Can someone please post a link to where the pictures of the elves and dwarves are from?

Those do look great!

That lady Dwarf is so cute too!

Okay, now I'm excited to get my hands on this character creator!

In Russia we say: "На вкус, на цвет товарищей нет" ("The taste and the color of the friends do not"). Everyone likes different things.
But for myself I say: new redesign is beautiful. All: humans, dwarves, elves - look better.

As for Zevran in DA: O I liked him. About DA2 did not want to remember.

PS: The artist looked at the portrait of Zevran when he created the model for DAI :)

The human female and the elven female look almost identical to one another. The ears are the only difference.

I don't care what they do with the elves as long as they make them less stressful to look at as before.

It seemed like their goal in Origins and DA2 was to make them look as ugly as possible.

So do the males.
Sure, they have different haircut.

My biggest problem with the elves in DA][ was how anorexic they looked. They just looked incredibly unhealthy.

I think the issue with the elves in DA2 for most people were that they weren't fleshed out - in every sense of the word. A lot of them were very thin and in some cases so much it made them appear bordering starvation. This could be explained by their diminished height and the idea of slim/slender builds but still; it made me want to give them money to buy food.

In the more metaphorically sense of the word there is the fact that so few elves were actually given a unique model with proper facial features, wrinkles and yes, let's face it, eyebrows. They were downright eerie to behold and felt strangely incomplete. As if they were just placeholders that would be replaced by proper elves once more models were created.

I myself couldn't be more happy about the other, more refined elves in DA2, such as Fenris, Merrill and Marethari. Yes admittedly I, too, had to get used to their new looks but I loved their uniqueness and special features and believe that if only more had been completed to a degree such as them, people wouldn't hate them so much.

Personally, I pray we don't return to smallish humans with pointy ears again. That would be a downright shame in my book.

I think they are identical. I think the three sets of pictures are the human, elf, and dwarf versions of the same two faces.

It's almost like they're using a standard model to highlight three different racial features. :3

The elves in DA2 grew on me. They resembled what the books describe them as, imo. More than DAO elves, anyway. Especially those "marble-y" eyes. I hope they keep their pretty eyes, since that is something frequently mentioned about them. In The Stolen Throne it mentions that elves can see better in the dark than other races. I wonder if that could be integrated into gameplay in some way.

Much better! I like this design. I'm glad they are going in another direction for their art. I think they worked on Star Wars too much and let their cohorts from Austin influence them. XD

Back to short, slim pointy eared humans then? That's a bit annoying when they'd managed to take a small step away from fantasy cookie cutter elf design in DA2. Especially given you can actually play one here. Count me as a bah, humbug.

I really preferred the DA2 elves. Sure, there were some messed up examples, but I like what they were going for with the new design. Everyone here's so focused on Zevran (who I personally didn't think looked that bad) and that former slave-girl, but what about Merrill? Fenris? Athenril? There's undoubtedly more but it's been a long while since I played so I can't remember many characters off the top of my head.

so...uhm....you'd rather have something that looks cringe worthy for the sake of "it is different from the mainstream design" ? being different for the sake of being different?

I'd rather have something that doesn't look like a short, slim, pointy eared human. And no, I am not thinking of tall, slim, pointy eared human as the alternative.

It would be nice to have non human species look non human. The DA2 design worked well in some cases and dived cheerfully into the uncanny valley in others. But it did work in some cases - notably the party members where more work would have been put into the design - which suggests to me that with tweaking it was viable.

The DA2 elves for all intents and purposes were just small, pointy eared humans.

As a matter of fact the more detail that was put into the elf the more human they looked.

Now that we have learned multiple races are back I realize I would have never chosen the elves with the DA2 design. I appreciate even more the change lol.

Yes, I agree a lot more could have been made of the differences. Which is why I think stepping back rather than forwards is a shame.

actually by definition it cannot be uncanny valley because DA2 art direction aimed for style and not realism, it was just BAD DESIGN.

Elves look like they do because that is what an elf looks like in people collective imaginary, I am glad Bioware did not just go all out and tried to make them look insanely different or overly inhuman. Let's leave the elves alone and focus in other original non human races uh?

In fact if you look at European mythology the appearance of elves is all over the place, although I admit your Tolkein elf has rather won the day in people's heads. And as it's a thread on elven appearance, I'll stick to commenting on elves rather than other races! Still, I'm hardly expecting anyone to go haring off and redesign them, merely expressing disappointment in what I see as a step back towards the fantasy norm.

So, in summary. Bah. Humbug.

Zevran in DAO was just beautiful compared to the disfigured elf, which us have shown in the DA2.

Redesign?
