In this video, there's a shot of a character sitting on a horse. Unsure if it's an NPC or the PC or what. They said there's horseback, though.

What's your opinion on having a horse? I'd love one. I'd love to see different tiers of horses - some that are for battle, some for speed, some for magical abilities - who knows.

What do you think?

Are you suggesting expandable pocket horses? Yes. They should fit into sphere-shaped containers, while we're at it.

I hope there is a specific type of mount for each race. Humans would have horses, the elves would have hallas and the dwarves brontos.

There's another thread about this (even though it's gotten a little silly...) but, yeah, it looks like horses and, possibly, even other different kinds of mounts (since the articles just says 'Mounts') like Halla maybe or even something new. I think it's an awesome idea. I mean, imagine if they can tie in combat to the mounts? You could have a special cavalry charge or something. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Still, so much potential *and* it adds another layer of immersion since never having horses (or pack animals) was weird in Origins. Less so in DA2 since you never really went all that far from Kirkwall. Still.

Mounts is probably the least exciting feature revelation.

I'm not sure why, but mounted travel has never appealed to me. Just let me use magic to run really fast if the areas are too large.

Mountable mabari hounds? Mountable...*gasp* dragons!? Image IPB

So, it'd be cool if we got to select or unlock a mount, and have our choice of mount. If not I could see:

Human: Horse
Elf: Halla
Dwarf: Bronto
Not yet confirmed kossith/quniari: do they have something to ride?

other cool options would be tervinter elephants, a drake or dragon, mabari mount for dwarf lol, etc

Dwarf: Ram

If the mechanics are good - I'm intrigued.

HOWEVER... have you ever tried to ride the dragon in Skyrim? It's terrible!

I think they established that there were no horses in Thedas. Well, at least not in Ferelden or Kirkwall.

So I require an explanation as to the sudden appearance of horses.

As M'aiq the Liar would say, they were just invisible, and very, very, quiet.

There have always been horses.

David has been using them in his books all along.

They just wouldn't ever show them in the game, because it creates an expectation that you would eventually be able to ride them, which wasn't possible until now.

Well I would have preferred such an explanation over "they were created with the mandate to preserve organic life at all costs".

Am I the only one who thinks Varric's personal mount should be a donkey?

Halla, Dragons, Wyverns and other mounts appeared in the game just fine without letting the player ride them.

Unless they come up with an acceptable explanation of why cavalry units are not employed by the armies of Ferelden and Kirkwall, I will regard this as another "Catalyst" style ass-pull which insults the intelligence of the audience.

As the codex mentions, halla could only be ridden by the Dalish (and it explicitly calls out how the Dalish find halla superior to the horse). The other creatures only ever appear as enemies of the player.

You can regard it as you wish, but they've said all along that they didn't want to show a bunch of mounts that you could never use. If you can't accept that the horses always existed but never had cause to be shown before, then I guess you'll simply have to be disappointed by it.

^ They could at least have shown cavalry units (halla or horse) in the end game cutscenes of DA:O where the Warden's armies gather.

Oh, and the Dalish Warden could not ride halla either. If that's not a problem, I question what makes horses different.

They didn't show horses because they never had cause to create them. Because, as they've said repeatedly in the past, they didn't want to create the expectation that you'd ever be able to ride any in the game. (And even for the halla, there are no animations for any sort of mounted movement.)

The halla were there because it fit the environment and Brecilian quest line, and they were explained in the game such that you'd never really expect to ride one (they're not general mounts, except for the Dalish tribes).

If that's something you can't be satisfied with, then be unsatisfied. If you think that insults your intelligence, then be insulted. But the horses were always there, in the codex and in the very first book for the setting.

I am glad we'll have mounts in DA3. :) I didn't mind running around on foot in DA:O because I could rationalize the lack of mounts. I always figured that my Warden didn't have mounts because she and her companions were travelling off-road as much as possible in order to minimize encounters with assassins, Howe's men or Loghain's men, and she did prioritize equipping the armies so they'd be as effective as possible in the battle to end the Blight.

 I would love this.

If not, oh well. I'll name my horse Altivo, lower the volume and blast "On the Trail We Blaze" at the first lull. Image IPB
