I'm pretty sure he just said he hasn't been called up yet. Given the time till release, that doesn't really mean he isn't going to be there at all.

That would pretty much settle what character I would make. With Hawke I didn't rly care about a Varric romance but as a femdwarf that changes things.

No, his tweet was very ambiguous, one might even say 'coy'. I wouldn't take it as confirmation of anything.  See:

The red-haired Orlesian is Leliana, almost certainly.  The fan-favourite knight-captain is almost certainly Cullen. 

Aveline wasn't an Orlesian, although she was red-haired, and she was a guard captain, not a knight-captain.

If I remember correctly Aveline is Orlesian. I would rather take Aveline over Lelianna.

I think you're right that Aveline has Orlesian ancestry, but she self-identifies as Fereldan. She pays homage to King Alistair if you have her in your party during the King Alistair quest.

Edited to add: yeah, according to the wiki, her father was a Chevalier who fled to Ferelden. She was definitely raised in Ferelden, if not born there (that's never made clear), her father sponsored her into King Cailan's service, and she joined the Fereldan army.

I doubt it even more now that we know Cassandra is in. Both of them in the party would seem a little...redundant.

Agreed; Leliana (and Cullen for that matter) may be an NPC rather than a companion. The hints dropped about returning characters are in a sidebar that discusses both companions and NPCs. I am not one of the Cullen fans, but I do kind of think he'd be more interesting as a playable companion rather than an NPC, just because of his being a Templar, having had a crush on a mage, having seen how crazy Templars can get, etc.

Regarding Aveline & Leliana..

Aveline and Leliana have similar ethnic backgrounds but different national origins. Both had mothers from Ferelden and Orlesian fathers, but Aveline was raised in Ferelden, whereas Leliana was born and raised in Orlais.  Also at different periods both were in the service to their respective nation. Aveline was in Ferelden's army, and Leliana was basically an Orlesian spy.

The preview was definitely talking about Leliana.
