahariel.

How about this then, a background that defines the circumstances of your beginnings but not what you did itself? "Elf who grows up in an alienage" is wildly different, and I'd argue much less defining, than "elf who grew up in an alienage, joined the gangs, and then gained renown for holding off enemies in the Skyllian Blitz Battle for Ferelden"

I'm intrigued to see how the addition of horses will work. Will there be a horsemanship skill tree? Can you level up, name and armor your horses? Can you knock your enemies off their own horses? Can you be knocked off your horse? Does your castle have a stables? So many more questions.

EA's basically saying how about a background that leaves room for interpretation, rather than being clear cut and definitive.

That really only works in Bethesda games. This ties into what I was talking about before considering they cut the backgrounds. I like the fact your class/race affects your "origin" but it should be similiar to DAO's system minus the prologue section. Human/Elf/Dwarf determines your surname, your home country, background while your class determines their placement within the world. So a human warrior might be a chevalier, a human mage well a circle mage or an apostate, human rogue might be bard. Elves would be a little harder and same with dwarves. It's tricky no doubt but hopefully it'll be more defined. It'll probably work like DAII system but more expanded. If you chose warrior or rogue, you were in Cailan's army. Mage? Apostate.

This.

That dlc just showed that Bethesda is as bad as EA when it comes to DLCs.

Just imagine if Bethesda started doing 10$ Day 1 DLCs'....

Oh man. There'd better not be a storyline about a horse dying. (That's what that makes me think of.)

Can you imagine how emotional it would be if your horse was riddled with arrows while carrying you to safety before dying?
