any our companion(exept Cullen because he is a fanatical Templar junkie) of any race should be romance option not just Varric

i am for Varric(but he have bianka so you must kill her) romance for our female protag but only if Dwarven/Elf/Kossit Tal Vasgoth FEMALES would be possible romance option for our male protag

Just on the off-chance that this isn't a hilariously bad joke, I would like to point out that Varric, the single most loyal member of any Bioware Ganksquad to date, instantly murdered a guy that "assisted" in the murder of Leandra Hawke.

I use the word "assisted" incredibly lightly because he hadn't even been directly involved in Leandra's disappearance/murder, but it didn't matter to Varric who SHOT HIM ON SIGHT.

I point this out because if Varric did this to a man that "caused" the death of his friend's mother, then I dread to imagine what Varric would do to anyone that harmed the love of his life in any way, shape or form.

But if this is just a hilariously bad joke then "lol".

As to a Varric romance? I think his heart is already taken, and I wouldn't like to be the person trying to steal it for themselves.

Why are people assuming bianca is still the dwarf varric remembers? What if after all this time she not the same person anymore? It's been well over 10 years at this point.

He should only be romanceable by female dwarf players, otherwise keep him unattainable.

I certainly hope not.

Seriously guys, must everyone be romanceable?

every companion, yes (IMHO) - because it adds to the characters and it is better that way (look at Mass Effect - many people wanted Tali and/or Garrus and they couldn't have them, it was a bad idea IMHO, so they changed that in ME2 and 3)

greetings LAX
ps: Yeah, Varric should be "available" i would want my Female-Inquisitors to have someone to romance (i don't want to go after mage-hating Cullen!)

Thanks for the explanations; I kind of get why some people would like him to only be an option for female dwarves. But it still rubs me the wrong way, I guess... in just about every human-dwarf-elf high fantasy setting, humans and elves hook up all the time with no problem, they fall in love, get married, blah blah... but dwarves are treated as this "other" who, for some mysterious reason (hint: it squicks the author and/or fanbase out) are ONLY interested in other dwarves. They default to being the comic relief character or (in Varric's case) the "buddy" character. When's the last time you saw an elf fall in love with a dwarf?

And now we have Varric, who is from the surface and has lived among humans and elves his entire life. Who thinks Orzammar is a crappy place to live and probably doesn't have that whole "dwarves are the superior race" thing drilled into his head (Paragon of Manliness notwithstanding :P). He's handsome, funny, loyal, and he's got an intriguing backstory. If they're ever going to make a dwarf companion who wouldn't shun an interracial relationship on principal, it's Varric.

Maybe such a restriction would bother me less if we had another dwarf companion who wasn't dwarf-exclusive, but since I doubt that's going to happen...

"When's the last time you saw an elf fall in love with a dwarf?"

according to DAO some noble dwarf women from Orzammar leave city with her elf lover

and according to Carta from DA 2 Sendal is half elf(his father was from someone from Educan clan) and we clearly can see this

so "dwarf male/female who have romance and kids with not dwarf" exist in DA world

I think Varric telling Hawke that he's not into humans could be easily explained with him just trying to let Hawke down easy.
I don't really want to romance him, but hey it would be something different and lots of people seem to be interested so why not? And people change and move on, not everyone has just one love of their life. BUT can people please stop arguing for him to be female-only, I think it's been established that all LIs will be open for both genders, so that's useless.

Yes, but that's because --in that case-- the PC is a dwarf, and part of player agency is not being excluded from certain romances because you choose to play this-or-that race. I'm just saying I would like to have the option to make my human or elven Inquisitor fall for Varric, if indeed he is a LI. Because it just seems weird to me that the ONLY interracial relationships involving dwarves are ones where YOU are the dwarf, rather than your LI. Does that make sense?

Someone mentioned ambient dialogue about dwarves and elves hooking up, and that's very cool as far as fleshing out the setting goes, but it doesn't mean much when it comes to our party and the personal relationships therein.

There is a side quest in DA2 if Nathaniel is dead which has a dwarf name Yevhen with an elven wife name Dera.

And make him available for gay romance. I always felt like he was a bit closeted. Never showing up with anyone, having a crossbow as his true love... YEAH RIGHT!

In terms of gender/race restricted LIs, my opinion will vary depending on the number of LIs in the game, if it's a small pool of choices (such as the typical four in a DA), I prefer "player sexual", whereas, if it's a larger cast of characters, (such as the numerous you can get in a ME game), I don't mind and possibly prefer gender/race restricted LIs. I recall reading that a DA developer would like to do a larger cast of LIs with restrictions á la ME, but due to time and resource constraints, they chose not to do so, though this was before they were given another year to work on the game, so I do not know if they have since changed this, but until stated otherwise, I shall maintain the opinion that they are sticking with four player sexuals.

In terms of DAO, yes I would have preferred all four LIs to be player sexual (though maintaining that only a female noble human can marry a King Alistair), and in both cases, you could argue there are hints that could suggest that both could prefer the same sex.

With Alistair, you have his poor inter personal relationships with women (Isolde, Goldanna, Morrigan, Anora etc), and being totally uncomfortable in the female dominated Chantry, meanwhile feeling comfortable in the male dominated Grey Wardens, and forming a very close, and very dependant bond with Duncan despite (if I recall) only being a Warden for six months, he lacks confidence, and out of all analogies he chooses, even though he knows you are talking about sex, uses the line "lick a lamp post in winter".

Meanwhile Morrigan always shows disdain for men, and uses the word men as a pejorative when discussing human society, the one woman in her anecdotes she talks about (the one from whom she steals the mirror which Flemeth then breaks) she praises her beauty (she never comments on the attractiveness of men), and shows mild disgust at the thought that her mother expecting her to sleep with men and kill them (given that she would gain her morals and ethics from her mother, and shows no remorse in the act of killing, one can argue it's not the killing part of her mother's intentions she disagrees with).

With Varric, he shows very little, if any sexual desire at all, though like Anders he could in theory become romancable, though if they still are following the four LIs route, and the rumours of Cullen being a companion is true, and the many wishes of many fans for him to be romancable are accepted, it would mean that both male LIs are returning characters (but there again, both female LIs in DA2 were returning characters).

I'm all for Varric as a romance option as long as they don't make him bisexual.

BioWare, not everyone has to swing both ways. It's silly.

And I don't see why Varric has to be a romance option *only* to dwarf Inquisitors, either. All seems vaguely heightist to me. Varric is a real man, whatever his stature. Just listen to that voice and look at that chest hair.

Isn't that a bit hypocritical? Who says that everyone swings for all races, if they're not into all genders? And anyway, it's been almost confirmed that all the LIs are going to be romancable by male and female protagonists, thankfully.

He probably will be. It'd be rather bizarre if he's not, given there was such a demand for it in DA2.

That makes sense. People have been asking for a dwarf romance on forums, and what better dwarf to romance than ladies' man Varric, whom ninety percent of DA gamers love.

I have a feeling that's one of the main reasons he's been included in the party.

It's kind of like the Garrus/Tali thing all over again.

BioWare didn't expect anyone to want to get with a dwarf in DA2, but they were proven wrong, so they're likely going to make it possible now.
