Varric romance in DA:I

I like Varric but I can honestly say I'd be perfectly fine if he isn't an LI. I think he's too caught up in whatever happened to Bianca, and I respect that (as much as one can respect the feelings of someone who doesn't really exist...)

first thought that popped into my head. If the player shows no interest in either, they get together by end of game.

I'm sure 90% of my other PCs will be dwarves, though, 'cause you can't go wrong with dwarves.

If he'd be the first romance I go for, I can't say. I still want to learn more about my Inquisitor and all the party. I may love a character, but I love the story first.
...But I would totally pursue him romantically. I loved his humor and I've always had a thing for short guys.

But seriously, I feel like a lot of others that he's more my friend than a LI since that's what he was in DA2. I wouldn't mind if he was romanceable - I expect a resounding cyber *SQUEEEE* from all the Varric lovers out there if he is - but to me he was always a friend I could rely on.
What I would prefer the most, though, was if I could flirt like mad with him. Totally platonically, of course, but all the damn time. He has some of the best lines and his humour is spot on so friendly flirty banter with him would be so fantastic. Something along the lines of what Isabela and Varric had (I can't remember the exact wording but it's the exchange where she calls him the Paragon of Manliness) NVM I got too curious and looked it up so here it is along with two others I loved:
Isabela: Varric, how does one get made a Paragon?
Varric: The Assembly votes on it. Enough votes, and—BAM!—you're a living God!
Isabela: You should ask to be made a Paragon. Of manliness.
Varric: I like the way you think, Rivaini, but one doesn't just ask to be made a Paragon.
Isabela: Why not? Everyone can see you're a paragon of manliness. It's just a matter of making it official.
Varric: Rivaini, stop looking at my chest. My eyes are up here.
Isabela: But the chest hair...
Varric: Do you know how much I suffer under your gaze? I am a person, not an object!
Isabela: Uh, Varric?
Varric: (Laughs) Just ****ting you.
Varric: I'll let you run your fingers through it, if you want.
Isabela: Your chest hair? My fingers? Oh, Varric, stop! You're making me quiver.
Varric: You know you want to.
Isabela: Oh, I do... I can't resist you. No woman can.
Varric: I know. It's a terrible burden.

NB: I just realise I have Friendzoned Varric. I should hang my head in shame.

I hope Varric will only be a temporary companion in DAI, without any romance whatsoever. He's Hawke's buddy, sidekick and bro, he can't hang around somebody else! It's like Damon and Alaric's bromance - you can't expect Alaric to move to Klaus's spin-off and become his bro instead, it cheapens their friendship, their unique connection.
P.S. Am I the only one who loves Varric dearly but doesn't care about Bianca?
But... Hawke's missing after DA2, so it makes sense to me. Hard to hang out with someone who's gone MIA.
On topic, if Varric is romanceable, that would likely be the only thing to derail my first playthrough plan of rogue elf. If he's an option, then my first playthrough will HAVE to be warrior dwarf.

I think what they said about elven blood is that it's really weak...or maybe pliable so my thought would be that it would look like a dwarf. If you listen to the carta dwarves talking in the DA 2 DLC Legacy they mention sandal saying he kind of looked like the bastard child of king endrin and then they couldn't remember if the rumour was that he was half elf or half human.

I would be really disappointed if he was only available to certain races, and I LOVE dwarves.

I don't understand why people keep saying he should be female dwarf exclusive (IF he winds up being a LI at all...and that's a very big if). He made one or two off-hand comments about it in DA2 but Varric never struck me as that shallow. He was raised on the surface, it's not like he's racist, and he had plenty of playful banter with Isabela, Anders, Hawke, etc.

Having a specific preference to female dwarves only doesn't make him racist, and playful banter =/= actually wanting them

Pretty much the same reason I like the idea of other potential LIs having established preferences instead of being player-sexual. It's part of what defines them as a character.
Varric DOES have banter with Isabela (and Hawke), but point being, he's not into humans. No reason to retcon him just to satisfy a fanbase (the same reason I'm against retconning a character's sexual orientation and turning characters that make for poor romances into LIs just because they are popular, even if its unrealistic).
I'd prefer each of the potential LIs to have preferences. Some prefer elves, some aren't into humans, some only date humans, some are exclusive to men or women, others go both ways, and some could care less who they wind up with (racially or gender-wise).
And having a preference for race or gender when it comes to dating does not = racist or being shallow. It's just a natural part of being human (and dwarven...or elven...). Otherwise there wouldn't be humans...elves...dwarves...etc...
And Varric being dwarf-female exculsive doesn't mean there can't be another romanceable dwarf character that's more open to other races (or not gender specific, for that matter).

I'll just be unfair to the women of the other races that they won't experience the pleasure of romancing the Paragon of Manliness, don't you think? Besides, Bianca gets jealous.iPoohCupCakes wrote...

I agree that characters should have preferences. Without it, it's very unrealistic, weird even. But I understand why it makes some of the fanbase happy.
Varrick, well, I won't cry if he'll be only for dwarf female (I think I make dwarf character just for that

Coupled with his repeated comments that he's not into humans, having him being romanceable by anything other a Female Dwarf Inquisitor would be seem strange.
Is it really that wrong that Varric prefers his LI's to be "Short and Stacked?"
