I just figure that Varric prefers to keep himself removed from romantic entanglements. All the better to write about the passionate exploits of your friends that way.

(Besides, I always figured him to be mildly bitter about not being able to woo Aveline. I suspect he has a thing for ginger-haired guard captains.)

I honestly would have preferred not to have him as companion.
He was already the star of the show in DA2 - if they were gonna start afresh here, why did Varric have to have a special treatment?
Plus GI says that all your companions will be exceptional, I'm not sure how Varric is that.
So making a comeback as a LI on top of that?

But if I'm not given any choice, given the fact that this game won't be about my Hawke, I don't really care that Varric would be a LI - I mean, it won't impact on previous interactions I had in DA2.

If it's the case, I just hope they do it because they felt it was a story they wanted to tell, not for fan service purposes. I hate it when they change characters just to please people.

Making him dwarf exclusive seems like it might overcome some of that violation of character perception.  I doubt Bioware would go this route, however, just because they aren't likely to want to close off content to people who play as other races. 

To be fair though, Varric is probably going to be one of the easier characters to 'retcon' in this regard as he's a well known bull****ter within the lore. You can't take everything he says seriously. So if they do make him a multi-race romance option, which would be the smartest way to go if he is available for any kind of romance, they could just go down that route and have him pass his previous statements off as a lark.

I also wonder if maybe Varric was just letting Hawke down easy. Just because many of the party members were attracted to Hawke, it doesn't mean that Varric had to be

Same goes for Cullen, the only reason he will likely be part of the group is because of fangirls.
When they could give us new and more interesting characters instead of him. I already hated him in DA:O.

I love how everyone is comparing him to Alistair. Alistair is awesome, interesting and funny, Cullen is not.
All i heard from him was moaning and complaining. Also i have to get him out of trouble and doing chores for him numerous times.
If Cullen will be forced into group, il just play blood mage to ****** him off until i get a chance to get rid of him or kill him.

I wouldn't romance Varric. He just seems more like a friend than a lover. But if other people want him as a potential love interest, I don't have a problem with it.

See if there were ANY female dwarfs/dwarves in DA:2 I would have been a tad concerned...maybe they'll make him like Sebastion? You know you can only romance him if you meet the requirements? Seems like it would work... But I'm still with my original statement of I wish but not likely

Food for thought for those willing to think about it. Personally I find Varric hillarious and am thrilled to have his wit along for the ride again. Just uh, not in the romance way. For those that find Varric floats their goat, you'll probably have to head cannon it.

Romance or not, Varric's redesign have left him looking more smoldering than ever. The sly fox-grin and ****ty neck line that would scare off the more "prudish" has in recent marketing been replaced with concerned puppy-dog eyes and a tasteful chestplate.

While the reasons for these changes are uncertain, I'm guessing that he is being groomed for romance.

Tasteful?  Blasphemy!!  I prefer my relationship with Varric to stick to the friendly, but the first thing my Inquisitor will do is go out and buy Varric a new open shirt.  Such magnificance should not be hidden.

Well I don't mind Cullen, he's an interesting character, I mean an interesting NPC, but I never thought he was fitting to be promotted as companion, especially again, given the fact that the Inquisitor's companions are supposedly exceptional.
But then, when you see what happened to Merrill from DA:O to DA2, it's hardly the same character anymore.

That's already 3 characters to go out of the usual 8, so far, none has really my sympathy or interest.
